They look good but had a weird gritty texture
    Eileen T.

We decided to come here for breakfast since they opened early. Service was very fast and friendly and the ambiance felt like a diner, loud but welcoming. One person in our group got the steak and eggs, another the wahoo breakfast with pancakes, bacon and eggs and the other got the chipped beef gravy and biscuits with a side of grits. Nothing was that great. The grits almost tasted like coconut milk and were bland. They had no butter, only spread (this right here was a bad sign, any restaurant that thinks margarine is butter is a huge NO in my book) the steak was fatty, the pancakes gritty, the chipped beef gravy had no flavor and resembled wall paper paste. We've never been here for dinner and I've heard their Peruvian chicken is good but based on this breakfast (a meal that is usually impossible to screw up) I'm not sure I'm up to trying this place again. Grill 309 and Flavor on Main are way better for breakfast. I'm giving them 2 stars instead of 1 because they were friendly.

The first time I came across them was during the Saturday morning Downtown Charlottesville City Market (pre-covid). I've also encountered them at Charlottesville Festival of Cultures (pre-covid) and most recently at the Autumn Nights Thursday Night Market (which ended in October *SAD*).  We ordered the pulled pork sandwich, lomo saltado and tried a few empanadas (the chicken empanada & the beef, egg & olive empanada. Amidst everything eaten, the pulled pork sandwich truly stole the show! The sandwich included a heap of Wandering River Farm pork shoulder with pickled red onions and jalapenos on a light, fluffy bun. The meat wasn't thinly pulled like I'be seen in many American based pulled pork sandwiches, but more broken into small, juicy tenderized bite size morsels, lathered in an amazing creamy spicy sauce and then piled on top of the buns - overflowing onto the platter with a side of fried sweet potatoes. The fried sweet potatoes were also pretty good - they kept their shape and were actually fried in thin circular slices. Unfortunately, by the time we demolished the pulled pork sandwiches, they had lost some of their fresh crunch and thus were a bit softer than expected, but nonetheless the fried sweet potatoes were a good side dish to the sandwich! The lomo saltado was stir fried beef tenderloin with onions and tomatoes, served with a side of papas fritas (hand cut potato fries) and white rice. This dish was prepared on the spot - cooked over an open stove and thus the flavors were super fresh and worth the wait~ The empanadas had thicker, doughier shells (which I really appreciated) and were filled to the brim with meat. Not super spicy but the sauces that came with them really gave the flavor an extra

The interior is definitely dingy, feels almost sketchy walking in. Chairs and table are cheap. They have freezers with ingredients in them accessible to patrons(which could be a health violation). But despite the lack of care put into the appearance of the restaurant, the food is quality and service is quick. 5-10 minutes for your meal to come out and I'm sure it's made pretty fresh. Fries are nothing special, might even be a frozen brand but who knows. Plantains are done so well here! They are cut into small slices so that there is more caramelization on each piece, which enhances the flavor so much. And of course, the chicken. Super juicy and flavorful. Much better than a cheap rotisserie chicken. You will tear through this thing in no time because of how good it is. I'd probably recommend getting the food to go so you can eat in a more comfortable environment. But believe me, Polla a La Brasa is some of the best bang for your buck you can get in Harrisonburg! I'm here almost every time I come down to visit.
