The coffee and donuts deal for $5 is a great deal. The coffee is average but the donuts are probably the best donuts I have ever eaten. Way better than other donut shops in Vancouver. Well, Vancouver finally has some quality coffee shops. It's not quite up to US west coast third wave standards, but it's a nice atmosphere (if somewhat reminiscent of Verve) and the baristas know what they're doing. One of the better cappuccinos I've had in Canada. read more

I challenge you to find a better cup of coffee (because I'll be too busy enjoying the BEST coffee ever at 49th Parallel to take on that challenge). I love a good cup of coffee, but I've never been one to be commit to one brand. I like to explore many different vendors, and despise those who get stuck on a Starbucks only coffee regime - blech. That being said, 49th Parallel may have me hooked. I drink my coffee black with a small amount of honey/ sugar. After taking my first sip of 49th Parallel's regular drip java, I was floored. My only complaint would be that they have a honey flavor syrup and not the real deal on the counter. Regardless, I could drink it without the aid of sweetener, it's that delicious. The shop itself is a large space, nearly 100 seats, many of which are usually occupied at peak hours. It's very Restoration Hardware - industrial with exposed brick, wood & metal elements. The perfect setting to hang back and get your caffeine fix. A great compliment to their fantastic coffee is Lucky's doughnuts- get the orange pistachio or salted caramel. read more

I am in love with this place! (Main st location) it started with a physical attraction when I walked in... You eyes are filled with fresh and yummy doughnuts (my fave is the mango). But doughnuts aren't the only attraction, their coffee is amazing (either hot or cold). The aroma gets me going as it smells so good. 4/5 for coffee and doughnuts. Coffee is above average compared to chains, at or slightly below average compared to other independents. The doughnuts are all fresh and taste decent, but I haven't had one yet that makes me stop and take a moment to enjoy it. For reference I've tried the dulce de leche, chocolate old fashioned, french cruller, creme brulee, classic old fashioned, and ham and cheese croissant. 3/5 for experience. One of our drinks didn't come out and when we asked the barista about it, we had to get back in the lineup so that our order could be confirmed before it was made. By that point somebody else had taken our chairs. and one of the coffees was cold. 3.5 stars overall. I didn't dock any points for this but one thing to note is that this coffee shop is very busy, especially on weekends (I don't think the owners can do anything about this- there's lots of seating and quick staff, it's just that popular!). Expect a lineup that moves pretty quickly, and usually a few minutes of looking for someone to leave so you can sit down. There is no wi-fi on weekends in the mornings if you're looking to study- it is vibrant and loud, probably not the ideal place to go for studying. Worth a visit at least once! read more

Studying at the long tables is great, and I love that on the South side of the cafe they have ample room to hang your coat and backpack. The only thing that could be improved upon, is having at least one gluten-free food option. The doughnuts are expensive but worth it. I recommend the PB and J or the Lemon Bismarck. The drip coffee always tastes kind of watery and sweet but the espresso is great. Clean aesthetic, typically pretty unpretentious service. read more

Can't decide whether I like this place or not. The good: coffee and doughnuts done well. I particularly liked the Peanut butter and jelly. Sure to please guests from out of town. The bad: crowded and unwelcoming for dog owners in a dog friendly neighbourhood. I do understand that if the patio is crowded on a warm day that dogs are best kept away from the seating area. I sat down with my coffee and small dog on a colder day when the patio was empty and was asked to leave. So I left and pretty much never went back again. When I've been dog free it's been too crowded to find a seat so I just keep going. read more

Went there to try their espresso, paid $3 for it. That's approximately how much they pay for 2 pounds of their beans. It was a double espresso, although I only wanted a single, but they can't pull a single, because they have the bottomless portafilters only!! Management get regular portafilters, there are people out there that want just a single espresso. The taste was ok, nothing special, I had better espresso for less then $3. Seems just like an upscaled Tim Hortons with less varieties. read more

Doughnuts were excellent. We purchased a variety but the matcha bismark was the best. It has a nice matcha taste and a slight hint of yuzu citrus (I think its from from the glaze). The peanut butter & jam and the french cruller was also very nice. Lots of seating and good coffee. You can buy the 49th Parallel beans here as well. Absolutely lovely and charming cafe! They have a $5 for a coffee and a donut combo (but it has to be drip coffee, not any espresso). People seems friendly and there're lots of tables and sofas. The only complaint would be that there's no wifi internet before 4pm and no plug in, which is frustrating when you want to work in the cafe. read more

