Pho is the perfect food for a cool, drizzly afternoon. And 24 Train offers up a respectable version in a funky yet comfortable setting. What stood out for me were the noodles - they were very (pleasantly) firm when the bowl arrived at the table, and I enjoyed their texture at every stage as they gradually softened in the steaming broth. The broth itself was lightly flavourful, the accompanying bean sprouts and basil were fresh, and the thinly sliced beef was reasonably tender. I was in Vancouver for a few days and on a cold wet day noodle soup sounded delicious. This restaurant is warm and welcoming and nicely decorated. I was so happy to find on the menu that they had a chicken noodle dish and curry soup. I had had this at a Cambodian restaurant in Long Beach many years ago and had not seen it since. We were looking for a dinner spot that was walking distance from our hotel and wanted to try out the Vietnamese food scene in Vancouver. That's when I found 24 Train Express, which fit the bill. It has a mix of Vietnamese and Cambodian cuisine, the latter of which I haven't had a whole lot of experience with. To start, we had the cha gio. Since we just wanted to try it, we just got one roll and I'm glad because one roll here is actually the size of about 2.5 regular rolls. It was a little oily but well made with lots of filling, and it was crispy. For my main, I had the pho sate - specifically well-done beef with beef balls in a lemongrass broth. I really enjoyed it, even though it was well done beef (couldn't do rare since I'm pregnant) and I loved the broth. Hubby had the chicken thighs over "fried rice". I say "fried rice" because it was really just white rice with some sauce poured over it. The chicken was also dry, and it should be hard to overcook chicken thighs. But it didn't taste fresh. It tasted like they reheated it. He said the veggies it came with were also not fresh. Maybe he just ordered the wrong thing since this is a Noodle House, after all. I would still give this place four stars, based off my meal and the cha gio. There were other menu items I would have liked to try if I had the stomach space. But it seems like the more popular options here are the noodles. read more

I was deciding between the Beef Stew or the Beef Curry. I decided on the Curry because I was craving that thick, rich, creamy aromatic texture that is known with Curry. On the contrary a stew is known to be more watery, right? Well....the Curry was exactly what I would expect a Stew to be. Watery with potatoes....hmmmm? (see pic.) Also, the chunks of beef had excess fat that hadn't been trimmed. I doubt many people enjoy big lumps of cow fat in their mouths. Maybe trim those? The spices were nice and steamed rice tasted....well like rice that's been steamed. The Prawn Skewer was a bit disappointing. It wasn't grilled it was pan fried....big difference, and for the price the prawns were tiny and what it seemed was they tried to make up for it with veggies (see pic.) Yeah...not really feeling any particular way about this experience, which I guess kinda says it all. read more

Excellent vermicelli with shrimp and spring rolls. Service was good and tables were cozy.

The first time I was here was 2020 during the covid lockdown. My roommate and I got takeout, and I don't even remember exactly what I ordered but I remember liking it. I was nearby recently and needed dinner so I thought I'd try visiting them again, this time to dine in. I got the veggies and tofu curry on rice. Very good comfort food, flavourful but not overwhelmingly hot, and not oily, making it easy on the palate and the stomach. The portion size was perfect, with a good serving of tofu and lots of vegetables both in the curry and in the salad. I also had the "3 kinds of bean w/ coconut milk and ice". It's under the "drinks" section of the menu but theirs was more of a frozen dessert than a drink since the ice was a little coarse to drink through a straw. It was tasty though, with lots of the toppings. The beans were very filling. They were fairly busy but the food came out pretty quickly. The service here was a step above the hands-off service style that's typical of pho joints. The waitress checked in on me after I got my food to make sure everything was okay, and the whole staff team was really sweet. I think the decoration in the restaurant is fun, it's a little eclectic but not "loud". I would recommend this place over most other "express" Vietnamese restaurants for the experience all-around. read more

I came here to try their veggie pho and saw that they had a satay coconut version ($15 plus tax; regular veggie pho is $14 plus tax) that's made with peanut butter and coconut milk. My soup came out in about 5 minutes. The portion was solid, with plenty of veggies (broccoli, green cabbage, a few slices of carrots, onions), some triangularly cut firm tofu, and a decent portion of noodles. The broth is what makes or breaks a pho, and this was a nicely spiced, rich satay broth. It was on the sweeter side for a satay pho, which could've been dialed down a bit, but was very flavourful and satisfying nonetheless. Friendly, competent service, and a pleasant enough environment. Worth trying out if you're in this part of downtown. read more

