Service was so slow! I had to ask to see our waitress! Food is good but the wait time is unacceptable. There were 5 other tables besides us.

The place is quite good for an outskirts city of Houston Chinese restaurant, and I'd say one of the best. The place was clean. I could see in the back from where I chose to sit. It was cleaner than. Most places I'd seen. Looked like the manager was checking everyplate that went out. Very professional to quality check that way. One of the owners came to visit me, and ask how everything was. She was a very nice Chinese lady. I ordered various rice dishes. Also found that they in fact have a second menu for other kinds of Chinese and Indian dishes. Very cool. Prices were average. Service was energetic and friendly. Kelvin was a great server. Service speed was good. I saw customers being rude to the servers, and they handled it professionally. I don't think I've ever heard someone make so many changes to a dish. 1. You can't really take anyone who prefaces their review with a Britney Spears analogy seriously... 2. 888 Bistro has probably the most extensive and authentic Chinese menu in Houston Clear Lake. You just have to specifically ask for the Chinese menu. Try the dishes like the 888 Stir Fried Steak, the Homestyle Claypot and/or the Shredded beef or pork with thai pepper and cilantro, or the whole red snapper fish in ginger scallion or hot sauce and THEN tell me the food is only meh. On their appetizers list, the BBQ spare ribs and chicken and shrimp lettuce wraps are pretty fabulous. The grilled redfish and shrimp combo with a side of shrimp fried rice is really tasty and an amazing price for what you get, just compare it to other places around here. Any of their sizzling platters are great. There's little to no dishes on their Chinese menu I can think of that I would never order. Should I continue? 3. 888 Bistro has an amazing bar selection and great happy hour and weekly night drink specials. $2 for import/domestic beers and well liquor is a pretty darn good deal. Also, the bartenders are very knowledgeable about pairing drinks with dishes and the menu. You might actually have a better experience sitting at the bar than a regular table. 4. The decor is beautiful on the inside. Clean bathrooms. The prices are sufficient. If you're complaining that $14 is expensive for 1.75 lbs of quality ribeye beef or $9 for a large plate of just about any dish on the menu, then you probably should stay home and eat because the food is worth their value especially considering the atmosphere you're getting when you eat there. 5. 888 Bistro is the best Chinese restaurant in the Clear Lake area. The traditional chinese menu is pretty good. You have to understand, when you go to a Chinese restaurant and complain that your General Tso's chicken had too much breading or argue with the staff that you know how Kung Pao chicken should be prepared despite that you 1. Don't know how to spell the dish correctly and 2. Your only expert knowledge of how Kung Pao chicken is prepared is probably solely based off of what you had at other fast food rat infested small Chinese restaurants or frozen PF Chang microwave boxed meals; its naive and stupid. You go to a Chinese restaurant to order authentic Chinese cuisine. If you're just going to order the Americanized Chinese food and complain about it, go to a buffet or pick up a frozen meal at the grocery store instead. 6. My thoughts on delivery; delivery generally sucks at most restaurants. With the exception of ones that specialize in it like Dominos or Pizza Hut. This is a nicer restaurant, you're lucky that it even provides a delivery service. Most restaurants that are at 888's caliber don't even provide a delivery service. If you have a car, go pick up the darn food yourself and check the bag just in case to avoid any problems. If you don't have a car, then well, I guess you're SOL. read more

As a preface to this review I want you to think about Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, New Coke and every other over-advertised, over-hyped, and over-publicized object in the world. Answer this question - did the object/person live up to that hype? If you answer 'Yes' then you are not going to like this review. This was the Britney Spears of asian food. When construction started on this place the over-hyping began about how this place was going to blow the doors off PF Chang's, Pei Wei, and whatever other Asian places I like. Such imagery instantly attracted my attention. I tried the place right after it opened. Wow, it was overhyped. I tried it again a few months later and still nothing really moved me. Don't get me wrong - the food is eminently edible. The huge television received my full attention as did all the neat design and flashiness on the inside (even though the outside looks like an old army war bunker.) I just don't get the hype. PF Chang's has much higher food quality, in terms of what I will eat they have a much wider (read: better) selection too. The nicest thing I can say about 888 is that they leave the hot sauce jar on the table for you to go wild with. I like my hot sauce. Pei Wei makes you get off your ass to walk over to the counter to get the hot sauce. 888 knows I am a lazy person. So, thanks. My two stars is not to indicate the food was bad in any way. It was just not goodgreatohmygodamazing. It was edible. And it was expensive for what you get. Flashiness of the interior aside, there is no reason why I would come here with a Pei Wei just down the road (Bay Area @ 45.) My review would probably be substantively different had this place not been overhyped. But I like knocking Britney Spears down a few notches. Meh. read more

