Daiso was founded in 1977, with the name meaning To Create Big. It originated from the 100Yen…read morestores that are all over Japan, This location in Long Beach is well run, with fully stocked shelves, ranging from very specific products used for one particular purpose to everyday things that one would constantly have to replenish. Slowly browsing the shelves is like walking through a series of infocommercials...very possible that what you buy was a complete waste of money, but having the risk be minimal since it's only a dollar. When we went to Japan many years ago (before Daiso made it to the US in 2005), 100 yen truly meant a dollar. But the Japanese economy has really struggled compared to the US, to the point where 100 yen is only worth 64 cents now in 2024. Another thing I noticed is how they handle labeling of prices. Both 100yen stores and US dollar stores keep the effort of pricing products low, by selling everything at one even price (i.e. a dollar or 100yen). Of course, with inflation, this is not sustainable...prices need to go up. So rather than having to relabel everything as prices go up, instead Daiso uses the prelabeled price in YEN to represent a CODE..translated to a dollar amount per charts that are found throughout the store. And the vast majority of product has no price...which means that it is the default price of the entire store (which in 2024 is $1.75). Unlike 99cent or dollar stores in the US which sell mostly excess products that you can find in department or grocery stores, much of the products in Daiso are made exclusively for them. Thus, you can find real useful things here, at decent quality. On this visit (which we made only because we saw this store near the place where we had lunch), we ended up getting 2 china soup bowls, loose tea leaf filters, a fat/scum skimmer for soups, a spring loaded glass bottle for Q-tips (or in my case, Glide flossers), and a 10 pack of clasp chip bag clips. And none of them had marked prices, so defaulted to $1.75 each. Even here, they ask if you want a bag, needing to charge you the dime if you answer 'Yes' (that's California). So we always say 'No', and because this time we had not brought reusable bags, used the bowls to contain the knick-knacks back to our car. Would have been a very different story if we had walked, but alas, Brand Daiso is one of those stores that is not within walking distance from our place.

Highly recommend coming to Daiso if you shop at other discount and affordable stores. So many great…read moreitems and knick knack items. From containers, house supplies, stationary and more, it's a really useful store for everyday use. There's even items you wouldn't normally find in other stores. This store is a bit smaller than others but all employees are really friendly and helpful. I went to find a basket for my house for clothes and other stationary goods and they had some really cool options to choose from. I always leave with Japanese chips too to take on the road.

I don't think having the same price for everything when it's $9 for instance is worth it since the value isn't always there. But interestingly good to have gone for the first time and see some potential.

First impression is seeing the streaked tile floor and opened boxes and packaging in wooden slated tables. Dozens of customers digging through aimlessly and moving through the piles which appeared to have no rhyme or reason in organization. Nothing had pricing in the table bins. My GF asked but the gentleman in the front did yell from time to time that everything was $4 & it would be $3 on Sunday. After an hour, I had some party decor, a adhesive wall paper roll, shower steamers, and small drawstring gift bags. My GF picked up a double walled tumbler, 6pk of backup reading glasses, inflatable mini bed, 4 pk Ticonderoga pencils, and car window shades. It was worth noting that although the majority was of no interest, there were people with dozens of items in their cart. To each their own. I saw lots of party decor, disposable plates, makeup, cell phone accessories, home decor, misc craft, seasonal, etc. Few name brands, such as Sharpies and Ticonderoga, mostly generic Amazon goods made in China. All of the items come bought as mystery pallets from Amazon & the store is restocked on Thurs and Friday. Pricing is the most expensive on the restock days and I can't even fathom what's left by $0.50 Weds! Will be back to treasure hunt again! Highly recommend if the overconsumption doesn't bother you & you have the patience to go through the items. Some customers were aggressively throwing items around & coming close to hitting others with their carts as they inched through the bins.

Household goods, kitchenware, arts and crafts, school supplies, party supplies, hardware supplies, tools, food and snacks, cleaning products, etc. Although they have tons of items, there's a few things they need to correct here. Items that are not tagged can be tricky. The cashier can charge you at any price on the spot and you wouldn't know unless you ask. What looks like a dollar can be more. Inflation and tariffs are definitely hurting the pocket. You also can't go back inside once you've paid. If you bought something already and checked out, you can't go back inside unless you leave your items up front. Maybe they've had issues with theft before or miscommunications with items. The cashier was friendly however, she was nice about it. Just strange practices but I get it, it's a small business and people probably steal here. EDIT: Came back here again shortly after. Cashier Julie was not nice and needs to be more friendly. Different cashier than the first one. She's a F!l!p!no lady. Kind of snooty and arrogant. Didn't smile nor said hello. When I spoke to her in Tagalog, she acted like she didn't hear me and responded back in English. The other guys that stock here are nice however. We needed an empty box to put all our stuff in but he took it from us to bring it up to the front before we can use it. This small store is a bit strict.
