The selection can be a bit less than the other two Ranch Markets but still convenient enough for a quick pick up of needed items. This location has hard to navigate narrow aisles and often lacking in inventory, but this not my reasoning for this negative review. The self check out process is atrocious and ridiculous. The scales are too sensitive to the point that if a single onion rolls off the scale the entire transaction is stopped for an attendant to assist. Once the attendant comes, they search through and scrutinize all your items. The attendants also constantly looks over your shoulder up close and do not understand the concept of personal space. This is all to make sure nothing goes unscanned. Adding the the frustration they do not offer bags. You need to complete your transaction, pay, and request a bag from the attendant. The explanation is they do not want to risk people taking a bag with out paying the $0.10 bag fee. Loss prevention is important, but do so with some more tact and dignity. If somebody wants to steal something they can just walk out in plain sight and the store is instructed to let them go, but they rather go out of their way to scrutinize honest customers at the shelf checkout and treat people with suspicion. If you don't trust your customers, open a few more registers and do not use self checkout. This store needs to learn to treat customers with respect and dignity. Stop embarrassing yourself and Asian businesses by presenting yourself as a cheap and lacking social etiquette. read more

this place sets the standard for asian supermarkets in irvine for sure. its pretty good overall, and its been consistent for as long as ive shopped here (over a decade at least). but with all the asian supermarkets that have popped up recently (2 new hmarts and a tokyo central), it feels like 99 ranch is struggling to keep up. this store in particular feels cramped, and the quality of its produce is bordering on inconsistent. still, it has great prices for certain items in comparison to places like zion market or hmart, and the bogo deal at the sushi/hot food station was pretty good. the dragon roll in particular was nice. self-checkout is kind of a nightmare though. theres always a worker stationed there who is probably doing more work than the actual cashiers because of how many ways there are to mess things up with the machines (especially when putting in produce codes, sometimes they just get impatient and punch in the codes themselves before youve even started to). this place desperately needs to stay open though. i dont know what id do if all of the big grocery stores in irvine turn into carbon copies of hmart, as much as i love hmart. read more

One of the worst Self-check out line experience! None of the produce had sku numbers and everything had to be entered manually before weighing. Ugh! How frustrating and inefficient!!! Customers buying products had to wait for the only checker. Poor lady was working overtime. I would give 0 star. I had a terrible experience at this 99 Ranch Market. My family and I live together, share the same household, and both of us are students. We usually use the same store account for the student discount since we study and shop together. This time, my family member forgot to bring their student ID, so I offered to show mine. The cashier said it had to match the same name, which I understood, so I asked if I could create a new account. She refused, saying it would take too long and hold up the line. Then she said if we could show a student webpage, that would also work. When we showed the webpage, she called the front desk supervisor -- another woman -- to verify it. The supervisor came over with a very rude and impatient attitude. While we were quickly pulling up the webpage (it only took about 30 seconds), she snapped at us, saying "You're too slow -- I have several customers waiting for me at the front desk." She basically blamed us for slowing things down, even though it was the store's own unclear policy and poor coordination that caused the delay. After that, she refused to accept the webpage proof and said, "We only accept physical student IDs," which completely contradicted what the cashier just told us. She also questioned our school and said she didn't even recognize any schools other than UC Irvine. This kind of behavior is extremely unprofessional and disrespectful. We weren't upset about the discount -- we were upset about how poorly we were treated. The supervisor's attitude was unacceptable, and the store's inconsistent policy and poor staff management created unnecessary frustration for customers. read more

In recent years the price have been up and up,the food swings better and worse.This year at the Chinese New Year in January,the deli BBQ became notoriously bad, since then it 's getting fron bad to worse. We stopped buying deli food for a while, today we bought some crispy pork , to the worst of out greatest disappointment That the crispy pork is just a piece of pork bell boiled in saltwater. I did not realize this was a smaller location compared to the Culver one, but for me, I can usually find everything I need here. This location has made it into my bi-weekly rotation for our essentials of vegetables, meats, seafood and snacks. With the weather getting a little colder, I've been shopping here a lot more often to stock up on napa cabbage, bok choy, a tai, mushrooms and daikon radish for hot pot and stir fry dishes. For meats, I usually grab sliced lamb and whatever beef is on sale during that time like sliced ribeye or short rib. If I need to stock up on bones for soup stock, the meat counter is very straightforward if you know what you need. I often point at the item I want in 1-2 pound denominations and the staff just quietly grabs it for you. For seafood, I like to buy salmon here since it's been de-boned and scaled, which takes out some of the prep work at home. It's always a plus not having to clean up fish scales flying around the kitchen sink, ha. My boyfriend also loves to stock up on snacks too! Those strawberry puffs, wafer cookies and red bean ice cream are a must, but I also enjoy picking out random finds. Recent finds have been crayfish or salted egg yolk flavored chips, hokkaido/matcha lattes, dim sum dishes in the frozen section, caramel pudding and aiyu jelly. After dropping off the rest of the groceries at home I returned to the store about 15 minutes after purchasing with the receipt and attempted to return the unopened overpriced item. The management was very rude and told me it's "illegal" to return (not true I've returned similar items to other stores in California). 10 years later... staff are still so rude here !!!! When I was at the check out, when the cashier was busy with me. All the sudden the cashier was shouting at the couple next line, I thought she caught the old couple red handed, but it turned out they knows each other. Then she scan my stuff and kept throwing them at me, even glass jars. In the meantime, she just kept chatting loudly in Cantonese to the couple on the other side of the line, all the other cashier came to that cashier machine and started shouting together. All of the sudden, she asked me " how many items did you get ?" I was confused by her question that came from middle of nowhere and that also doesn't make any sense. Before I react, she ignored me and kept chatting like there is no customers in the store. They looks a bit cleaner inside after the renovation, but many items doesn't have any price on it and many items got wrong price tag. Lots expired items. Entire store smells like rotten seafood. The Honolulu location of this store closed for business a while back and I kind of miss it... Taking a look at the fresh produce, frozen food, refrigerated items, household goods, personal care supplies, live orchid plants, etc. gave me a sense of comfort... like I knew this environment... like hey - I've been here before - almost... We saw Hello Kitty cookies and I got some for my nieces. Niki pointed out the Matcha flavor of White Rabbit candy and shared with me. I liked it! Not too bitter and not too sweet! I am willing to make the 20 minute drive here whenever I need curry. Usually will come here and stockpile all at once. It's definitely more expensive than what you find at Ralph's or Walmart (its 4.19 per package here). But this is one of the few places I know of where I can get EVERY. SINGLE. Flavor of the curry I love, at different brands. I'm very sensitive to the smell of seafood, it makes me want to vomit. So although vaccinated, from now on I'll probably wear a mask.
