While on a road trip, my friends and I happened across this joint set behind a gas station. While it had a simple front with giant blue letters saying, "4 Star Diner". I almost didn't notice that it was in fact a restaurant. I jokingly said to my friends that it must be good since the parking lot was full. I was completely correct! The inside is a simple old fashioned diner atmosphere while customers of every age crowded around the tables, though I did notice a majority were 55+. It isn't spotless and time has taken it's toll on the old building, but the food and service completely made up for it. the menu had a delightful assortment of delicious homegrown favorites from fresh biscuits and gravy to steak. The ham my friend had ordered was nearly bigger than her plate! And two teensy strips of bacon are not enough, instead we each had 5 huge hunks. We all had left overs at the end of the meal. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because of the condition of the building itself. So if you are turned off by an older environment, pass it. As an interracial couple, my husband and I are quite use to the stares, sometimes hostile energy, stand offish treatment, and of course the anticipated question of "Is this together?" but today we just weren't feeling it. It's almost 2020 and people still act like they have NEVER seen a mixed race husband and wife before. The moment we stepped into this DUMP as there were flies everywhere, it went downhill from there. The waitress took what seemed to be FOREVER to come to our table let alone give us any sort of eye contact. Like I said we get this crap all of the time and it's been pretty consistent during our 15 years of marriage. Anyways, she finally or should I say reluctantly got our drinks and food order and said it would be out shortly. We contemplated on whether we should just get up and walk out but decided to give it a try. I got the Southwest patty melt with a side salad and my husband got a Mushroom and Swiss burger with fries. Although greasy, the food was ok. She never came back to check on us much anyways so we just asked for the check. It's really sad and pathetic how ignorant AND closed minded people are still to this day. My husband and I are in no way surprised and/or delusional about this backward thinking and treatment really and have actually come to expect it, especially depending on the "region" we're in. They literally stared at us the entire time we ate, lol. That's sad. My husband will stare right back at them directly in their eyes and they finally look away in embarrassment! It's also classic how you can buy them for a dime when they ask "Is this together" in which both my husband and I reply "Why wouldn't it be?" Knowing they didn't ask the same race couple in front of us or behind us the same question. This is one of the best diners ever. Anyplace that has "Bowl of beans with cornbread" or "Bowl of stew" on the menu is my kind of place. When the special board has chocolate pudding as one the sides you can choose, does it get any better? The dinner rolls are a thing of beauty- just gorgeous. The cornbread is the real deal - not sweet & sticky. I was too stuffed to try a piece of pie but I suspect they deliver on that, too. The waitresses are attentive and literally race around the place taking care of people. As for the review from the mixed race couple who felt ostracized, sorry that happened. Maybe something else was going on or you had bad luck with your particular server. I saw a little bitty sign along I40 for this place. We like diners so we gave it a try. Score! Traditional small town diner with the $5.99 lunch plate. We had Mexican casserole and a small chicken fried steak. Cucumber salad, beets, spinach, and fried okra finished the plates. Wow, I mean, what a perfect 24/7 diner. Our family was out and about adventuring, and when the night was over all we could think sounded good for dinner was diner food. With it being close to 10pm our options were limited......to fast food :/. So I jumped on yelp and searched "diner" and 4 star diner popped up. I am so glad we drove out of the way to get here. So worth it! Just good ol' diner food. Everything we ordered came out fresh and perfect. Kid friendly! Even as late as we got there. Christine was our waitress and we could not have had a better server for our first time. So sweet, nice, and helpful, she answered our questions and didn't act like she has answered the same question a million times like she probably has. Oh and how can I forget the pies! You walk in the door and are greeted by a revolving pie tower! Mouthwatering! Their little shop area in the front has some cute things and some nice little purses, great to get if you had a winning night at the casino :). There we were, en route to Fayetteville, in dire need of food. Our stomachs were howling, calling for pancakes and eggs. So we stopped at the 4 star diner. How bad could it be? Who knows, these places are usually either hit or miss. Regrettably so, it was a major miss... And on all cylinders. We were seated only to find a fly swatter responsible for many recent casualties lying on the table. Fresh fly guts were everywhere. The eggs came smelling like sardines (or dirty feet, we couldn't tell) with a powdery texture. The bacon was chewy and very subpar. The chocolate chip pancakes were simply too chocolatey. Our friend Jack did nothing but complain about his chicken fried steak sandwich, calling it "chicken fried shit."
