We tried 88 Bao Bao in McKinney last night through DoorDash (shown as a customer favorite) and had a bit of a mixed experience. We ordered spring rolls, orange chicken, chicken lo mein, chicken fried rice, beef rolls, egg custard buns, and red bean buns. I personally really enjoyed my orange chicken -- it had a nice sweetness and crisp texture -- and the spring rolls were solid as well. However, the rest of the group felt the other dishes were pretty bland. The chicken in a few items had a slightly gelatinous texture, which threw some of us off. The egg custard and red bean buns were very sweet -- almost dessert-level sweet -- which might be perfect if that's what you're expecting, but it was a bit much for our taste. One big positive: the portion sizes were massive. You definitely get a lot of food for the price, which was exciting. We just wished the flavors had been stronger overall. Yelp suggested 88 Baobao and we were happy to try them in McKinney Tx, as we had tried and liked their Dublin CA branch in earlier! First of all a wide smile and eagerness to serve seemed ingrained into the staff here. We ordered quickly and our food was brought quickly ! It was served piping hot and for the first time in a long while I thoroughly enjoyed slurping my XLB while came in quickly and almost too hot to eat! Yumm! We also got the HarGaw and enjoyed them thoroughly as well ! Tried this new spot on a Sunday evening for a late dinner! We got there about 45 minutes before they closed and we were so glad we came! The service was quick and the cashier provided lots of helpful suggestions! We were only seated at our table for a matter of minutes before our first item was delivered to the table (given there was only one other table dinning at that time). We got an order of the pork xiao long bao, chili crisp wontons (pork and shrimp), and orange chicken! Everything was absolutely delicious and tasted super fresh! 1. The Xiao long bao was cooked to perfection with the perfect amount of soup inside! The broth and the meat were both super flavorful 2. The orange chicken was crispy and covered with sauce! The only thing I wish was different was that it came with a side of rice but we ended up just ordering a side. 3. The Chili Crisp Wontons were my husband's favorite! I had a couple and the flavors were amazing but be warned these are definitely spicy! We definitely got ice cream a few doors down at Stella's afterward! This place is super clean and cute. We have eaten here twice now, once dine in and once as take out. The owners (Joyce and a tall guy, didn't get his name, but both so nice and very welcoming, polite). The food is AMAZING and made fresh to order. The owners check EVERY plate coming out of the kitchen (I watched them do this), so you know they are on top of the quality. The wonton soup we had was delicious, loved the broth. The dumplings are so fresh and tender. Only wish would be to add a wor wonton option with bbq pork. My son had the hand pulled noodles which he LOVED. The Good news. The string beans were great! The people were very nice and it was very clean Bad news, The dumpling were not flavored well and not tender at all. The dough was hard and chewy. On the Shrimp dumpling, we ask for streamed but they were brown on the bottom. I was told they were not frozen, but I saw them put them in the steamer via the window and they frozen and hard. I saw the fresh dumplings being made but they did not use them. I only eat gyoza so I had the fried rice which was delicious! And served in a great helping. Wife and one daughter loved the dumplings. It's a strip mall restaurant with no sound deadening. Hence the missing fifth star. Also - you have to order at the counter like a fast food place - but I guess that means the tipping process is a little different. However, all they used was as dark chicken meat and the taste did not go well with the fried rice and also the spicy chicken which was kinda fried. Been going to the Frisco location and was so happy they opened up another in McKinney. Out go to dish here is the XLB pork dumplings (pork and crab are also delish). If you are familiar with Din Tai Fung, I prefer 88s more since their wrapper is thinner and soupier. We also love the Taiwanese beef noodle soup, fried rice , Mongolian beef and orange chicken. I think we have tried everything on the menu and all of it is delicious. Growing up around good Asian food in LA, I can say this place is authentic and does not disappoint! The food was disgusting, bland, and the customer service was very stand offish. The three girls at the front were rude and when I was waiting on my order they were just standing around giggling and whispering to one another while looking around at the customers eating which made it feel very weird. Honestly I spent $50 on food that I threw away. I took one bite of the dumplings spat it out and threw the whole to go container of dumplings away, then the chow mein with shrimp. Chow mein had zero flavor, noodles were dry, shrimp was the only thing tolerable. I even got edamame which I usually love but it was bland some weren't cooked thoroughly no type of seasoning not tossed in anything. Threw that away as well. The only thing I got to eat out of the $50 meal I purchased was the 6 pieces of SHRIMP. I could have bought fresh shrimp from my market and made myself. 6 shrimp for $50 essentially because the dumplings, edamame, and chow mein were not tolerable. Very disappointed and I honestly could have gone to Panda Express paid half the cost and had actual flavor in my food. That's sad to even say. If you enjoy bland flavorless food and odd behavior from customer service this is the place you should eat!
