It's in a gas station parking lot attached to the Howard Johnson. Do not let that deter you, it was really solid pub food, definitely better and sustansibly more affordable than any pub I've eaten at in downtown Victoria. Clearly all of the other diners were locals, at 2pm on a Saturday. We sat in a cozy booth in the bar after being greeted by a very friendly bartender. We ordered two pints of Magners, the shepherd's pie with salad and the beef dip with frites. The shepherd's pie was beef, so technically a cottage pie, which I prefer. It came piping hot, with little scoops of mash on top and a dark colored gravy. Perfection, meaty, creamy, cheesy deliciousness. The salad was quite nice with field greens, cherry tomato halves, carrot, cucumber and green onion with housemade basalmic vinaigrette. The frites were of the super crispy possibly breaded variety, really excellent dipped in the au jus that came with the roast beef dip. I'd definitely come back on my next visit to get really good Irish pub grub without all the touristy prices.

The seafood chowder was also disappointing two people in our group had it, It had a strange flavor and wasn't something we enjoyed. Unfortunately, the fish and chips didn't make up for it. The batter was very greasy, and one piece of fish on each of our plates was mushy instead of flaky and fresh. There were four of us that got it. The coleslaw had no flavor as well. The tarter sauce was really good. Overall, the long wait, the unusual plate-sharing policy, the odd-tasting chowder, and the poor quality of the fish made for an underwhelming experience. We were expecting much better.

I sure don't know who the folks are that lavish praise here because our experience certainly fell short of those kudos. To be fair, the wait time was tolerable and service was ok. But that's where our kudos end. It all then comes down to the food offering! Everything starts with a cup of joe, and the beverage they served was bitter and terrible (hello, Starbucks). We then changed to decaf, and unfortunately that tasted of residual pot cleaner with a hint of some form of coffee. Egad. Aside from its mediocre taste, the main dish was also a disappointment: the so-called Traditional Benny with .95 cent shredded potato option. Found it difficult to cut then chew through the muffin base, and the few bacon hunks that were hiding just under the egg and hollandaise sauce were as tough as genuine shoe leather. To add 'insult to injury', the shredded potatoes lacked any sort of taste (other than chopped straw) -- typical of inexpensive (reheated) frozen side-foods. To top it all off, while paying the bill they scattered a few hunks of packaged bubble gum onto the table. Meh, that was barely edible too. I think we were at our table for maybe 1/2 hour and could hardly wait to leave. At $50+ for barely edible food, we can't see ourselves returning to five and dime.

The service was decent and the cocktails were tasty but the food was terrible. I had the Butternut Squash Ravioli in Brown Butter Sauce..... I know, it sounds tasty right? I was in awe of what was served me. It looked like a pile of condensed cream of mushroom soup and was burnt. I know that brown butter is halfway to burnt butter, but apparently the chef didn't know the difference. In addition to being burnt, the sauce had a strange consistency and had dried cranberries, walnuts and goat cheese... the whole thing was disjointed to say the least. We get out for a kid free meal only a couple of times a year and can't help feeling like this was a waste.

Soft, buttery - more or less what you're looking for in fish and chips. But they come in these perfectly shaped rectangular blocks that look like they've been pulled out of a box. You can tell they made it from real potatoes, but that's about it. Chowder - 4.5/5 Delicious! They give you a really small cup (my only gripe), but the chowder has lots of ingredients, is flavorful, and really quite tasty. Popcorn Shrimp - 4.5/5 Great popcorn shrimp. The place is small but has great views both inside dining and outside dining. Right on the water. Downtown Sidney. Work class view. The Cobb salad was ok: good taste but a relatively small serving with not a lot loaded on. For $24 one should get a fairly hefty salad. But heck, it was still good taste. The salad serving size is the only thing keeping it from being a 5. This is a great spot. Go!
