a bar with a red counter

I was skeptical coming here , didnt know what to expect. It was quiet with with my gf got there early watched the nfc championship. There was a band there and a little bit of sketchy individuals. The price on the booze and the nachos I got were pricey. They were ok the nachos , I would probably just come here for pool and some drinks. Not the food , there's a lot of pool tables ,arcade games, and other games to play. The bartender was nice , we played pool that was fun. I was kind of bothered I was trying to get a yelp coupon redeemed for pool 10 bucks for 2 hours. The bar tender got the manager or owner to talk to me , the man said that he couldn't accept it they wanted to get off yelp a while ago , he said it was a covid discount , during covid. He sounded faded and finally he granted me the check in coupon from yelp but added 2 more dollars. Then he was messing around giving me a hard time for being a yelper. I mean I would of gave it higher review but that owner or guy was kind of ghetto.

Ahhhh, I'm not sure how I am supposed to review this place. Part of me wants to rate it a full 5 star but the other part wants me to rate it a 1-2 star. Note: unlike my other reviews, I am reviewing this place only after one visit but that's because I don't live in the area so this was a one time visit for me.....and so starts my rant: Starting with the Good, the great, and the magnificent. Very large location with ample room for people to mingle so this is definitely a location for even large groups to come hang out and enjoy. Music options could be a Yay or nay, depending on who you are but I'm pretty sure I saw a jukebox so you can play the music you like if you wanted. Music selection options are unknown but I would assume your favorite music will be available as well. The staff working here are extremely friendly and welcome myself and my friend, though complete strangers to the area as if we were regulars so that was very inviting. Beer/ale selection was okay. I don't drink and my friend is a Whiskey drinker so no Whiskey but he was able to find something he liked so that's a plus. There are many pool tables to play with, and different sizes so whether you want to play on the standard size or smaller size, you have the option. Lots of TV's so I would assume this would be a great place for when a game is on or other televised events. Hell, they even have some arcade games if you get bored of shooting because you can't shoot and others keep beating you. LOL. Price (for the table) is one of the best I've seen, especially the deal you get when you check-in via Yelp (this is as of November 2019). I checked in but I didn't get the deal because I totally forgot to show at the time of purchase. Well, I didn't pay, my friend did, and I was having a good time chatting with the bartender so that made me forget. But you know what? Even if I did get the discount, I probably would have paid the same amount and just applied it to the tip instead because of how much I did enjoy this location the day I visited. After reading the above, one would imagine "Well then, why the hell would you consider rating this place no less than a 5 star?" Well.... This... and this really applies to those who are looking for what I consider to be a proper pool hall. Though I've been shooting pool for well over 15 years now, it's always been just for fun but I've also come to appreciate the sport and know when a location is more a pool hall or more a fun bar and entertainment location. Corner Pocket Billiards being the latter. The things I'm about to point out will be things that someone who regularly shoots pool will understand but for the average person, probably won't care about. The tables are not maintained well and very dirty. Part of the reason is they use the red chalk (and for those who want to know, most cheap chalks produce a lot of dust which gets on the table and if you don't clean the tables often, it gets really dirty really quickly. Even the chalk from more recognized brands like Masters will dust (in all colors minus blue and grey that I found) so I usually prefer Master's blue chalk because of that. Blah blah blah.. yes i know) The rails are spongy soft or bumpy - annoyed the crap out of me when trying to bank shots. Dirty table + dusty chalk, you can guess that the cue stick was pretty dirty too. Not sure how often they wipe those down. I had to get a damp paper towel and wipe the stick i was using down for a couple of minutes before I felt comfortable I wasn't about to catch some disease (i'm a bit of an obsessive-compulsive person). You will only see 20oz and 21 oz sticks, some sticks were missing the tip, most didn't have a bumper and the first stick that I picked up had a bent screw that had a sharp edge that got caught on my shirt and almost ripped while i was cleaning it. The balls are very dirty and the cueball looks like it has pink eye. Some of the tables are not level so it was annoying to have my balls roll in directions I didn't want it to go. I think that about sums up my cons for this place. Judging from my complaints, any seasoned pool player would laugh at me and care less about most of the stuff I said minus maybe the cleanliness of the table as they can usually adapt to any situation and still kick butt and win. So yeah, even after 15 years, I still suck at shooting but I enjoy the game. Would I come back if and when I was in the area? Sure! But I may ask to borrow some of their cleaning supplies and clean the table prior to use or bring my own if they allow. LOL. Yes, it bothered me that much.

