They came to do the roof inspection when we were purchasing a new home, and they found numerous issues with the shingle roof, roof deck, gutter, etc. They were all fixed by Capitol Roofing within a few short weeks of request and signing repair request. They delivered as promised, as well as a few other things my insurance inspector requested. I cannot be more happy with their work. Most homeowners under-appreciate how critical the roof's function is, it literally is a shield that protects all of your belongings from getting wet and grow mold. While he initially came across as genuine, personable, and competitively priced, his lack of competence, integrity, and professionalism surfaced almost immediately. In reality, Joseph operates as a solo middleman who subs out the entire job to third-party crews. --- Upcharges & Shady Payment Requests --- The problems started on day one of demo. Even though the roof was only a single layer of shingles, the tear-off took a few extra hours due to adhesive on the substrate--something he had the opportunity to inspect beforehand. Rather than owning field conditions, he dumped the extra cost on me. When I tried to meet him halfway and split the difference, he threw a fit and refused. On top of that, he pleaded with me to pay his demo sub directly in cash to "help him out." In hindsight, having the homeowner pay his sub directly was a massive red flag regarding his cash flow and business practices. --- Fighting the Contract & Playing the Martyr --- Joseph fought me on clear terms throughout the build and resented basic accountability: Fascia Boards: The contract explicitly stated replacement fascia boards would be primed, but he pushed back with heavy resistance and grumbling when asked to do it. Quality Control: When his crew installed a visibly cracked fascia board, asking him to replace it was treated like an impossible chore. Basic Code Compliance as "Favors": Whenever he was caught missing something standard--like the low pitch of my roof actually requiring two layers of underlayment felt instead of one by code--he acted like fixing his own oversight was doing me the biggest personal favor in the world. Ego Over Accountability: Any time I held him to the contract or questioned his workmanship, his go-to condescending response was: "Are you the roofer or am I the roofer? Who has 30 years of roofing experience?" --- Scare Tactics to Dodge Inspections --- For an attached carport flat roof replacement, he used scare tactics to talk me out of calling for a final city inspection. He claimed the carport might not be permitted and warned it could lead to fines or being forced to tear it down--an obvious attempt to prevent an inspector from checking his work. --- Leaks, Excuses, & Cut Corners --- The ULTIMATE failure was that the brand-new roof leaked around a replaced skylight, damaging the drywall on my ceiling. Dealing with him on warranty repairs was a nightmare: Laughable Excuses: Instead of properly inspecting the flashing, he made absurd claims like "dirt and dust can make a roof leak", blamed mystery people walking on the roof and the directional wind of recent rain events. (laughing out loud as I write this) Band-Aid "Fixes": He insisted the installation was fine and tried to just smear a bead of caulk on top of the shingles. Anyone knows exposed surface caulk is a lazy band-aid, not a watertight repair the solves the underlying issues of a poor install. Evading Responsibility: He actually tried to bargain his way out of repairs, asking: "If I fix the skylight, will you take care of the drywall damage inside?" Shorting Materials: After I refused his surface caulk fix, he finally brought a roofer back out to pull up the shingles and fix the flashing underneath. Talking directly with the crew made it clear what happened: Joseph had shorted them on materials from the start to pad his own profits. --- WARNING --- Do not fall for the friendly sales pitch or the low bid (not that he was a screaming deal). Working with Joseph was an emotional rollercoaster and brought nothing but ongoing stress for me, my wife, and young children. Joseph brought constant pushback on contract terms, cut corners on scope, treated basic compliance like charity, and took zero ownership when his work failed. "10" Supervisor: Don, he was at the job at all times and a very hard worker: "10" * Tear Off Company: 1) Didn't have tarps that didn't look tired, Swiss cheese, so many holes and couldn't protect our lawn , planters very well. 2) Our sweet Missy stepped on something that didn't get picked up, we're still finding tacks or roof nails with orange discs.pictures $380.00 vet bill antibiotics, anti-inflammatory, PN meds, antibiotic soak. Labs, recheck. Very elevated white blood count. Missy is better now. 3) The tear off guys were brutal.! Picture to show the damage to the inside of the master bathroom. * Accidents happen and we understand that, have tarps that are without holes for tear off.!! The nails that show were not siliconed, Deans son came out and covered them. Thank you! That should have been caught by Don, not my husband. Roof : Charcoal mat with black metal trim. Work "10/10" Dean arrived to