This is a fine jazz club tucked in behind a nice restaurant. Have yourself an evening of sublime music, delicious foods, amazing crafted drinks, great bartenders, and good company at 18th & 21st. We made a last-minute decision to try for some of the nightly jazz (except Monday) at 18th & 21st on a Friday evening (Oct 2025), hip-ly named for the prohibition amendment and repeal :-) There's a free parking garage right across from the entrance of the building they share with a sister restaurant, Cured. We arrived in the bright seasonally-decorated welcoming lobby about 7:50pm. We ought to have made reservations, but in under 10min, the reception staff took us to the more intimate room towards the back where we were seated at at the bar, which is really what we wanted. When we arrived, the 6pm jazz band had just gone on break, so we felt free to chat with friendly regulars and with the bar staff. They have a changing list of ten craft beers from $6 to $21, plus one $6 non-alcoholic brew. Five of the $14-$35 per-glass vintage wines from their list of 17 are preserved with the "corovin" system that keeps air out, so they are never "corked". We focussed on their list of 11 crafted $13-$22 cocktails plus 5 non-alcoholic ones, all made with quality ingredients, each naming the staff member(s) (and guests) who formulated the recipe! We found Alex's $16 Fernetinez sublimely sweet: of bitter fernet amaro, Frederick-based locally-sourced award-winning McClintock One Last Time gin (exclusive for 18th&21st), smooth Luxardo liqueur, and a sweet vermouth. We loved the aroma and flavor of the classic Smoked Old Fashioned of bourbon from Kentucky's 10th-oldest distillery, Green River, moved to a mild well-rounded sweetness by brown sugar simple syrup, smoked in front of me by Mike (if i remember), with added richness from smoky bitters. They have a creative menu of $30 to $65 entrees, plus salads, small plates, apps, and sides, and they have a changing menu of small plates. We really hadn't planned on eating, but we couldn't resist. The $17 duck bao buns had thin tender filets with a sweet lightly-salty apricot-soy glaze and a tangy crunchy pickled cucumber slaw on a soft folded yeasted slightly-sweet white-flour bun. The $12 pair of fried fresh-tasting oysters were sweet and juicy with a light-flavored crunchy crust. They were so yummy, and easy to enjoy with our cocktails. Rodney Kelly's jazz band was excellent, playing with spirit, joking with each other and the audience, even staging a song or two with a skilled member of the restaurant staff. Afterwards we had brief moments with some of the band members, like an intimate jazz club. Later in the evening, i also had a Turkish Sunset, a Manhattan-variation created in a collaboration among the staff and a guest (Well-done Ozzie!). I love Elijah Craig, and wanted to try their dry toasted rye, with housemade allspice dram syrup, Small Hands grenadine, and bitters. By now, i felt very much at home with the staff, and when i learned that one of them had helped formulate this beverage, i confided that its amazing complexity was, for me, just a touch too dry. Alex (if i remember) considered the ingredients and the target flavors, and added just a touch of a sweet lemony liqueur, perfectly complimenting the recipe's flavors! Beautiful upscale jazz restaurant located with Cured. I recommend dressing nice but it's not required. They normally have live jazz, whether it's a band or a single performer. Service is exemplary. 18th & 21st is definitely one of those spots you go to when you want a more elevated night out. The ambiance is dim, modern, and intimate perfect for a date night or special occasion. We started with a bottle of La Crema Pinot Noir (listed at $68.21), which was smooth and paired really well with everything we ordered. That said, this is where things got a little concerning. The waiter initially charged us $110 for the bottle, and if I hadn't caught it, we would have overpaid by a lot. He did fix it, but honestly that's a pretty big red flag and not something you expect at this price point. The charred octopus ($23.18) was a standout. Tender with a smoky char and pickled onions and a creamy sauce that balanced everything out. For the entree, we got the half rack of lamb ($49.18) and the duck breast ($46.18). Both were cooked as we liked. The lamb was flavorful with crispy potatoes, and the duck had a great sear and richness without being too heavy. Dessert was the mango mousse coconut cake ($12.18), which was light and not overly sweet. However, we were told ahead of time it would be complimentary and that they would write "Happy Anniversary" on it neither of those things happened, and we were charged for it. That was disappointing and felt a bit sloppy. Service overall was on the slower side. The one bright spot was the bartender, Abel, who was great and actually made the experience better by offering us a complimentary glass of champagne to celebrate. Also note there is an automatic 20% service charge added to the bill. Overall, the food and ambiance were strong, but the service issues and billing mistakes took away from the experience. Hello everyone I had the pleasure of dining at 18th and 21st. What a wonderful place to have a date night. The entrance reminds you of a speakeasy hidden away as you walk through Cured. The doorway reveals elegant seating, a full bar, and stage for live music. I was fortunate to enjoy the live jazz band for about an hour before the restaurant closed. The bartenders came ready to serve and prepared amazing cocktails. I encourage you to get them to have fun and make you a cocktail of their choice off menu. The appetizers and food did not disappoint one bit. I throughly enjoyed the charcuterie