I love running here for some Fabuloso, Comet and other cleaning/smell goods. They even have some surprises you wouldn't expect. This place is always well stocked and cleaned and the employees are always nice to me however, my issue is the ridiculously long lines. A cashier ALWAYS closes their register when it gets extremely busy, leaving just one cashier to tend to a long line of customers that go all the way to the back of the aisle, sometimes going towards the food area. I don't think cashiers should close up their registers unless there's a back up already walking up to their register and punching in to their register. read more

After standing in a single long line I finally made it up to the next person. I did not have my things on the conveyor belt yet. The cashier had called for backup a couple of times. Finally a young hispanic male came up looked at the line and with my four items clearly not on the conveyor he asked the two parties behind me to go over to the new line that he was opening up. Now I can't say anything for sure but I was the only white person in line or in fact in the store. He may have missed me I do stand six foot three inches tall so I understand I could be hard to notice. I am in that store at least once a week being that it is close to where I work. I haven't been to a 99 Cents store in quite awhile. I'm trying to stay away from cheaply made, disposable junk that easily ends up in a landfill. That being said, my coworker has a pretty cool assortment of beautiful succulents on his desk. When asked where he purchased them he told me from this 99 Cents store. I went to get pretty plants for my desk during lunch. A quick car trip and $10 later I too had a beautiful desk of succulents and they're happy little green color makes my days a little bit brighter! read more

Underpaid store employees makes for a less than adequate customer appreciation experience. Card readers don't always work. I was recently mortified by employee forcing me to give back my basket when my "card malfunctioned" by not being read properly..ruining my ability to buy a birthday gift and party favors for my grandchild. She inadvertently took my recently acquired green drink that I politely showed to her as mine when I entered the store. It has not been the first time when I've had to deal with tense, impolite, and even angry employees at the 99. Sad stuff! read more

This 99 Cents Only Store location is in a part of Long Beach known as Bixby Knolls, supposedly one of the nicer areas of town. What's interesting is that Bixby Knolls is located adjacent to some not-so-nice areas of Long Beach. This store is in a nice neighborhood, however. This location is one of the bigger stores with a wide array of merchandise. They even have a small grocery section at the back of the store selling such items as fruit and vegetables (pre-packaged) and dairy items like milk. They also sell various household items like cleansers and detergent, personal care items, books, various small electronics, cooking tools, candy, cookies and other snacks---and the list goes on. All the items sell for 99.99 cents (which rounds up to $1.00), except for the gallon jugs of milk, which sell for $2.89. This store is clean and well organized. The last time I was here, there were only two checkout lanes open and both of them had long lines (sigh!). The parking lot has limited parking available directly on the Carson Street side of the store, but there are more spaces available beside the store on the Orange Avenue side. As Louie B. mentioned, there is a lady sitting outside the store entrance/exit asking passers-by for donations to some kind of cause. The store management seems to be OK having her parked there all day long. :-/ Since this store is in the city of Long Beach, it's a VERY good idea to bring your own reusable shopping bags before entering the store. read more

There is nothing wrong with shopping here! You find some of the best deals in items and find that they sometimes carry brands you never thought such store would carry. Yes, it can be so messy sometimes but the things you find here are so reasonably priced and useful! Parking can sometimes be a challenge and so is waiting in a long line to get checked out. Visited the store today for some staple household items and the cashier on line 1 forgot to pack four of my items into my bags. Two hours later after arriving home I noticed the error and returned to the store for the items after calling twice and no answer. I arrived and explained that the cashier did not pack 4 of my items and they should be at register lane 1. He said wait let me check and walks to the back of the store.I waited 10 minutes and he finally returned to say it was ok to retrieve the items. I asked if the items were still at register 1, he explained that he didn't think so but go back in the store to get what I need. Wowwww really, the cashier forgot and my items are not still there just in case I returned so now I must go back and retrieve them. Great location and GREAT selection. I jump between this and the Woodruff location depending on where I'm driving from. Shopping here really helps my going out discretionary fund, while also eating healthy! Every week I buy lettuce tomatoes, strawberries, blueberries, bread, and any other specials they have. Since the grocery industry is so well regulated, I have no worries! I've definitely gotten bad products at Albertsons, Ralphs, Safeway, etc. but if I get something bad here... heck -- better $1 than $5 :D read more

You really can't complain too much given the location and staffing. But I will try my best. The parking lot is terribly small. The store itself is not normally clean and is in constant disarray. There are always unsavory characters in the parking lot which make it uncomfortable to even walk inside. They are way understaffed in the afternoons and the lines are always more than 3 or 4 deep. We run in here for soda when picking up pizza next door. But that's all we get. I don't like to be in here any longer than I have to. read more