Ok place to play some pool. Price per the hour is great, that's my favorite thing. Cheapest place I've been to for pool so far. The reason is probably because of the mostly beat-up (some crooked & some broken) pool sticks, and no AC (it felt extremely stuffy). I went at night when it had already freshened outside from a really hot day (it was in the 80sF that day), but the inside had not cooled down at all yet so I can only imagine how hot it was in there during the day. Only played two games and I had to get out of there. Nonetheless, I will stop by again to play pool when I am in the area, unless it's a hot day, or hopefully they have AC by then.

First time coming here and I loved it! This place has it all: An amazing vibe, cold drinks, great music, food options, easy parking, and stays open late! The bartender welcomed my girlfriend and I with a smile and immediate service. Will definitely be back at this place soon!

$7 michelada. It was really yummy!

It's a decent place to go. They need to upgrade the pool tables and invest in new pool sticks though.

The cocktails change so it's always fun to come back! I always try to be there when this section opens. If you're going to hang your hat on the speakeasy aesthetic--dim lights, hushed tones, whispers of…read moreexclusivity--then understand this: you're entering into an unspoken pact with your patrons. We expect a certain standard, a level of care that borders on obsession. So when I catch Evan Williams--respectable, questionable, but barely twelve bucks a bottle--making an appearance behind the bar, it feels like a breach of trust. A quiet betrayal under low lighting. The illusion only works if the details hold up under scrutiny... and that pour? It broke the spell. And then comes the real offense: discovering that your Old Fashioned--the crown jewel of any respectable cocktail program--are built on bottom-shelf, dust-collecting bourbon. That's not just a letdown, it's a slap in the face. A cocktail like that deserves reverence, not shortcuts. And as if to twist the knife, there it was--a massive can of red maraschino cherries sitting shamelessly atop the bar, like some relic from a dive that's given up on finesse. It wasn't just a misstep. It was disrespect. In a place claiming the speakeasy mantle, details like these matter. They're the difference between theater and parody. The cocktails did not warrant the $15 price tag. Moreover, I would have paid more had I know the class of bourbon upfront. What ultimately redeems the space is its ambiance. The low flicker of the fireplace, the soft embrace of worn leather sofas, the curated hum of music floating just above conversation--it's seductive, even soulful. The room itself is small, intimate--the kind of place where you're bound to recognize a face, or at the very least, feel inclined to invite a stranger to share the sofa and maybe a story. And then there's the setting--tucked beneath a historic relic, a basement bar built into the bones of old Americana. The building dates back to the early 1900s, echoing with a past that deserves to be honored, not phoned in. That's exactly why I expected more from the cocktails. A place with this much atmosphere shouldn't fall flat when it comes to what's in the glass. It's a mismatch--a beautiful stage, but a script that doesn't quite rise to meet it.

