I've visited this restaurant a few times but have not been able to try there pie. I usually make it around noon and enjoy speaking with the locals on recommendation and weather. Once we arrived the hostess seated us, and the server came over and asked us for our drink order right away (super polite), giving us time to review the menu and decide what to order. We were there for breakfast and it was delicious, I had the meat-lover omelet, bacon egg, and cheese which hit the spot my son said. Been driving by this dinner for 4.5 years and tonight finally stopped by! Greeted and seated immediately, very friendly staff. Clean parking lot, clean entry, smells clean upon entering and no accumulated dust or cobwebs in the ceiling. Even the windows look clear and clean. Hailey was very attentive and friendly. We ordered crab soup which was filled with a good amount of vegetables and the potatoes were soft . It was a spicy tomatoe based soup. Our entres were gargonzola steak over Alfredo pasta, side salad , garlic bread and meatloaf with bbq beans and mash. The Alfredo sauce was a bit watery but we asked Hailey for Parmesan and that thickened the Alfredo sauce. The steak was unseasoned, I added butter and spread the little globs of Gorgonzola cheese and that made it better. The garlic toast was amazing! Would've loved more if I could load up on carbs! The meatloaf was not overdone with rice or too much breadcrumbs, it tasted like beef and was juicey. The brown gravy was the best compliment to this meatloaf. I love my mash with butter only and was happy to add some and mix it in. The beans were seasoned with a sweet bbq sauce which was ok I don't really care much for the sweetness but adding butter made them buttery and saltier . Great place for truckers, families and couples alike! Close to the freeway so it's perfect for a quick stop on your road trip across PA! Servers are very friendly and if you're a return customer they'll remember you and treat you like family! they have a great menu with lots of yummy options and don't give you grief if you want to personalize something (I wanted a steak Caesar salad that wasn't on the menu but they made it for me!). Great atmosphere and everyone seems to be enjoying their meals when we were there! Our waitress even sang to us as they have some oldies but goodies playing! A very expansive menu, offering all-day-breakfast, standard lunch sandwiches, wraps, and salads, and dinner entrees (varying between lighter fares, hearty classics, and specialty eats) I opted for the liver & onions, my mother the 83 club, and my daughter (2yrs old) asked the waitress for ham & eggs- to which the very very friendly, helpful waitress walked me through the best option for her-learning they would have to unfortunately upcharge me a fair amount to add ham to the kids omelete meal, but I could just chose the 83 omelete (get peppers on the side) have better side dish options, and toast-and leftovers! How helpful felt like Macy's Santa, putting the customer first- With my meal, I chose the side salad- nothing side about it, the size could have easily been mistaken for a main salad entrée- topped with fresh tomatoes, red onion, and sliced cucumbers- super hearty! The liver & onions was juicy, moist, melt in my mouth- and I loved that it was just liver & onions, not smothered in excessive gravy-really allowing the perfect cook of the liver to be tasted. The plate was quite large, I ate one slice of liver while dining, taking the other home for next day's lunch. I chose red beets as my other side-and while they were the basic canned red beets they were quite yummy as a topping for my salad. My mom's club was packed with meat-paired with spot on crispy fries. Daughter's omelete made her so happy- as suggested the omelete came with ham, cheese, and sausage (it wasn't overly cheesy which was an initial concern, but it was more packed with hearty chunks of meat within three fluffy eggs)- the peppers & onions that came on the side were wonderfully buttery charred-I happily took some to add to my salad- the plate was quite large- it ended up being three meals. The prices were quite low-the dishes were quite large-and the quality was quite delicious...can't beat it! A definite must pit stop if you're driving along! Today was my first time ever visiting the 83 Diner in York, PA. I came staggering in after a very long, challenging day on the road. This place shined like an oasis in the desert. I was hungry, mentally drained, and exhausted from a 16hr day. I parked my truck and headed inside hoping for a quick bite to take back to my truck and call it a night. When I walked in, my mind converted