First experience at this location was terrible. Although the donuts were good, the service was not. The cashier girl was nice, asked what me and my friend wanted and treated us like regular customers. However, a second girl behind the counter rudely interrupted us while we were ordering donuts and basically kicked us out saying that we cannot sit there and eat because we cannot have "other" coffee shop drinks in their store. Her coworkers looked embarrassed seeing her talk to us in a rude manner, felt bad for them. We had Starbucks in our hands and decided we wanted to sit down and have donuts. Whats the matter with that? Its not like we didn't buy anything and decided to sit down at their place to hang around. She had the audacity to tell me that she could pour our fraps into their small coffee cups. Why does it matter? I was very close to cancelling my order and just walking out. But I wanted donuts. So I got them anyway. Update: obviously the manager's response rests my case, he is petty and cannot take criticism based off of other 1 star reviews. That type of attitude just shows how great of a business they are, bad management = bad business. No wonder some of the coworkers look depressed when I came in. Instead of apologizing for the inconvenience he has decided to spend 30 minutes of his life trying to get back at people who are expressing their own opinions. Waited till my 5th visit before I reviewed. I had some hope that my first couple of visits were just lemons. Overall, its a great place to chit chat or be overwhelmed with students(u can't avoid them!). Environment is great for a quick blog update while scarfing down their superb doughnuts hard. BUT! I can't seem to enjoy their coffee. It has this sour flavour(if your into that) which is usually a sign the coffee went bad. People say its just dark coffee. No, i love dark coffee and this stuff is just plain sour. Maybe that's just their style. The expresso cups are impossible to handle, feels like I'm constantly going to drop it when I take a sip. The milk/cream dispensers are just dumb. They may look chic, but you WILL pour too much into your drink. Will i come back? Just for doughnuts. read more

Naturally the allure of doughnuts and coffee drew us in, even though we realized we should really be saving room for dinner. This was my first trip to 49th Parallel and it was great! The drip coffee was strong, tasted fresh, and lacked the sometimes typical watery, acidic character I've been keen on avoiding these days. I ate a chocolate covered old fashioned, which was complex and not too sweet. The girlfriend ate a plain glazed doughnut, which was wonderfully yeasty and had the right balance of sweetness and breadyness. Ambiance was wonderful with the oh-so-cool warm industrial feel. Good donuts but the drip coffee was sour for some reason I don't mind mild, but it was definitely sour. Good location, but there's a pretentious feeling there - from the over engineered lattes to the planks with the tea cups used. Hot chocolate was more warm than hot but the chocolate had a great taste. I'd prefer a little more down to earth if possible. The type and variety of donuts saved the review however. Okay, easily one of the BEST coffees I've had during my visit to Vancouver. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. I wanted to take home some of their coffee beans but needed them ground since I don't have a coffee grinder at home. They asked me exactly how I wanted them ground and helped me out with that. I got an iced latte and added a couple of pumps of their cane sugar syrup. So good!! I had to grab a couple of their Lucky's doughnuts and so glad I did!! My son polished off the long John while my other son and I polished off the lemon meringue! They're not overly sweet and the deep fried dough is done just crispy enough. I may have to go back for more. There's a whole leaf iced tea I want to try next!!! read more

Great coffee, great doughnuts, great location and decor. Definitely one of my favourite places to stop and refuel when I am heading into Vancouver. I have enjoyed several different brew methods here and they were all excellent. While this is a fantastic place for a cup of coffee, it seems that everyone else knows it too and as such it gets pretty busy here and can be tough to find a seat sometimes. Also, it can get quite loud inside, so if you are looking for a cozy, quite corner to read a book, this might not be it. All in all a wonderful place that shouldn't be missed! read more

49th Parallel was a quick detour stop as we are finishing our first visit to Vancouver. I love the coffee atmosphere I have seen in Vancouver, and 49th parallel was a great ending. Coffee is on the strong side but isn't cheap (esp the espresso at $3), but the staff is great, the barista know their business and the atmosphere is inviting. I grabbed a cappuccino and wife took the latte. I was tempted with the apple bacon donut while the wife chose the healthier cheese scone.
