I lived across the street from someone who worked here, so we were always seeing the van. When we moved into a fixer-upper, we knew who to call. We got a few bids, but this was the only quote that was broken down into detail by what work was to be done - number of switches, dimmers, lights, etc. I don't just go for the lowest bidder because it usually doesn't work out in the long run. 54 Electric had a competitive and most of all well-organized bid. But the most important thing for me is finding someone who really takes pride in their work, and who will take the time to explain to me what they're doing and why. I'm an engineer, so I know just enough about all this stuff to be dangerous. I gave John a very good review in October, 2017. Since then his service and work has declned considerably. John is a nice person but his responsiveness and keeping his word has declined. After he stepped up and finished my house I asked him to add some new features and install Lutron in my vacation house. He was very difficult to work with on these by not keeping his promised schedule and tried to hurry so much that getting things to work correctly was a big problem. John also said that a defective blind was my problem and he was very hard to work with in completing the project. I would send him messages and several times it took several weeks to get a response. He also would not answer questions I asked even after several attempts to contact him. He also promised me that Lutron thermostats would solve a problem but they did not work and he just said he is learning the business. John also has a second business of doing beer tours in Germany and he went on trips and it was impossible to get ahold of him. With the help of Lutron and the Regional Lutron rep, ALR, A Shade Above is providing support for me. They quickly resolved a problem that I could not get John to respond to. They have a good organization to provide on going support. If you are going to do a home automation system be sure to include a contractual agreement to provide support and retain a portion of the contract until everything is COMPLETELY finished to your satisfaction. read more

Our general contractor referred us to John to help us with a new media set up for our home. He is truly a full service business man! After a detailed estimate and explanation of what he thought would work best for us, he went on to purchase and install everything in a neat and timely manner. I brought in 54 Electric late into a remodel project to install a Lutron HomeWorks QS system, and John (the owner) and his guys integrated smoothly and professionally into the team working on our house. They did great work. A few things stood out to me: * John is sharp. He's very smart and has deep knowledge of how electrical and home automation systems all work. He came up with several creative solutions to working around the older electrical systems installed my house. * Transparency. John was completely up front with his costs and how he charges for things. He showed me the spreadsheet he uses to calculate costs and explained everything clearly. He was also cost conscious: where he saw places to save (e.g. by ordering different switches) or places where the value of the fancy Lutron equipment would be low (closets, bathrooms), he pointed these out and saved me money. I really appreciated all of this. * Service. John dropped everything to come to my house on short notice so that we could keep the project on schedule. His work was completed on time and at very high quality. And he kept checking in with me and tuning the system until it was PERFECT. I really appreciated this. John came in and even before starting the project sat down with us and went over the plans and saved me money by value engineering the project.They completed the project as scheduled. They were really busy and had to reschedule us for about a week later. The day they they were supposed to help us they didn't even show up. I had to email them to find out what happened. When they responded I was told that he was really busy with a bigger job and we weren't the only customers they had let down. I am very disappointed in John in his repeated failure to respond to my request to address issues that I noticed after the work was completed. I have emailed him almost daily for the last 2.5 weeks. He finally responded last Fri saying that he was out of town in an area that was not accesible to wifi and could he schedule to stop by this week without specifying a day. As of today, Tues, I still have not heard from him. How long and how many emails does it take to tell me what day he can stop by? This is very disappointing especially because before the work was done, John communicated with me daily and many times almost immediately after I sent him emails. Ever since I paid him for the work, however, he does not pick up his phone and has responded only once in the last 2.5 weeks. His crew is good but John so far has been very slow to respond to my afterservice needs. I would be very wary of hiring John for this reason. I just have two problems I need addressed: 1) John promised a rack that is 30 tall x 19 x 18. Keeping the rack as small as possible was critical as I wanted to reclaim the upper closet space for hanging coats and I made this need very clear from the beginning. Instead the rack he installed measures 38 tall x 20 x 20. John says the rack he spec'd out is no longer available even though I see plenty of AV racks online that are that size or even smaller than the one he spec'd. Since changing the rack will require taking everything apart, I was willing to compromise and have him adjust the top two items to sit lower on the rack so that I can maximize the space to hang coats above. 2) the AV closet feels warm even though we installed a new vent fan system so I want him to check to make sure the fan and temperature sensor is working properly. I am still hopeful that John will stop by but it's been extremely frustrating having to make this request repeatedly without resolution. read more

OK at first. He came out relatively promptly and promised to consult with the city about replacing my panel and sub-panel and get back to me with a bid in a few days. That was weeks ago. I subsequently followed-up several times by phone and email with little or no response. I finally got him on the phone more than a week ago in which he apologized for not having my bid in and saying that he was a Giants season ticket holder and it was the playoffs but that he would get it in in the next couple of days. I still haven't heard back from him. Guess what: We all have jobs, even when our favorite teams are playing in the playoffs. Most of us do our jobs regardless. I have been using 54 Electric for four years now. John and his crew installed a wall mounted plasma tv in my living room and had to rewire my entire living room which had a great deal of built in areas to work around. The job was impeccable. John explains everything very clearly and also has many ideas and suggestions for upgrading or making our existing media system easier to manage. We are not tech savvy but John made is easy for us to navigate our system. Recently we had John come and organize a computer desk with a big mess of wires and cords which we were unable to organize in any comprehensive way. The work was amazing. I recently had John and his crew install a new entertainment system. It turned out perfectly. They were extremely efficient and when the job was done, it was a total turnkey installation. One thing that I noticed was that my previous system had scores of lights blinking on and off all the time. Now, there are no blinking lights! Quite an improvement. John and his team were great to work with throughout our long remodeling process. In the planning phase John listened to our needs and offered several possible solutions without trying to upsell us or sell us things we didn't need. During initial construction they pre-wired both inside and landscaping and when it was finally time, they promptly showed up do do final installation and programming. Throughout the process John was very responsive and in addition to installing the A/V systems he helped solve the problems with our home wifi system caused by our thick stucco walls.
