After calling smog check businesses in Alameda that wanted high $50s to low $70s to do the deed, received a quote of $40 "out the door" for my 1996 6-cylinder Camaro, i.e., including the certificate transmitted to DMV . Yep, an OLD car. Hugely enjoyed the drive and the traffic meant my engine was nice & warm when I arrived. Only one person ahead of me, so my test was very quick, less than 20 min. The owner said she has another place in Alameda. Am now telling all my friends, neighbors to GO THERE and not be ripped off, particularly if they have an "old" car. (Yes, I passed. This is definitely the cheapest deal on smog I could find in the East Bay. $40.00 out the door. I have a large 2001 Isuzu Trooper (SUV) and incurred no additional costs as it seems some places do. I was in and out in 25 minutes. It looks like only one car can be serviced at a time, so there may be a wait if there are people in front of you. The owner was helpful and answered my questions. The station is located in a very nice Berkeley neighborhood which is perfect for a nice walk while you wait. I have gone to this station two times now and the experience was identical on both occassions. read more

I had a great experience here, even though it is first come, first served, and I had to wait about 15 minutes. Bring CASH and your DMV notice, and you should be set in minutes, providing your car passes. It is a crowded location, hardly any room to wait, they do seem busy, and so is the accompanying gas station, so you might get there when the employees are not in the best mood, I guess. But I know of no cheaper place in the area. They are a "star" shop, if you need that. read more

I went to this company's San Pablo Avenue location in Berkeley, I used to go to the old company that was there and figured it would be legit after looking at Yelp reviews of this company. It wasn't legit at all; charged me $74 to smog a 1995 Honda, after giving me "$10 off," and then failed it with a reading over 1100 ppm at 15 mph. Then Dan the attendant offers to buy the car from me as I told him I was selling it, told me the EPG valve was to blame for the smog failure, and offered to take it off my hands without me smogging. When I came back two days later to offer it to him he had forgotten who I was, told me he call me, then never did. I waited a week then took it to my auto shop today and they passed it easily at a price tag of $55. I'd stay away from here. read more

Incompetent -- and just to make up for it, customer unfriendly. They said my car failed one element of the smog check (the ignition timing), which I doubted. I went back and told them I thought they were wrong -- which they denied. I then took the car to Pat's Auto Services, where they confirmed I was correct and that 4 Less had probably done the procedure wrong (failed to disconnect the temperature sensor as specified). Took it back to 4 Less Smog, where it passed. But 4 Less wouldn't apologize, wouldn't pay for the charge at Pat's -- and denied my suggestion that they at least give me a future free test to make up for the four extra hours it took me (waiting twice in line at the DMV). My guess is that 4 Less was just too lazy to do the test correctly and never disconnected the wire -- they told me that pulling the wire didn't make any difference, whereas Pat found it made the entire difference between the correct setting and what 4 Less initially reported. 4 Less now says it was because the timing scale was dirty, and they should have failed it for that -- but a swipe with a rag or paper towel could have solved that if that had been the real problem, plus they never objected to the condition of the scale when they made the wrong reading. read more

I had a very favorable experience with Dan, the technician. I had called earlier in the day to inquiry about charges and if there would be extra for my small truck which seems to be standard,he said no. I also asked what was the latest time I could get there before he closed, he said 5:30p. I gave him my name, arrived by 5:30. There were a few other people in front of me, one man had problems with his truck and Dan gave him advice on what to do. All this took time, which I expected so no problem. It was my turn after 6pm and Dan took me no problem even though he closes at 6. Mine was quick, I paid the $28 cash per the special I mentioned. All very easy and efficient. I recommend this to anyone who wants to save some money (my local mechanic charges $58!), so a little wait was just fine. I will go back again. And kudos to Dan a small business person for offering the website special. read more

the guy was very friendly and nice. the test takes only about 15 minutes. their price is also very reasonable compared to other shops nearby. great experience! highly recommended. one tip though: this place is quite popular. to avoid waiting in line, go either on weekdays or early Saturday morning. and remember to bring cash/check with you. read more

Why do you have to write a bad review about this business.?The man is the only one there doing all the work in this very busy shop, not to mention the impossible maneuvering of cars in and out of the cramped place right next to the gas pumps! He is just the technician and doesn't write the ads on the internet. He has to charge what the business tells him to charge, he has to take the cash or checks that the business tells him to take. Just like any other business, he has to run it the way they want it. And he is not there to negotiate prices but to just do the service for you. So treat him decently, please. Yes, I know you have "precious time" that you don't want to waste, but blaming the sole technician at a very busy shop is just selfish and mean. Have some patience and respect for the overworked people that do these jobs. Just because you woke up in a bad mood don't dump it on innocent others. Do us all a favor and stay home! read more
