My girlfriend and I frequent the 1901 often, and we love the ambiance and high queasily food. Chef Steve is an artist, and we LOVE his ever changing specials. Sam is charismatic and funny, a host that will brighten anyone's evening. We refer people ALL the time to this as we are locals and support solid local businesses. My (soon-to-be) husband and I chose Heritage Square as our wedding venue which meant we ended up at the 1901 Speakeasy. I've been here a handful of time now and I've yet to have a drink I don't like. The head bartender, Jared, clearly puts his heart and soul into his drinks. With his infused liquors and crafty touch, each cocktail is unique and incredibly tasty. I've tried multiple different drinks here and each has been delicious. Beyond the yummy drinks, the speakeasy ambiance is dark and romantic. With a fireplace and lanterns on each table, it creates a sultry vibe. They also have an array of live music that covers local artists for every taste. I'll definitely be coming back here! Great service. Friendly bartenders. Good atmosphere if you like smaller cozy like basement with an elegant touch. They have a good list of bar bites. But I don't recommend the calamari. I also didn't care much for the margaritas. We tried two kinds of tequila. But it still didn't taste good. As constructive criticism goes. Please change the margarita mixture or maybe I'm just too picky. Seems like most people were drinking beer or wine. So that's probably a good choice. read more

1901 is by far my favorite bar in the Oxnard/Ventura area! Great beer and an awesome place to spend a Saturday night!

I really wanted to love this place. I'm a cocktail enthusiast and was very excited to discover this new bar. I was a little thrown by the name since speakeasies were not a thing in 1901, but I figured I ask when I got there, clearly there had to be a reason. There was. The place is named after the history of the building it's in, which has a significant date in 1901, and this information is displayed on the wall in a way that lets you know the owners understand why the question would be asked. The exterior of the place is nothing like a speakeasy, in that the door is brightly lit and calls your attention, but it's pretty. (The bar is in the lower level of a nice building that houses an Italian restaurant, which I had planned on going to for food after a few drinks. Spoiler- I never went.) The speakeasy is decorated well. The designer knew the genre and put a lot of effort into it. This is why I've given it 2 stars, instead of 1. Also, the bartender was really nice. However, the cocktails were atrocious. It was such a disappointment. The menu looks wonderful, the drink ideas and flavor combinations are spot on, but the bartender simply didn't know how to make them properly. I feel terrible saying this because he was so nice, but if your going to claim to be a mixologist and run a speakeasy, you need to know how to make cocktails and he just didn't. There was an obvious reason though. I ordered a total of 3 drinks so I could taste them all and watch him make them: one from the specials of the house and two right off the classics menu. The bartender didn't measure anything. It was like watching a train wreck, hoping for that one in a million chance that he was so good at his job that he was consistent every time and could do it with his eyes closed. (I've never met a bartender that could do that with cocktails). The proportions were all off and the drinks were shit. The mint wasn't muddled properly and the lime wedges were afterthoughts. The glasses that the drinks were put in were not the correct ones for the drinks to be served in for the type of drink (yes, it matters because it changes the flavor if a mule is served in glass rather than a copper cup). Even some basics of ice were not followed. Old fashions are not served with a glass of crushed ice for instance. I couldn't take more than 3 drinks of any of the things I ordered. I kept trying with a new drink, but in the end they were all bad. The people there seemed to be enjoying themselves though. They weren't what I would call the normal cocktail crowd, but seemed more like beer and wine drinkers who were drinking cocktails and had no idea what the drinks were supposed to be like. There was live music, which was nice, but it wasn't speakeasy music, so be prepared that you might be listening to country or classic rock or something. Fun, but not what I was expecting. If you want a nice ambiance to sit around with some people, have fun here, but don't expect it to be a speakeasy or serve real cocktails. Also, the alcohols were not that impressive in terms of top shelf stuff. The best bottles they had on the shelves were mediocre above average varieties. Making cocktails is a science, not an art. read more