They advertised a sale for eggs, a dozen for 99 cents on Thursday only. So I went over and couldn't find any. I asked one of the cashiers and she said they didn't receive a shipment for the sale, and wouldn't get any until the next day, Friday. I asked for a raincheck, and she said they didn't give out rainchecks. OOOOOOKAY. I sent an email via their website and was basically told 'SOL.' So keep that in mind the next time you peruse one of their ads. Also, their produce section in an abomination. Most of it was half rotten, and of course it was messy and disorganized, and was most of the store. Boxes blocked aisles and only one register was open. This is one of those don't judge a book by its cover stores. It's a little old, the parking lot is small and cramped, somebody is always outside asking for money, and it's not as big as others. Nonetheless this is my go to when I need certain things for cheap, even though there is one closer to home. I always end up finding some kind of hidden treasure good deal when I shop here too. I avoid coming on the weekends because lines can get long. Best days for me are early morning weekday, they are fully and freshly stocked. This 99 cents store has only gotten dirtier with time. Skid marks all over the floor and the front is generally a mess. But at the end of the day everything is still the same price. A plus I've noticed is that they carry a bunch more produce than before. I walked in to find fresh avocados, bell peppers, and beautiful lettuce. I also noticed fad items like plastic bottles with built in straws. When you take into account those things are around $9.99 at places like Target... Finding them in the 99 cents store is a steal! The staff is generally overworked and not too cheery but not rude by any means. Pretty standard for places like this. This particular location has an issue with available check out lanes. They usually have two at the most open. So if you're in a rush it might be a wait at the cashier. There's a private parking lot and a bunch of food establishments near by if you haven't eaten or plan on grabbing food to go. Tough times? A bit Saved money? A lot!! I had to pick up something for a friend while in the area. I haven't been to this location in a long while, but I was glad to escape with money still in my purse, resting nicely against my switchblade. They didn't have the salad dressing that I came to get, but they had some lemons for 99 cents a bag. Do you know how much the cost of lemons has risen? Great deal! I also bought some tomatoes, some peppers, and doggy treats. Not all of the produce was above par, so I passed on the peaches and cabbage, for example. The chorizo from the freezer section was delicious on my black bean burrito. All in all the 99 Cent Only chain can save you money during these times of the soaring cost of living. Don't expect too much from the employees at ANY of the locations, though. Try your best to summarily avoid them. I've yet to encounter nary a one that I would ever hire. Ok, so maybe with prices at 99 cents, they get cheap employees too. Unfortunate that some of those employees are voters. Eeeeep! A stocker tried to ignore me when I asked about the whereabouts of the salad dressing, when I pressed him, suddenly his English was challenged. How on Earth does this store have a nearly 4 star rating?! This store is absolutely disgusting and probably crawling with communicable diseases. Everything about this store is just gross. The parking lot, the inside of the store, the shelves, the products sold here, the checkouts; just everything! The parking lot is covered in trash that the customers here throw out of their vehicles. Not to mention the inches thick layer of grease and grime that your shoe soles stick to while you are walking into the store. There are crazy drivers and shopping carts all over the place, even taking up parking stalls; it is like an obstacle course just surviving the parking lot. There are always people at the front of the door begging for money. The floor of the inside of the store is filthy! Looks like the floor hasn't been cleaned in 10+ years! The shelving units that the product is displayed on is also dirty and filthy. There are products on the shelves that are being sold past their expiration dates, this includes food products. How is it legal for expired food to be sold?! And then at the checkout, good grief! The conveyor belt is just like the parking lot-covered in inches of grease and grime! This is my go-to 99 cent store. I love it. It has everything and yup, only for 99cents (duh)! They have a moderately sized produce and freezer section. They usually have salad-in-a-bag, ginger, garlic, real and imitation cheese (?), milk, yogurt, bananas, cauliflower, grapes, strawberries, avocados, mangoes, tomatoes, jalapenos, and all kinds of other stuff. I can't possibly write all the things this 99cent store has, but I will mention all the things I have bought or have seen that has stood out to me. -Garbanzo beans - i like getting the huge can they have here to make hummus -El Pato Salsa - this is a really spicy Mexican tomato sauce that can be used in enchiladas, beans, eggs, etc. They have the huge can here for 99cents when other places sell it close to $2. -Sliced or whole mushrooms - they're always in really good shape and i just make sure to use them fast. -Spices - a lot of