make sure everything was going as planned. Dean Pulled permits with the city of GLENDORA. The inspector came out and told the guys great job. Keep it up. We had one layer of shingles and some wood that needed to be replaced on the garage and some facia needed to be replaced. Everything was taken care of in a timely manner. "10" A new roof is very messy but at the end of the day, you never knew they were here. The place was clean and neat and at the end of the day they use a metal rolling magnet to pick up nails amazing. We appreciate the metal magnet and the mop magnet because we have four dogs that are our world. They tried to cover our plants, our bushes they even covered my herb garden, which I appreciated so very much! We had six companies come and give us bids. It was a nightmare until Rexway roofing owner Dean Martin came to give us a bid. that's when we knew we were in great hands and boy did we feel the weight lifted off our shoulders! From the estimate to the roof replacement completion, they demonstrated that they are responsible and reliable. They do what they say! In October 2024, I got estimates from 4 different roofers, Jeff who is the owner of Always Reliable Roofing came. He climbed the roof, climbed the attic, and in less than 30 min, he found things the other roofers did not find. He demonstrated he is well experienced in assessing the roof and was transparent with us on any issues going into the roof replacement. I know my dad and I have a lot of questions and he was patient to answer them all. We also appreciate that he gave us a price estimate without any of the games that others played. In January 2025, we got the money to move forward with the roof replacement. We met Jeff again to pay the deposit, sign the contract, and select the roof color. Jeff got to work immediately by getting the permit from the city. He let us know there was about a 4 to 6 week wait due to other projects ahead of us and the weather forecast. I appreciate that they only start the roof replacement if the weather is rain free for the projected time period needed. While we waited, we had a concern about a rain storm and whether the old roof would hold. I called them and Jeff's wife, Karyna, was very attentive to my questions and concerns. Jeff came to check the roof for water tightness and he would cover the roof if needed. This was greatly appreciated by my dad and myself because it helped us rest assured that they took care of the roof even before the replacement started. Late Feb 2025, Jeff gave us about half week notice that our roof replacement would start. Our roof replacement took place on Monday to Saturday. The team that worked on the roof were supervised by Jeff's son Justin. It started with removal of the old roof. Then Justin met with the city inspector, which passed. Next the team proceeded to add the new roof. Lastly, there was one more inspection which also passed. The ultimate test, is inevitably when something unplanned happens during construction. During the process, Justin and Jeff continued to answer and questions or concerns we had. We greatly appreciated that they were so responsive throughout the whole process. We were surprised how much wood was left in the attic during the roof removal. They don't clean the attic, but they made sure to clean it enough so that the pipes stand straight through the roof. At the end, we noticed a pipe didn't have a cap, and Jeff added a cap right away. And they let us know right away when they discovered some wood that was damaged and would cost a bit more to get replaced. Justin explained the options to us and I felt we made an informed decision and the additional fee was appropriate based on market price for wood. My dad and I are very happy with the service from this family business. Every step of the way, they demonstrated that they are responsible and reliable. Everyday his people cleaned up and left the job pristine every evening. We worked with our neighbors and he completed everything. The actual work seems good, however it's hard to objectively say this improved my roof since this was a smaller repair job, not a full roof replacement. Follow up photos from completed work definitely show me that this is an honest business. I am docking 1 star because I found multiple nails scattered in my driveway once the job was completed. If I was not vigilant in checking for this, I'd very likely have popped tires eventually. Site clean up and cleanliness is just as important as the actual work. Docking another star because I was also not informed that the burning smell from the torching would be so strong inside my home. I would have much preferred to step out while the work was completed if I knew how bad this would be. Unbearably strong chemical smell, had to run the a/c and indoor fans for the rest of the afternoon to clear it out. Overall, the work seems great, but there are logistics issues that could use improvements. Edit: Shawn stopped by to personally apologize for the job mistakes the day after completion. He's an honest businessman, and I'm glad to see this type of practice and customer service. He truly cares about the customer and the quality of the work.
