So we had a baby equipment delivery service/vendor lined up to have a far seat delivered to our hotel. Closer to our date, they informed me they were fully booked so that left us without any other option but to buy a car seat. I wasn't about to spend £££ on a luxury car seat (which is all we were finding in London) for one day use so I started googling and came across Argos. I browsed their site and saw the car seat that met our specifications which ended up being the same price as it would have been to rent from the vendor plus their delivery/pickup fees. We hate being THAT customer but we arrived 15 minutes before closing on the night before our planned day trip and we were able to purchase the car seat right then and there on their systems. Then walked a few steps over to their counter where they brought it over. We were in an out in 10 minutes. Service was fine although I realize a clueless customer rushing in so close to the end of your day might be slightly irritating. After use, we listed the car seat on Craigslist to anyone who wanted to pick up from us at our hotel lobby free of charge which worked out great since we didn't need to schlep the car seat to a local charity shop.

I'm obliged to have a fondness for this place... it saved my life, well... rather my film…read more It was a Sunday... it was our day of shooting. Days before, I'd spoken with my camera guy about how much tape we needed. "Do you think we need more than a couple hours of tape?" he asked. "Yes," I said. "Okay," he replied, "I'll be sure to get some." So there we were, on a Sunday afternoon on Kings Road in Chelsea, setting up the shot with all of our rental equipment, when the camera guy says to me, "uh... I need to go to a store somewhere and buy some more tape." "What?" I asked. "Yeah, I mean, if you think we'll need more than an hour of tape..." "Of course we need more than an hour! We'll need well more than an hour...." "Yeah, so, I need to go to a store and pick up some more tape..." I looked at him incredulously. "This is crazy... I have no idea where in the world you think you're going to find HD mini DV tapes anywhere near King's Road on a Sunday at 4:30 in the afternoon..." He looked up and down the street... then pointed to the Sony Centre, which was miraculousy a stone's throw away... as if it had materialized out of nowhere right then and there... I'd never even noticed it there before... "They might have some," he said. And what do you know? They did. We bought their last tapes. I consider myself indebted to Sony for even contemplating setting up such a shop on King's Road.... so here's a big public thank you to Sony for the shop's very existence in Chelsea... and another big thank you for keeping it open till 5pm on Sundays!

The Hi Fi Surplus Store also has great prices on DJ equipment, though some of it is not as refined as what you'd find at West End DJ nearby. There's always a friendly salesman on hand to answer any questions, and the better you are at bargaining yourself a good deal the easier it'll be on your pocket. A cool product I saw in particular was a huge 58" rear projection screen for a thousand quid: thoughts of Call of Duty 5 on Xbox Live and a hi-def DVD of "The Day The Earth Stood Still". Another interesting fact to note is that it is very difficult for most men to walk past this window without the glint of technology catching their eyes. Beware: you'll still find a lot of the items available in this store cheaper if you buy it online.

It's a medium sized store packed of electronic gadgets and one really needs to ask the staff to find out if they carry the product or not. I had to buy a socket converter so I could plug my recharger into the socket. I asked for a North American socket converter, and the staff at the counter immediately showed me the huge stack of it. He even let me test it out and it worked too. So, I decided to buy it and I gave him the money, but the staff at the counter forgot to put the socket converter in the bag, and foolishly, I left the store without the product. Oh, if you're wondering, I did come back to the store, and I got the socket converter back!
