I had (a) one 40 feet sugar maple tree that had split, due to a bug infested trunk. One half was on on the ground; (b) a pine tree that was about 60 feet tall, 3/4 dead from the top and leaning dangerous toward the neighbor's house; (c) a 25 feet tall magnolia tree that had grown too big. I wanted the maple to cut manageable size 16/18-inch for firewood, grind the trunks, and clean up the mess. I got four quotes from tree service providers: (Provider A) A few months ago, the neighbor across the street had three 35-feet oak trees taken down. The trunks were left near ground level. The rounds were cut 16-18 inch and left behind. I asked her for information on the service provider and how much it cost her to be used as my baseline. I contacted her tree service provider and received a quote. Talk about taking advantage and ripping people off, the quote was sky-high. (Provider B's) I found two (2) tree service providers recommended by neighbors on Nextdoor social media. I contacted them for quotes. One (B1) declined, stating that my property was too far. Google map showed that it's less than 25 miles. The other service provider (B2) provided a quote for the maple tree (no stump grinding) - more than half of what I ended up paying for the whole job. They also said, if I would provide them with lowest quote from another company, they would beat it by 5%. I would never do that, so I dropped them. (Provider C) I contacted a tree service provider from a business card left in the mailbox. He wanted me to be present when he looked at the job and quoted. Other service providers didn't have any issue with my being presence. Frustrated, I searched the web and found recommendations on Yelp. I am extremely glad that I did. (Provider D) This company, 23 Trees, has great reviews on multiple sites (Yelp, Angi, Home Advisor, Best Pro in Town, Birdeye, Networx, Thumbtack). I contacted them got an awesome quote from this insured and bonded company (according to their paperwork). The awesome result and my thoughts on this experience: (a) Recommendations on Nextdoor could have come from family, friends or self-promotion scamming posts - can't trust them. (b) Provider A and B2 quotes were sky high; leaving a lot of room for inquiring mind to wonder - why? Taking advantage of seniors like me? (c) OMG, provider D - 23 Trees did a fantastic job. Everything was done according to the statement of work and beyond expectations. They neatly stacked the logs. As a matter of facts, they went beyond requirements. They quoted with the logs left in rounds. It was my fault for not reading the quote carefully; but after I called, they came back to cut the large rounds to manageable size (see images), no additional charge. They are the first and only small business company that receives my rare shout out respect for professionalism and quality work one.