We were there a bit early so we needed to wait 15 or so minutes for it to open per the time listed here on Yelp. We hung out on the sidewalk counting the seconds until noon, only to be disappointed as we walked by and saw a sign in the door that said 1pm. We continued on our way and went to another local bar only to return hours later via car because I had had my exercise for the day. We got lucky in finding a parking spot because this is a small area, so cross your fingers. We found 2 seats at the bar and marvelled at the selection of microbrews. For a Saturday afternoon, the place slowly filled up with locals as everyone watched the basketball finals on the tvs. Bartender was very welcoming as were the locals we chatted with. I'm not much of a beer drinker, but did find something to drink. My partner was in heaven sampling and trying new brews. Would love to return later in the evening to see how this place fills up and to enjoy more of the locals and what it would be like living in this hidden community. So shhhh! Last December, a friend came across The Cave while looking for a place to have lunch in Ventura and…read moresuggested we give it a try. I'm really glad he did because it's the kind of place I probably wouldn't have found on my own. The first thing that caught our attention was the self-serve wine dispensers lined with bottles ready to sample. We had a lot of fun walking back and forth, looking over the different selections, and deciding what to taste next. Being able to sample wines by the ounce before committing to a full glass made the whole experience feel interactive. I especially liked that I could compare different Cabernet Sauvignons side by side, which isn't something you get to do very often. After trying a few different Cabernets, Chimney Rock ended up being my favorite. The dining room added to the experience. The cave-like ceilings, warm lighting, and comfortably spaced tables made it easy to settle in, enjoy our lunch, and catch up without feeling cramped or rushed. If you enjoy trying different wines, it's easy to lose track of time here. We started with a cheese plate, which turned out to be much more generous than I expected. It came with a nice assortment of cheeses, crisp apple slices, grapes, candied walnuts, crostini, and a savory relish on the side. It was a great dish to share with our wine. My friend ordered the tuna poke tower, and we shared the cheese flatbread and sweet potato fries. I went with the Original Cave Salad with salmon, which came with a generous piece of perfectly cooked salmon over fresh greens, apples, grapes, walnuts, and blue cheese. Everything tasted fresh, and the portions were generous enough that we left completely satisfied. One thing I appreciated was that we never felt rushed. Lunch naturally turned into an afternoon of catching up, comparing notes on the different wines, and deciding which pours we wanted to try next. Before we left, we wandered through the wine shop one more time. If you discover a favorite during lunch, you can pick up a bottle before heading home, which is a nice touch. I'm really glad my friend found this place. The next time I'm in Ventura, it'll definitely be on my list again.

The day before, the owner Michele couldn't seem to find the paperwork where we discussed menu, family style, decor, budget etc. Thankfully, we went in the day before to double check everything. Not only were we met with a misogynistic retort to everything we talked about but he did not clarify any details that we later found out would be important. The day of the event, we accidentally hit a bottle of wine bringing in the decorations. Total accident! During the party, we had to constantly find our server (super nice guy but terrible service) to take drink orders, to take food orders, and to clear the table and bring to go boxes. Drinks weren't refilled. We cut and served the cake we brought. Then our bill comes and surprising to us, we were charged a room fee (which I confirmed they DID NOT have prior to booking), charged a cake fee (just for them to store it in their fridge and NEVER told there would be a fee for bringing a dessert, despite Michele asking the day before if we were bringing our own or using them for dessert), and he charged us $50 for the bottle we accidentally broke. With all these extra charges, in addition to already paying a deposit, we were way over the previously discussed budget. I never would have agreed to his idea of everyone ordering individual dishes instead of family style plus his outrageous extra fees had I know it was going to blow the budget. He had every opportunity to tell us there is a cake fee (never have I EVER had to pay a fee to bring a cake- even our server said he felt it was in poor taste to charge us for that). We refused to pay the room fee because we already put down a deposit and were never told there would be these extraneous charges! The terrible ending happened when I slipped and fell (8 months pregnant) in the front of the restaurant RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE OWNER, who stood over me as I was on the ground, and said "you must have slipped on the wine you spilled." Never offered concern, never offered to help me and never apologized. A staff member from the kitchen ran out to help me despite Michel being an arms length from me, looking down on me. Such a disgrace. My dress was dirtied from their floor and I was left with bruises on my knees the next day. No wet floor sign, clearly the floor wasn't cleaned up properly or dried. We will never patronize this restaurant again. What was meant to be a beautiful event turned into a calamity met with a chauvinist owner who lacks customer service and compassion.