This is pretty much the only alternative to Hunan Star for me as far as Chinese food goes in this area. They have a large menu full of the usual suspects (Gen Tso, etc) but also some nice specialties like honey walnut shrimp, hot pots, and singaporean noodles. Their house special seafood (whole red snapper) are good, but pretty pricey ($23). I also like that they offer brown rice as an alternative if you're trying to eat healthy, along with a section for vegetable or diet (steamed) dishes. This isn't your normal take-out place though, so prices are a little more premium in here. You do get good portions and a very nice presentation, however. They have a bar area and try for a more hip, modern ambiance (I never understand when restaurants in the suburbs do this, but I guess Clear Lake at least has a handful of young professionals in the area judging by how full the parking lot at Sherlock's pub gets sometimes) so this can be a good place to take a date to or watch a sports game at. They even have a couple of private rooms behind the bar area to accommodate parties or large groups. You can't really go wrong with this place, and it gets the obligatory +1 star curve that all suburban restaurants get *wink* for a total of four stars from me! read more

Great service. Smoked duck appetizer was tender and moist with crispy skin, perfectly seasoned. Order this, you won't regret it. The hot and sour soup was neither, but it was hearty and fresh. Add a few drops of the chile paste that's on the table and you're golden. Mango Chicken was sort of like a sweet and sour sauce, but not as sweet and very mango-y and garlicky, lots of veggies and mango chunks. Good. A little sweet for my taste, but did have a good depth of flavor and many notes. Chicken is stir fried, not batter fried. Shredded Sichuan Beef was OK, not anything special. A little spicy, but not much. The sauce was one note and a little salty. I wouldn't order it again. Choice of white, brown, or fried rice (I appreciated the brown rice option). Attractive rooms. We had a party of 14, and it was 10:00pm. They close at 11:00pm, which we thought would give us enough time to dine here. Dinner was last minute because we had just gotten out of a graduation. Yes, we had a large party, but we preplanned on ordering family style, having everything come out at on once, and getting the bill on one check. Not too complicated. Apparently, it was because they gave us a hard time about it. The employees here have a serious staring problems. They seated us inside one of their private rooms with glass windows. The windows are seen both ways, so we can see them constantly walking by and looking at us, or straight up standing there and staring. Completely rude and made me uncomfortable because I was seated directly in front of the windows. The food was good for the most part. One of the best dishes was the chicken lettuce wrap, so I suggest getting that. An order is enough to fill one person up! The seafood udon soup was alright. Mediocre flavor for the broth, and all the veggies in it were overcooked. I can't remember what the other dishes were exactly since I didn't order them, but they were your average dishes. They weren't outstanding or worth getting again. Plenty of parking. Big restaurant with many tables. I'm not sure how busy it gets since we went at a later time. I have been to the other 888 location a few times and we're very disappointed. My friend said that this location had a few good dishes. My friend goes to school close to here and we went here a few times when I visited her. Here are he good dishes: Stir-fried vegetables Bamboo shoots with pork (spicy) Spicy pot with intestines and fish Spicy sliced beef Boiled fish in spicy broth. The names are not exactly accurate but they should do the tricks. I haven't tried the other stuff but this place is always busy so I guess it's good enough. Favorite Chinese restaurant. Their sizzling plate with beef is my favorite dish. It's presented, as described by the name, on a sizzling plate with oil splattering all over. This keeps the buttery beef nice and hot and it's soooo tasty. Hot and sour soup is fantastic. The fried noodles are unhealthily fried to perfection, which complements the soup very well. Kung Pao chicken is fantastic as well, and it's my dad's favorite. I always come here for Chinese food if I'm in town. Came last saturday for some Chinese takeout at this local restaurant and the food is beyond expectation. I was immediately greeted by the girls up front and they were really nice and helpful. They always recommend good foods if you don't know what to order. However, the wait time is unnecessarily long for a takeout order and they don't seem too busy at all. On top of that, their door doesn't seem to fully shut which make the windy weather intolerable for the people waiting inside. We tried the crab puffs, they were spot on perfect. My husband loved his wonton soup. I had the generals chicken, lo mien and my husband had pepper steak with fried rice. We loved every bit of it. The service was also some of the best we've had in a long time. The waitress was always smiling, very friendly and very attentive. I ordered the #1 lunch special - sauteed mixed vegetables, but asked them to make it with spicy garlic sauce. They accommodated with no problem, and it was quite good. It had asparagus, green beans, snow peas, and broccoli, and was served with fried rice. My friend ordered the General Tso Bean Curd from the vegetarian menu, and it was also surprisingly good. The tofu was crisp on the outside and firm on the inside, and the sauce was flavorful, sweet and a little bit smoky. It was a very similar taste to General Tso Chicken, but in a vegetarian version. We stopped by this spot for a working lunch with a customer today and while the food was tasty, everything tasted very generic and like it had nothing to distinguish finish it form countless other Chinese food spots. I had the shredded pork with XO sauce (basically generic stir fry sauce) and it was nothing particularly exciting. The pork was cooked well, tasted fine, but was oversalted and was served with undercooked rice. At a minimum it wasn't bad, but I've had better at chains like P F Chang's, which is fairly sad all things considered. While I certainly won't turn it down if someone wants to take me here, I'll personally dodge it whenever I'm back in the Clear Lake area. read more

You can't go wrong at this place even the statue of Buddha looks like he is happy to see me. Here in Texas we hear all the stories of New York Chinese food being the best, as if the Chinese people here came from somewhere else(Vietnam) "wink wink". Well blow me down( Popeye the Sailor reference) because I am here to tell you I have been to New York and even though I did not have Chinese food there the BBQ and seafood sucks.