to a dine-in approach. What changed my mood? Not only was the inside bright, clean, and inviting, but the member of the staff who greeted me seemed excited to help me. I felt welcome, wanted. I was glad I chose to dine-in. It was a much needed break from the small confines of my truck. My meal, chicken and waffles, was different than I had envisioned. Yet, that didnt turn out to be a bad thing. I envisioned crispy chicken tenders and thick firm waffles. What I got was hearty chunks of white meat, delicious gravy, and fluffy wedges of pocketed goodness. It was like a southern, "grandma's cooking" variation of the dish. Pleasantly surprised that something new was better than anticipated. The best part of my experience, however, was not the ambience or even the food. It was most certainly the staff. My waitress, Melina, was just as happy to have me as a guest as the hostess who greeted me at entry. She knew the menu front to back. She could rattle off every drink, side, salad dressing, dessert, and option they had available without so much as a pause. Her upbeat, positive attitude was certainly matched by her quick memory. Even further, she was able to manage bringing out my drink, then side salad, and then main course in stages. A nuance often overlooked. Melina was also taking care of her other guests with same uncanny ability and unmistakable charisma without missing a beat. I was absolutely blown away by the level of service. Mostly due to the fact that she seemed genuinely invested in doing her best to leave a lasting impression on her guests and to provide the best service she could. Pride in herself, her work, and the experience given was evident. I wish every place I ate provided the type of experience I had tonight. I may not ever return to York, PA or have the chance to eat here again. But, I know I will always be grateful for the 83 Diner, their food, and the staff that was working tonight for transforming a beleaguered road warrior into a raving fan. Absolutely exceptional. Service was nice, albeit a little bit rushed. They have a huge menu (19 pages) and I wanted to take my time and look through it but she kept coming back and I felt like she was pressuring me us to order. Other than that, no issues. The ribs were tender falling off the bone, the Jagerschnitzel was fried super crispy and the sauce was delicious. All the sides were prepared well, the rice pilaf was a little bland, but I liked the mashed potatoes and onion rings. Green beans were green beans. Desserts looked delicious but did not have room. My wife and I just spent $ 35.00 on 2 meals that were so cheaply made she had BBQ Meatloaf and fries and coleslaw,I had Hot Beef sandwich with fries with gravy. I had the baby back ribs at the recommendation of the waitress. She did not steer me wrong. They were top notch and the sides were hot and fresh (they make their onion rings "in house"). I drive a truck and always avoided this place because they charge you to park unless you eat in the diner, which always put me off stopping. One day I had no choice as I was out of driving hours so I bit the bullet and went in. Now I'm kicking myself for not going in sooner and now even drive thirty minutes out of my way just to eat and park here. Have not had a bad meal yet. Tonight was an amazing experience for us at the diner. My son (6) and I spent the day at HersheyPark and were heading home to baltimore and needed dinner we pulled off and stopped in because he was getting a massive headache. He was so excited our waiter was named Conner (also his name!) but things went downhill, my little guys head was killing him after ordering and he laid down. Server Conner brought him sprite and crackers quickly. My little guy ended up getting sick at the table. Conner got him a cup and was so cool and calm with us. I knew it had to be crappy to have a kid puke at your table. Brought us extra napkins and asked if we needed anything else. Brought us boxes and a fresh puke cup when I said we were tapping out. Ended up bringing me a soda to go. Conner was amazing from start to finish and I know it has to suck to have that happen in your section (thankfully my little dude gets car sick so he's pretty good with aim and there wasn't a mess but still!) I hope Conner knows how great of a person he is to have been so kind to a really crappy situation and we'll definitely be back next time through. The food was even still really good an hour and half later in a hotel room because we definitely weren't making it home tonight. Huge Shout Out to Diner 83 in YORK PA! Ok where to start? Start with the food! Spectacular! Some of our party had breakfast, so they