Firstly, I looked on youtube to try and fix my broken lamp fixture myself, that's where I found on youtube, the Stanford Electric Works' electrician Danny's "Daboy Lamp and Fixture Repairs". I figured I should just let Danny fix my broken lamp fixture which is located inside a tall bookshelf. It now looks brand new. Wow, in this day of big box retailers (I hate them FYI) its nice to see a small business that is still thriving and been around 100 years to boot! In the case of Stanford Electric Works it was the 4th stop in our quest for a mid century modern exterior light for our Eichler Home (more on that below) Stanford Electric Works is a small store but it has quite a selection on display. We were able to find a few lights that may work for us. We did not get to speak to anybody there as the one person there was busy with another customer in back. However, their selection and prices were on point so it worked well for us. Sometimes having a distinctive home is both a blessing and a curse. In our case we are lucky enough to own an Eichler. For those unfamiliar, Joseph Eichler was a developer (primarily in the SF Bay Area and LA) who between 1949 and 1966 built what is now termed Mid Century Modern or if you will "California Modern" tract homes. Taking cues from not only Frank Lloyd Wright, The Eames, et al, and the famous Case Study Homes they bought affordable high end architecture to the masses. All told over 11,000 of these homes were built. Given the distinct, love it or hate it style, changing stuff is difficult if you want it to look right. In this case with our recent (yes I did it all myself) exterior refresh we decided to correct a wrong with our exterior lighting and find something in character with the home. Wyatt is an electrician genius, and I will for sure go to him first for my next electrical problem. I am sure he never saw a puzzle like this one, and he figured it out by pure brain power. He was fast, methodical, and went through the required algorithm to get the answer. He had a bunch of identical looking half assembled parts on the table with different bulbs/bases/cans, and he kept track of everything in his head without making any mistakes - impressive. He deduced that my replacement identical track lights from the same company with the same model number were wired differently at the factory than the identical older lights, and this was why they did not light when put in the same track slot. He took them apart, moved the jumper connections, and made all the lights work. A different electrician failed to figure this out when given the same info, and I for sure would not have figured it out ever. read more

I just picked up 2 lamps I had repaired at Stanford Electric. Overall I am happy with the repair but there was a big miscommunication on the pricing when I dropped them off. Short story - in the end they honored the labor price quoted; the manager wanted to be sure I left happy and I appreciate that. It's all about setting the right expectations because I would not have paid for one of the lamps to be repaired if I had been quoted the correct minimum labor fee initially. The manager apologized a couple of times and I would go back and recommend them. Next time I will just be sure to have the initial quote written down on the work order (they don't give anything to you at drop off; I asked for a photo copy). Details I asked for an estimate and was quoted a labor price to just look at them + parts. I was hesitant (looking like a deer in the head lights) and said I really didn't like one of the lamps. The employee clarified that the labor price was to look at both lamps and also said if the sockets were in fact the only problem (loose and shorting out) that it would be labor plus parts. I said "that's a different story if it's the price to look at both" and agreed. When I picked up the lamps, the labor was over 2.5 times what I was quoted. The employee who quoted me said he told me something else ($5 more than what he actually quoted) but admitted he thought they would be able to combine the labor cost to look at both. Yes mistakes happen so I was happy that, in the end, the manager honored the amount I was quoted. Thank you! My review would have be 5 stars had it not been for the issues I mentioned here. Side note: both times I walked in and up to the counter both employees were busy. They weren't super friendly (they were busy). However they did acknowledge me and let me know they would be with me in a minute. I did not have the same experience as others on Yelp so perhaps they have taken note of the prior feedback and made a change for the better. read more

