Chorizo, Black Bean & Egg, Mac & Cheese, Malbec Beef, Bacon, Dates & Goat Cheese, Mushroom, Thyme & Blue Cheese, Chicken Curry

Ordered ahead for a box of frozen empanadas and a couple of the amazing dessert cookies called Alfajores. The empanadas baked up great and were stamped on the edges so we could identify each one. Started with the Chorizo and egg which was pleasantly spicy and would make a terrific breakfast. Then the mac and cheese which tasted as it should. The Malbec beef was really meaty and my favorite. The bacon, date and goat cheese was less sweet than I was expecting although it was my daughter's favorite. The chicken curry was her second favorite and mine was the mushroom thyme one. They are small enough that the box of 8 was an ample brunch for two. We'd never heard of Alfajores before, but they were the highlight of the meal. A crumbly cookie sandwich with dulce de leche filling and coated in chocolate. We each got a small one and they were so rich we had to eat them in small bites. (Can't imagine eating a large one.) Will definitely be back in the future!

Empanadas

I was given undercooked empanadas, when asked for an exchange or to be made again they brought the same ones but hotter, the dough is thin and it tastes store bought, the chimichurri sucks, not authentic at all! And the server was kinda rude. Their coffee is actually pretty good and their alfajores saved the day, exquisite and authentic, if you want to try a good Argentinian dessert this is a good place for it, but not the food, not at all.

Mushroom thyme - very good. Super flavor. Light, flaky crust. Malbec Beef is a mouthful of goodness. The Chimichurri sauce is rather mild and delicious. Very good energy.

Enpanadas were excellent! My favorite is the Ratatouille, I'm sure they're all delicious. Great welcoming service.

Note: Cash Only I…read morewas so excited to try Panaderia Evita, I put it on my calendar to not forget. While they have some things going for them, the experience ended up falling a little below expectations. Walking in, you're greeted by the smell of fresh baked goods. The setup is similar to Paris Baguette where you grab a pair of tongs and a tray, and then grab anything you want. Therein lies complaint #1: Other than small price stickers that some amy needs reading glasses for, there are no labels of any kind as to what it what. I can recognize a donut (at least I think so), but with the rest, I couldn't even tell if they were sweet or savory. I grabbed three different pastries, including one that was recommended by the clerk. With half an exception, the feedback is generally the same. This is complaint #2: Except for the one that had a softer, yellower center, the dough was firm with very little give. There's nothing wrong with a little crispness, but in this case, there wasn't much (if any) flakiness. With all of this said, while I am open to returning and trying some more items, I don't see myself breaking down the door to come back or recommending this spot to friends and family.

Panaderia Evita is a true hidden gem in the neighborhood!…read more Panaderia Evita is the type of bakery that if you walked too fast you would miss it. I came across Panaderia Evita during a random walk through Rodgers Park and I'm so happy I stop in that day. The staff is friendly and always speaks when I visit. The inside is spacious and clean not much investment into the decor but the food makes up for it. There are a ton of bakeries along the same block but the pastries from Panaderia Evita stand out from the rest. The homemade donuts are unbelievable! Pastries from the sugar donuts to the Conchas are so sweet and fluffy. I have yet to have a bad pastry from Panaderia Evita! I highly recommend trying the donuts because they're so fluffy and test so fresh. I haven't had a fresh donut like the ones at Panaderia Evita even at places dedicated to donuts.

The "bowls" come in the same cups as a smoothie would come in, but a smoothie only comes in 20oz. I actually appreciate all the different bowl sizes as I only wanted something lighter and I got a small 8oz bowl for one of my kids. My husband and my other kid each ordered a smoothie. You can have unlimited toppings! And there's so many tasty options such as kiwi, spirulina chia pudding, coconut, granola, etc. You could also pay a little more for a fancy topping such as yellow dragonfuit, which is what I got on mine. Sadly the oven wasn't working so no empanada this time.

Post completion of my run on the Green Bay Trail, I discovered Fons - Plant Based Empanadas while…read morebrowsing alternative restaurants within downtown Winnetka. In spite of me having every intention on visiting Stacked & Folded, it became my choice for eats after I saw the Fons - Plant Based Empanadas sign. It is currently located at Winnetka Walk inside of the space formerly held by an ice cream shop known as Adelheidi's Organics. There are plenty of parking spots available along Lincoln Ave in spite of the space being shared with other restaurants and businesses. Believe it or not, there is always someone leaving this area if you cannot find parking upon arriving in downtown Winnetka. I was greeted as soon as I walked in and up to the counter to see what is offered on their display menu. And I must say that I felt very welcome prior to ordering. I ended up ordering three empanadas after the employee recommended it because of the buy three get one free advertisement. Out of empanada choices like Tinga, Sweet Potato Chilli, Chorizo Cheese & Potato, Smoky Mushrooms, Andean, Margherita, Rope Vieja, Pulled BBQ, Corn, and Lumpia; my four empanadas chosen were a Margherita, Corn, and two Pulled BBQ. I took my time choosing my drink because there were lemonade flavors that I absolutely adored like Mango & Strawberry, Dragonfruit & Pomegranate, Passion Fruit & Hibiscus, Turmeric Pineapple, Watermelon & Kiwi, and Blueberry & Lavender. I ended up ordering the Mango Strawberry because it consisted of two flavors I craved at the time. As my order was being made, the employee and I ended up conversing about running which I am very passionate about. I love that no matter how short the shorts I am wearing are or how sweaty I am, a conversation about running is always struck up whenever I visit businesses or restaurants wearing running clothes. Service: 5 (Great) If you wish to dine-in, there are an acceptable amount of tables and seats in the dining area, including stool seats along the window. During the time of my visit there were not any customers at Fons - Plant Based Empanadas. I imagine that because it is new to the area was the reason for it not having much business compared to others in the area. I told the employee that Fons will do good because of how many individuals are within downtown Winnetka on a regular basis. Atmosphere: 4 (Good) As for my food, I must say that I enjoyed the empanadas. Mmm, I nearly ate all four empanadas before even driving my vehicle out of the area, hehe. Oh, yes honey they were delicious! Out of all flavors, the Margherita, Corn, and the Pulled BBQ, I have to say I enjoyed the Pulled BBQ the most. While eating that particular empanada I had the biggest smirk on my face. Food: 5 (Great) Being that I had a great experience, I would gladly order from Fons - Plant Based Empanadas again when visiting downtown Winnetka, likely after running the Green Bay Trail. Service: 5 | Atmosphere: 4 | Food: 5 ~ Peace. Love. Happiness. ~ Thomas G
