It's a bit tricky to first find: Located next to Gattos Pizza and in the same building as Indian Oak (but way in the back) is one of my favorite distilleries, 451 Spirits. This is a smaller distillery. When you walk in you will be greeted by the owner. He is also an artist/musician and his labels reflect that aspect of his personality, wonderfully creative. He uses this space for multiple things: a distillery, art studio, art gallery, and jam session room. You will see a drum set and a few guitars. Art collaborations hang on his wall- It's pretty cool. His distilled products and merchandise occupy the front corner by the entrance you will be offered samples of anything you may be interested in trying. However, it's more a grab and go type of distillery "shop". A huge plus is not only are the items delicious, the price point is quite reasonable ...yesterday we purchased a new type... a vodka he called Bloody Mary Vodka.... Made specifically to enhance bloody Mary's. Wow, is it good and only $20! The products and experience while tasting are all five star, but due to the fact there is no traditional bar to hang out at like the other distilleries on the distillery trail .... Deducted a star. Very cool very niche place. My husband and I visited this distillery as part of the distillery trail and were not disappointed! Loved the unique and creative flavors the owner creates as well as the "elevated open garage vibe" with all of the owners cool art, musical instruments, and other cool stuff. 451 is a distillery in Columbus. It's pretty hard to find. This is hidden along Indianola. It's a small batch distillery. This still has quite a good selection. It's kind of hard to find if you don't know the area. It helps if you know some of the bars. The distillery shares an address with India Oak. On Yelp it says it's in Suite C. This is more like a garage. It's in the building next to Wildflower Cafe. There's some parking spots between these. Any alcohol you're buying for the first time should be tried first. Good thing it has times for tastings. They also have a tour. Availability is limited. You sign up through the website. It's not like the bigger distilleries in Columbus. There's a limited amount of space. Each selection tried is something I would get again. It's real nice to go on a tour. The gin is good and so is the whiskey. read more

If you only go to one distillery while in Columbus please go here! I was drawn in by the photos of guitars hanging up, and by the interesting selection of spirits offered. I stopped in on a random weeknight and found the master distiller manning the shop solo. He's very affable and down to earth, and eager to talk about his spirits and process. What I love about this shop is how creative they are with their spirits. Their standard fare spirits, including rum, gin and whiskey, all have unique flavor profiles that show evidence of herbal experimentation. Their rum is barrel aged in fresh bourbon barrels, not used ones like everyone else does. The result is a more oak and vanilla forward taste. Their gin is balanced with so many different herbal notes that it's quite nice to drink neat, unlike all of the other brands that just taste harshly of juniper. The highlight for me was the absinthe. It was so beautiful, subtle and floral that it did not need the sugar cube. This is one excellent absinthe, and the only one I'm aware of distilled in Ohio. One last note... they have some crazy limited run spirits, including a pizza liquor where during distillation, the alcohol passes through slices of pizza and sun roasted tomatoes! read more

451 Spirits - a copper still in a workshop - Distilleries Near Me - Columbus, Ohio

My wife and I did the tour of 451 Spirits about a year ago, and so I decided to make it an event that my Meetup group could do together. For $10, the tour and tastings are a great value. The guy who gives the tour is a pretty cool, laid-back guy who seems very much into experimentation and to serving the local community. He doesn't seem to have ambitions of branching out into the country as a whole, so he is able to experiment with small batches and to make "happy mistakes" that might actually turn out to be a success. The tour and tastings last about an hour. You get about half an hour of explanation of the distilling process, smelling various jars of spirits at different stages of the process, when you can ask questions and get to know how what you are about to sip is made in more detail. During the tasting, you get sample 7 or 8 (I can't remember exactly how many) different liquors that include gin, whiskey, absinthe, rum, and a couple of flavored liquors as well. During the tasting, you get a good explanation of each one that you taste, the ideas behind their creation, why the labels on the bottle were created as they were, etc. If you're looking for a fun way to spend an hour before or after dinner some evening, give them a try. You might like something you taste, and you might wind up taking something home with you! read more

Go, go, go! Quick, fast and in a hurry! Chad is amazing! Ok, now that I got that out - the place is small, I've been in garages bigger than the entire distillery but here's something you don't get in other distilleries, personality. Chad was our tour guide, he's also the main man behind the scenes so he could give us the entire break down from beginning to end. The tasting was so much fun, you get to try a little bit of everything. I'm not a Gin fan, I actually really dislike Gin, but the way he makes it, you taste the heart and soul and freshness of the ingredients. All the herbs are purchased locally which is awesome. It was a great date night choice for my husband and I. I'm sure we'll be stopping back in for another bottle of Dear Johnny :) read more