Horrible service, zero professionalism, extremely expensive, and incredibly rude. - They charge you from the time they supposedly leave their office. You have to pay for the time they take to get to your home depending on where they really leave from. Their rates are very high too. - This is not the worst. The experience I had was horribly stressful! I hired them to replace a switch. They installed a detective one. It took me months to have it replaced. I had to argue for months with the owner that I am not supposed to pay for the bad switch they installed. He wasted my time arguing that they were not responsible for the bad switch, but that the manufacturer was. He totally denied his responsibility even though they are the ones who chose and purchased the defective switch for me. It does not end there. He then argued that the problem was not with the switch but with my electrical installation even though it was the same kind of switch as the one who was replaced (notice the different argument. He is trying something else now ...). I proved from the symptoms that it had nothing to do with my electrical installation but everything to do with a bad switch. I finally convinced him after stressful months of arguing and told that what I said was nonsense. He was very rude over the phone, not at all professional. The opposite of what his video claims. Then his tech came with a brand new switch to prove to me that the problem was not with the switch. OOPS they were wrong the whole time of course. Their was no problem at all with the new switch. The tech looked puzzled and had to admit that there was something wrong with the switch they gave me. After that I haven't heard anything from Chris. ZERO APOLOGY! And all this because he tried to save a few dollars by having me pay for their bad switch! read more

Stanford Electric is where I will now go for any electrical issues I have. They are licensed electricians and do a thorough job. I had them come to fix an outlet that was not correct for my dishwasher and kitchen light. Also had them put in lighting under kitchen cabinets and a new bathroom fan/light. I take daily walks around the residential neighborhoods away from University Ave and have come across many interesting stores. One particular store of interest is Stanford Electric Works. They carry lots of hard to find home and business lighting, fixtures, lamps, and electrical accessories. Their showroom is small, cramped, but fully stocked with upscale brands and an array of choices. I can never find anything at Home Depot and I thought Orchard Supply Hardware carried most specialty lighting hardware and accessories until I took a look at Stanford Electric's supply. And boy was I wrong! Where have I been all these years? After speaking to their experienced staff, I practically found everything I was looking for in specialty fluorescent lights no matter what size they were. Both the company I work for and in my home bathroom have nonconforming sized fluorescents where I could easily find replacements for. I just bring in a sample of what I'm looking for, and the staff finds the exact matching replacement piece. Pricing is not expensive and it's similarly priced to your local Ace Hardware. No matter how small or large your electrical project is, Stanford Electric Work's experienced staff will help assist you with all your lighting and electrical needs. I usually cringe when I see the name "Stanford" or "Palo Alto" in the name of a business, because I assume that means they'll be pricey. But their hourly rates were in line with the other places I priced out, and their electrician worked super fast, so my overall bill (based on hours) was modest. The electrician they sent out (to replace about 6 light fixtures) was a very professional, knew his stuff, was articulate and on-time. He quickly swapped out the lights, made a couple of useful observations about my house's wiring setup for my future reference (which I appreciated), and was out the door. It took a fraction of the time that I had anticipated. I'll definitely use them again. read more

I've had a couple of under-cabinet fluorescent lights die on me over the past two years, and have been happy to discover Stanford Electric as an efficient option for getting them replaced. In both cases, they set an appointment and were able to come replace my light fixture in under an hour. (The other option is to replace the ballast, but this turns out to actually be more expensive in my case than just switching the fixture.) Actually just had a third light go out this week, so called them again and am in the queue. I think they tend to spend more of their energy on larger jobs, so sometimes you have to be willing to wait a couple weeks for a time window to come available. Nonetheless, I'm definitely finding this preferable to either (a) flailing at the the installation myself or (b) paying a generalist handyman to learn it on the job (which I've done once before and would prefer to avoid). They quickly diagnosed the issue to be a faulty transformer and replaced it with an LED driver that worked with the new bulbs we purchased it. Wyatt, the electrician who came on site was fantastic. He was personable, knowledgable, and most importantly a fantastic troubleshooter who ultimately did a great job solving the issue we had despite having to put on an electrical version of Sherlock Holmes hat and cape. Had prior experience with Stanford Electric, so when we were thinking of installing overhead lighting in our living room, we used their services again. The job entailed pulling power from a nearby outlet, and running wiring through existing walls to install cable overhead lighting. The final bill for labor and equipment from Stanford came to over $4,000 so it was a significant job. After the job was finished, we started encountering problems with our heating system. After some diagnosis, we traced the problem to the new light switches or new wiring causing interference with our thermostats! The effect was immediate, and consistently repeatable. Every time you turned the light on, the thermostat reading would drop to 31 degrees no matter what the inside or outside temperature was, and the heater would kick on. Turn OFF the light switch, and the thermostat would immediately revert to regular readings of normal room temperature. Every time. We called Stanford back and they sent an electrician over to look into the problem. They said they would conduct research and would call us back in a week. Two weeks later, not hearing anything we called them again. They claimed to still be doing research and would call us back in a week. This process of offering a call back in a week, only to not hear anything went on for over two months. Finally, after one more time of chasing them down for a response, they said they couldn't help us! So we're now in the process of working with other electricians to fix the problem they created. Not only was the electrical issue caused by their installation frustrating enough, but their lack of support and follow through was truly not professional. After repeated promises of call-backs that never occurred, I would not recommend their services, and would certainly not use them again. read more