This place gave me mom-and-pop vibes :) I was in LOVE with my grilled pork vermicelli bowl! Here's what I liked about it: 1) for $12CAD, this is a plentiful amount. This place has been around for a while but I tend to shy away from places that don't have a website/menu readily available. After a bunch of googling, I decided to try their peanut satay pho. This place is tucked between busy Granville St. and on the brink of Yaletown. I ordered take out and by the time I walked home, it was still hot. HUGE portions full of veg, noodles, and a spicy peanut broth. It was delicious and very comforting. Tons of flavors and the broth was excellent. I will definately try this place again! read more

I don't know why all the comments for this place are so old, so I though I would just post a recent review. I had the large Chicken Pho and it was delicious. The extra large looked enormous. The only reason I didn't give this place 5 stars was that it was a bit crowded and the interior could use a bit of an update. This place is nearby but I never go here since I usually go to the pho place at Robson or across t&t. Met one of the kid's friends family who trek all the way from Tinseltown to here despite the rain. They told me they go here just for the satay soup pho and eggroll and I'm so glad I met them cause let me tell you, their satay pho is the best. We go here instead of other places now and usually get the satay soup pho, normal pho and the eggroll. Flavor is stronger and they give way more meats in their pho compared to other pho place downtown. Eggroll is super crispy ( and oily but I just press them in napkin before eating) and one of my favorite now. Stuffed chicken wing a bit of a disappointment so won't get it again next time but I have good expectations of their other dishes. For now though, my usual is good enough for me :). read more

I have no idea what this place is actually called. The name on their main door doesn't match their window which doesn't match their sandwich board which is different from their menu and not the same as their chopsticks. Anyway you can find this place just off the Granville strip and down the street from the Penthouse. Was here for lunch yesterday and ordered the grilled beef, spring roll, and marinated pork with vermicelli. It all tasted delicious, every last bit of it. There's not too many South East Asian cuisine in this general area so it's definitely recommended by me. Only downside is that it seems very stuffy and warm inside. They do have outdoor seating but the tables weren't clean when I got there and there was a little piece of broccoli on my tea cup. So 4 stars overall. read more

I was looking for decent pho in the downtown core and this did the trick. I love that they still use some of the decorations from the old burger joint, and that they put up a bunch of neon signs (you aren't a legit pho place if you aren't rocking some neon signs). The service is pretty decent - my spring rolls took a long time to come - we were half-way through our noodles by the time they arrived. The pho is good, the broth has a good flavour without looking murky. The satay soup noodles are pretty spicy! My mouth was on fire but it was delicious regardless. I think they went a bit light on the tripe. The prices are decent for noodles (maybe a dollar more than what you'd find outside of downtown), but the spring rolls I felt were a bit pricy for their quality. The place had a decent flow of people while we were there, several getting take-out and we even bumped into some friends there! I'd certainly come back if I have another pho craving. This little diner is supposed to serve Vietnamese and Cambodian (khmer) cuisine. Having just travelled Cambodia and Vietnam extensively - I'm guessing this is run by Vietnamese folks who lived in Phnom Penh for a bit and decided to put a couple of Vietnamese interpretations of Cambodian food on the menu. Amok is a classic khmer dish but the people here have no idea what it is. And the Cambodian dishes are super spicy - which is nothing like in Cambodia. Overall the food was pretty decent but definitely in that average range for this type of cuisine and price. I'm hoping they bring up their game because I'd love to have a close place to go a get some decently priced authentic food. BTW, the last 2 places in this location went bankrupt in the past 3 years so we'll see how it goes.. read more

I am giving this restaurant 3.5 stars which in my opinion means good nothing spectacular I did habe a negative experience here with the staff. This place is very close to my work so I usually come here for late night pho before a shift. They close at 11 and one night I came here at 10 and they basically told me to leave. They said were closing soon. An HOUR early ??? That is a joke. Anyways I stopped comming here for a while but today was craving pho so I came. All I've ever ordered here is rice noodle soup so I can't really offer a review on the meat which is very important to me at pho places however next time I come I will. I can say that I LOVE there spring rolls. They are rich, crispy and the meat inside them seems clean nd cooked well so next time I am going to try there beef ball noodle soup. CHECK YOUR CHANGE. THEY SHORT CHANGE EVERY SINGLE TIME! Cash only place. No jokes. I've been to 24 Train Express a few times because its close to my work place. First two times, I ordered noodles and noticed that they shorted me a dollar or so. Last week, I visited this place again and ordered a small bowl of noodles at $7 ($7.35 with tax). I gave a $10 bill and was given $1.10 change back.......AGAIN. I had enough of being short changed and went in to ask the male cashier to do his math again. I asked him how much the noodle was...he said $7.35 and had him confirm I paid $10 and that he gave me $1.10 in change. He repeated that 4 times and still insisted I was the crazy one. I gave up finally after the fifth time when I realized I had to return to work. I basically paid $10 for a small bowl of $7 mediocre viet noodles. I would have gladly tipped the amount, but something about being short changed makes it seem very unjust. read more