can sleep in! Some had a full dinner with sides. The rib dinner was amazing with sweetest, most tender meat. That's a challenge in itself. Did I mention that it's 8:30 on a 9 o'clock close? The eggs were cooked to perfection, potatoes, crispy and warm and so comforting. There was not one thing to improve on! Can't close this review without praising our waitress! When COVID hit, this business took the opportunity that was afforded it by the shutdown(s) and completely renovated their restaurant to be new and modern. So this was interesting. I felt like this stop could have been a solid four but with some odd events and other details the stars fall to two, maybe one and a half but we all know yelp don't do half's. First impression, welcome to Mel's diner of the 80's where the waitresses still wear some old school outfits and the dessert case is filled with huge cakes and pies. Speaking of the atmosphere I don't believe they did much updating to their dining room in decades. However, I have to point out that the restrooms were very, very clean and seemed updated. Regardless it had a diner feel and that is indeed what they are. What I didn't expect, being a diner and all, is the extensive menu. Too extensive if you ask me. Pages and pages of all sorts of food. They have your standard diner fare, burgers, tuna melts, meatloaf and hot roast beef. But then they had your not so standard diner fare, stir fry, steak Florentine, crab cakes, and ribs. Very all over the place kind of menu. Our visit was for lunch on the way back to Pittsburgh. I eat a salad all most every day for lunch. This day was no exception and I also felt I was playing it pretty safe in ordering the salad. Our waitress was an older lady. She seemed nice enough, well at least at first. There were times she was crazy attentive like filling my coffee mug after only a drink or two then other times I didn't see her for a while, primarily after our food was delivered. So I order, a cup of chili (2.89) and a Greek Salad (8.99), that came with tomato, cucumber, feta cheese, onions Kalamata olives and a side of grilled pita. I added grilled chicken (4.99 up charge) and requested to swap dressings to their Balsamic, which I was happy to see was made in house. My chili was quickly delivered. On first bite I taste an unpleasant sweetness permeating through my mouth. It was so, so sweet. The texture and color also seemed off. There were big chunks of stewed tomatoes, ones that come right out of the can, that were not cooked down all the way and the meat was rather flavorless or should I say, I just tasted sweet. I ate about half, I was hungry, and set it to the side. The waitress asked how I liked it, which was clearly a formality cause I told her I didn't that it was too sweet. She didn't respond back, just took my cup away. I was hoping my salad would really make this decision to eat here better but alas it didn't. My Greek salad was delivered and the portion was nice. I thought wow I wish I would have just ordered the salad and skipped the chili. The chicken was a little clunky. It wasn't cut into strips, more uneven pieces. It was a little anemic, but overall not terrible. There was huge pieces of green pepper on this salad that was not noted on the menu. Not a big deal, I am just not a fan of raw green peppers. But the worst and most unforgiving part was the olives. Ever unexpectedly bite into an olive to crunch down on a tooth busting pit? What the heck?! Who serves a salad covered in olives with their pits intact? At this point I am realizing I have to spit a pit out into a napkin every time I take a bite. Is this Seinfeld and mutton? How lady like am I? I guess I would have fairly enjoyed my salad had I not been weaving and dodging pits the whole time. So here is where they lost the last star. Upon paying, which you do at the register, not from your table, our waitress walked up to ring us up. I am guessing they usually have a hostess that does this. I paid with my card and she asked how much of a tip I want to leave. Well ok I wasn't aware I couldn't just write it in, but I state $6.00 which was about 20%. She adds it and as I am signing my check the hostess comes back to the register where our waitress begins to complain to her that all her tables have been terrible today and she needs a break. What the?! I just gave her a strange glance as she habitually said thanks honey now you have a good day. Since they make crummy chili, can't take the time to pit the olives served on their salads, and the waitress openly in front of her customers complains about them, I am thinking I would never stop in again when back in the area. read more
