My sisters and I had lunch here with Mom on Friday. We like that they offer lunch specials until 4:00 PM, which is rare for most restaurants. Hanh was our server and she was so sweet and attentive. I usually go to the one located on El Camino when I'm in the Clear Lake area. The Pearland location is pretty consistent with the quality and service so that's a plus. I prefer the El Camino location because of their ambiance and authentic Chinese menu. I didn't like this location's set up so much. I ordered the lunch shrimp with vegetables extra spicy with brown rice and hot and sour soup. I'm a connoisseur of hot & sour soup. My parents had a Chinese restaurant back in the 90's when quality and pride was made by my Dad as the master chef. 888 has been the closest to perfection. We were in Houston for an Imago class and this place was recommended as close and good. It was, too, on both counts. The building is pretty and the decor is what you would expect from a nice Chinese restaurant. Clean, with a nice ambiance, and animated conversation at each table- we went twice during our weekend getaway and neither visit disappointed. First let me say, the wonton soup is as good as any I have had. The broth is fantastic; it tastes rich and homemade with just the right amount of salty - broth from a can is always full of sodium, but this was just lovely. I had it twice and I recommend it a third time! Day one we shared the chicken and eggplant in garlic sauce over brown rice. It was absolutely delicious. Sweet and pungent, the chicken was cooked very well and the whole dish was cohesive and tasty. Some of it went home, thanks to the stir fried pork dumplings we had (which were also delicious!), which was a terrific way to end the night...a swim in the hotel pool followed by a plate of delicious leftovers. I saw the Chinese menu on the last page on our first visit, so I knew I had to come back for the spicy sliced fish in a clay pot. I don't know the names of all of the spices, but they are distinctive and powerful, and really make this a stand out dish. If you're adventurous in your culinary pursuits, you need this dish in your life. I had it once before in New Orleans and this example was at least as memorable...maybe more. If you're here and looking for something new, don't hesitate, do it...it was worth the second trip and more. Petunia had the shrimp and mango dish: sweeter than either of the other two dishes we tried, it was very, very good. So so disappointed. My grandson ordered egg drop soup but it was so thick of egg and very little broth. He also ordered fried dumplings that were cold and hard. Their szechwan beef was good and the spicy edamame was excellent, we loved the spicy chili sauce on it. I did address the problem with the server and he took it to the manager. The manager sent word by server that they would give my grandson fresh dumplings and I also asked for a small bowl of egg drop soup with more soup In it. If you want quantity over quality, 888 is the place for you! I come here sometimes during my lunch break for a quick and cheap meal. They give heaping portions especially with the lunch specials. The food may not be the best, but at least you leave with a full belly. I've tried several of their lunch special options, and my personal favorite would have to be the Chicken with Garlic Sauce. The plate comes with loads of greasy fried rice and chicken. It even comes with soup and egg roll options! Overall, 888 is a decent option for Asian food in the Pearland area.
