My family…read moreand I have been coming here for over 10 years, and we have brought my service dog with us before without an issue. Unfortunately, this visit was completely different. There seemed to be new staff and management, and shortly after arriving, I was questioned about my service dog. I completely understand that businesses are allowed to ask whether a dog is a service animal required because of a disability and what task the dog is trained to perform. I had no problem answering those questions. What I did have a problem with was being repeatedly asked to provide proof or documentation. First the server asked, then the manager asked me again, and then another employee became involved. I even had documentation available and showed it, although under the ADA, businesses generally cannot require service-dog certification, paperwork, or proof as a condition of entry. What made the experience even more uncomfortable was noticing staff talking among themselves and pointing toward me after I explained that I had already answered the permitted questions. It made me feel singled out and unwelcome. My service dog is extremely gentle and well behaved. We have been loyal customers for more than a decade, so being treated this way was especially disappointing. I ultimately decided to leave because I did not feel comfortable giving my business to a restaurant after being treated this way. Unfortunately, batterup lost a longtime customer that day. For anyone dining with a service dog, my experience at Mimi's Cafe was the complete opposite. I felt welcomed and treated respectfully without being made to feel uncomfortable or embarrassed. I hope batter up Fresno provides its staff and management with proper ADA service-animal training so another customer does not have to experience this