It's such a great feeling to be able to crawl out of bed and walk across the street for a mad pho craving! The pho is decent...more of a gingery taste than most pho broth but still good. And you can't go wrong with the spring rolls. Not overly greasy and fried crispy right. As with most fine Asian establishments, it's cash only! I found this out the hard way and even though I was a few quarters short of my bill they told me not to worry about it. Great service and with a smile, too! read more

Disappointing :( I had the brisket and beef balls pho and the soup was so salty that it was inedible. I'm not sure if it was because we came here at 10:30pm (30 mins before they closed) and the soup has been steeping all day or I caught the bottom of the barrel... but I made it through maybe half of it before I gave up, downed a glass of water and went to another place to satisfy our hunger. read more

I'm giving three stars for the pho and one extra star for the fact that this place is: - the only decent cheap pho option in the culinarily clueless cesspool that is Yaletown - basically across the street from my apartment, which means that I can fall out of my building with a hangover and land in pho. The prices are good ($7-10) depending on the size, the portions are pretty generous, and they never try to charge me when I ask for extra beef balls because I'm a pig. The broth is pretty bland but beggars can't be choosers in Yaletown. I've gotten pho to go three times from here and, while it's nothing to rave about, it certainly isn't anything to complain about, either. And bless 24 Train simply for taking over the space previously occupied by the inexplicably creepy Ace Burger Bar. What was up with that place? Service is perfunctory/efficient, but friendly. We come here based on convenience. The beef pho broth is too sweet and the beef stew even sweeter. Broth lacks depth of flavor vs other pho places. Skimpy on the meat all round (soups, salad rolls, wontons...). Staff are nice though! I like their patio in the Summer. read more

Pretty decent pho. Came here for lunch and you have 3 options for pho - M, L or XL. Large was approx $8.75. I had the one with everything in it. The tripe was nicely slice into thin strips. The tendon was nice and soft. The broth and noodles were decent too. So far, best place in downtown. Only thing you need to watch out for - a cash only establishment. read more

Went there for a quick lunch and not sure how busy they'd be at 1:00. It was packed and I changed my mind about getting a table and took my pho to go. I asked what was on the vegetarian pho and it was pretty basic so I opted for the seafood. I got my order within 10 mins. I'll say the soup was not very tasty but I was pleasantly surprises with the toppings. They even had assorted veg on it. I really wanted to like 24 Train Express since it was so close to my office, but I was so disappointed with my #5 Pho (the norm - rare beef & beef ball) selection. Let me start by saying that I'm not a big meat eater. When I get any size pho I would always give away some of my meat to whomever I'm with. So given that said, I'm actually usually pretty lenient with places that don't give as much meat as the usual pho restaurants on Kingsway. But 24 Train Express really tops any place I've been to in the amount of meat you're given in a bowl of pho. I got exactly 5 pieces of rare beef and 5 pieces of beef ball in a Large pho. Halfway done my noodles the meat was already all gone. Also, I noticed that the soup for the pho was very very clear, which indicated to me that it wasn't the beef bone stock soup that usually takes hours to make being used for their pho. Although this may be the closest pho restaurant to my office, I think i'll still rather trek up to Joyeaux Cafe & Restaurant near Pacific Centre for my pho cravings next time. read more

Just after sushi, I feel that pho can be found on every street in Vancouver. Rarely do you have to try hard to find a Pho place. This one is an interesting choice as this is a Cambodian/Vietnamese pho place, so you get a couple changes on the regular pho menu. I frequent this place mainly as it is just steps away from my sister's and well, when you want a cheap meal it's either pho or sushi. Came here on a Monday tuesday afternoon with my family for a late lunch. We ordered the pho ga, the satay pho with beef balls and rare beef and one of the rice noodle bowls (marinated pork, grilled beef and a spring roll). This place is quick and cheap and the food more or less reflects that. The broth is flavourful but it's not the best pho I've had. The satay flavouring adds a nice touch, and something that i like that this place does that not too many pho places do is they add some fried onions to the broth. Portion size is varied (three sizes) and the overall meat to noodle to broth ratio is generous i feel. The pho ga is good...again, not the most flavourful but not disappointing either. Word of note: My mom fell after one of the chair legs snapped. They comp'd the meal for us which was nice of them but careful. Rarity that this would happen but still, just be mindful! read more