Friendly, good selection of attractive lighting fixtures (mostly high-end stuff), surprisingly competitive prices, but a bit lacking in customer service... Wanting to patronize a local business, and thinking it would be an advantage to deal with a local brick-and-mortar place (rather than an Internet retailer) should anything go wrong, we purchased a pretty expensive lamp sold by Stanford Electric... Lamp was not carried in stock -- not surprising, since the manufacturer (Hubbardton Forge) boasts of all "hand-crafted" products. So we put down our 50% deposit and placed the order at the end of September. (Plenty of time before Thanksgiving and the holidays -- so we thought...) By mid-October I hadn't heard anything from Stanford Electric so I called; they contacted Hubbardton Forge and then called me back to say that HF was experiencing "quality control problems" and expected our lamp to take a couple more weeks, then another week to ship from Vermont to Palo Alto. (I began to worry about hosting Thanksgiving dinner in the dark...) A week before Thanksgiving and still no word... Called to Stanford Electric requesting a status update -- they said they'd call the manufacturer. Stanford Electric calls me back to say that the lamp "should be here by Thanksgiving"... ("Are you sure?", I asked, "because I would sure hate to ask my Thanksgiving guests to eat in the dark... Is there any way to push the manufacturer a bit?" SE's reply: "Should be here in time..." On the Wednesday before Thanksgiving Day, still no word from either SE or manufacturer... I call SE in the morning and they say that they haven't heard anything, but will call the manufacture and then call me back. By 1pm Pacific Time, haven't heard back from SE, so I call Hubbardton Forge directly -- "Any update on my lamp?" After some runaround trying to determine the order number (I never got that info from Stanford Electric...), was finally told that my lamp had shipped a week earlier, and that FedEx tracking says it's on the truck for delivery that afternoon -- yay! ("By the way," I ask, "did you get a call earlier today from Stanford Electric?" Reply: "Didn't talk to me -- but we log all our customer service calls, so perhaps they talked to someone else... Uh no -- nothing in our call log from Stanford Electric today.. (!!!)" Long story short, I was able to pick up the lamp Wed afternoon and spent the night before Thanksgiving installing it. (Unfortunately, though I got the lamp hung, the wiring was more complicated than I expected -- and I was too tired and under too much pressure [it was after midnight by that point!] to figure it out... So the lamp looked nice -- but we still had to bring in other lights to light our Thanksgiving meal!) The day after Thanksgiving (with the pressure now off!) I was able to figure out the wiring and get the lamp working. In the process of adjusting things however, I found that the mount for the lower diffuser glass had very poorly cut threads -- so the diffuser glass was not held very securely! Back to Stanford Electric... Stanford Electric quickly understood the problem and said that they'd contact Hubbardton Forge and get replacement parts shipped out quickly. That was the Monday following Thanksgiving. Another long story short, I just picked up the replacement parts today, the Thursday before Xmas (Sunday)... While I'm sure that the manufacturer deserves its share of the blame for the problems and delays, I am quite disappointed in Stanford Electric. Even if all the problems stemmed from the manufacturer, I never felt like Stanford Electric was working very hard on my behalf. They seem like nice enough people -- I wasn't treated rudely or anything like that -- but "indifferent" is how I'd describe their customer service. I'd like to recommend them, but I simply can't after this disappointing experience... read more

Don't expect proactive customer service! I brought in a lighting fixture that stopped working and asked if they could troubleshoot it asap as they were my dining room lights. It took over 1 month before I received a phone call back from them saying they had tested the parts and verified they are not functional (no surprise!) and they would talk to the service rep of the manufacturer of the light and let me know. Over the next 4 months, I never heard back. When I called to inquire, I was told, they were "working on it". Finally gave up and retrieved my lights. read more