spices can be somewhat expensive. So I always stroll by the spice section to see what new ones they have. I usually get ground cumin, ginger, garlic and basil here. Oh! They also have canned minced garlic which i love, bc I'm too lazy to mince it myself. -Bread - they have a whole bread section, even pita bread. -Top Ramen - i'm a student, therefore this is a prime staple. -Salami slices - i'm not lying. They totally have salami slices. I've used them on the egg muffins I make for my honey. -Sopitas Maggi - Latinos know exactly what i'm talking about. This is a latin american soup mix that our mommas use to make us feel better when we're sick. It's soooo good, they blow Campbell's chicken noodle soup outta the water any day. -brownie/cake mix - yes!! -Gifts - oh my gosh. gifts! I've found the most awesome and cheap gifts here. I've bought cute (and legit) Disney Albums here that i'll be giving the little ones for xmas. I also found out that they have a whole section of scrapbook items, like stickers, borders, ribbon and all kinds of stuff. How cool is that? Frames, sudoku and crossword books, tupperware, UCLA bowls, and cute salt/sugar rimmers! Gift bags (you know those are expensive at CVS), wrapping paper, ribbon, etc. Perfect for xmas time. All cool stuff!!! Not to mention all their awesome little kitchen gadgets. Ok, so you get it. The 99cent store has a lot of really cool and cheap items. But it also has some questionable ones that i probably would only buy if i was crazy, like condoms, uhm, no thanks! Or pregnancy tests... still skeptical. Imitation cheese, what the hell, man, does it even melt? I've had too many bad experiences w county cheese that i just don't trust it. So that's why i stay away from those items and with food items that I get, I always check the expiration dates (and some are *really* close to expiration) and looks for signs of mold or general nastyness. I have a 99 cent store basically right down the street from my house. That 99 cent store is large, clean, well-stocked & employees are on the ball. This is how I judge all other 99 cent stores. If this one can do it, why can't others? I was in the area of this store yesterday (05-11-2013) and wanted to pick up a gift bag and tissue paper for a card I purchased at CVS several minutes earlier. I pulled into the parking lot and immediately noticed the people who were shopping here and before I walked in the doors I knew what I was in for. I knew what I was in for before I even got out of my car by cars driving through the parking lot with no regard for people walking through the parking lot and/or vehicles pulling out of parking spaces. Everyone seemed like they were in such a rush. When I finally found a safe area to park my vehicle I parked and began walking toward the front doors. The parking lot itself has cracks and potholes everywhere that looks like they have been there awhile hence the weeds growing out of the cracks and holes. I have no one to blame but myself for ignoring the warning signs and shopping here anyway. I walked in the front doors and immediately noticed the smell; the store smelled like someone was smoking cigarettes in the A/C ducting. The entire store smelled like an ashtray. If that wasn't enough it was hot and I mean hot inside of this place. It was hot outside and I guess this 99 cent store is trying to save money on the electric bill by not turning on the A/C, I know I was hot and witnessed several other customers fanning themselves as they walked around and/or stood in line. I found a bag and began my journey to the cash registers. After waiting in line for a few moments I decided I could not take the smell or the heat anymore and placed my objects down and left without purchasing them. Later that night I went to the 99 cent store by my residence and there was a dramatic difference in smell, heat & cleanliness. There is ZERO chance I ever come back to this location. I do not care if they were giving stuff away. To me this 99 cent store echoes what a majority of Long Beach is to me, an area I do not want to be for any reason. When you get disgusting people shopping at your store there is not much you can do about that because given time your store will become disgusting and this is exactly what happened. read more

I do love the 99 Cents Only Store, but this one definitely isn't the best I've been to: it was smaller, and there weren't as many art supplies as I wanted (yes, I know, they'll be crummy quality anyway). The bread section was over half empty, and the produce section looked ok, although some 99CO stores have bigger produce sections. The employee who rang me up was quite friendly, which I liked. As always, if you're willing to do some hunting, you can find plenty of brand-name stuff that would be more expensive elsewhere, including gifty items like Disney princesses stuff, various plants, pots, and seeds, toys, and a surprising variety of pet food and treats (animals need presents too!). read more

Just be careful what you buy because the quality is only as good as how much you pay for it. For example, I bought a screwdriver set to fix glasses and that mess didn't even move the bolt. They also sell food and produce but always remember to check the expiration date. Blockbusters also is trying to stay alive by placing a Blockbuster Express machine, which is essentially a Redbox, in stores.