spread which is al a carte. The more you order the more you save in a way with the single item cost of $8. Go for the Serrano and Chorizo. The tempura was fresh, crispy, and plentiful. It did arrive a bit greasy which was ok because it came directly out of the fryer and very hot upon arrival. It would be nice if it were paired with a dipping sauce. The main course was a home run and honestly you can't go wrong between the lamb or short rib. The lamb was well seasoned and grilled to the perfect temp. Don't be afraid to place the utensils aside and go for it. The short rib gives you at home comfort food made with care. The beef flavor was bold, savory, and had an amazing tenderness. Honestly you could eat it with a spoon. Overall 4.5 of 5 I do recommend guest to arrive early to take in the ambiance, capture photos, have a cocktail, and prepare for the live music entertainment. What a cool spot! You have to walk through the connecting restaurant, Cured, before you go through the wooden door to 18th & 21st. It's dimly lit and creates a romantic vibe. A live pianist played at the beginning and throughout the evening, the music switched up a bit which was great to hear. A bit loud when the band played but really fun vibes. I first tried their Blueberry Mint Lemondrop cocktail which was a bit sweet but still good. For my 2nd drink I switched it to It's Daiquiri Thyme which was similar to a rum punch and very refreshing. For foods, we shared the Brussels Sprouts, Day Boat Scallops, and Maryland Crabcake. All the food were delicious but I definitely feel everything had so much sauce it was a little overpowering. The Brussels sprouts were smothered in it and the scallops with polenta had a lot as well along with the crabcake. The servers kept refilling my water glass multiple times given how thirsty I was from all the sauce and salty flavors of the dishes we ordered. I came here to celebrate an anniversary dinner, and I have to say, it really feels like the place to be on the weekend. It's tucked away between buildings. You'd never know it was there, which seems to be a Columbia thing, honestly. We checked in and waited about 10 minutes before being called back, then another 10 minutes at our table before a waitress came by. A slow start for sure, but once she arrived, everything picked up. The drinks were AMAZING. Strong but you couldn't even taste the liquor, which made them dangerously good. As for the food, my lamb chops were delicious, and the salad came with whole sardines, which was a nice surprise. Wow! What a unique place. Came here for my anniversary dinner and had an incredible time! The menu is small and indulgent but everything we had was great. We got 2 drinks, 1 app, 2 entrees and it was about $200 including tip. Note that they do automatically include 20% on all bills. The music is at a perfect volume to enjoy and chat. We had the lobster fritters which had huge chunks of lobster and a butter sauce. If I had to be hyper critical, I'd note that the batter itself was tasteless (though crispy!) and the butter sauce was plain. I would've rather had more of a duck sauce with it. For entrees - my husband got the short rib and I got the scallops. The scallops were delish and came with 6, which I felt was a lot! I loved the pumpkin puree (I'm sure this is seasonal and would change) and the crispy prosciutto. My husband love his short rib, noting it was tender and fell right apart. We were also given a nice cupcake and card to celebrate our anniversary, which was very thoughtful. My only complaint is there was one couple who was more than a bit disruptive and staff did nothing to subdue them. For reference, there are house rules listed on each table, including noting for guests to use inside voices and not take phone calls. I guess these are optional "rules"? The woman was singing LOUDLY to the instrumental jazz music in this small restaurant. Later, the man took a FACETIME PHONE CALL, which is just absolutely outrageous. Wonderful place. My wife and I went for our anniversary. We didn't even know this place existed so I searched for "upscale restaurants" and up popped 18th & 21st. The food is fantastic. We had the Brussel Sprout app, and the Lamb Rack and Scallops for our mains. Prepared and tasted great. The waitstaff was incredible. Attentive but not at all overly so. When we tried to order appetizers our server said that the table was smaller so she recommends ordering all the food at once ( which doesn't make sense). When my friend said we would still like to order, she just repeated that the table was really small. The order wasn't put in until the rest of our order was placed. What to skip: Branzino ( it hurts my heart to say this because I love Branzino). The Branzino was only ok and the rice wasn't cooked at all. It wasn't al dente- it was severely undercooked. When I told the waitress she told me jasmine rice is harder than other rice ( ). I explained that I've had jasmine rice before and that this was not cooked. The front bar at Cured is a great spot for a beer, but the real magic is behind the door near the bathrooms. Once you step into the speakeasy in the back, you're in a different era. The whiskey and bourbon selection is the most massive, well-curated collection I've ever seen--it makes a standard liquor store look like a gas station shelf. I was a little skeptical about the whole "Speakeasy" vibe but after being escorted to a location, you would never actually find walking around on your own, it definitely fits the description. I love the 60s Supper Club feel, it's like the moment you walk through the door, you are thrown into a time of sky views , Jazz and fine dining. The dish was served as a chunk of lobster in the middle of the plate, vegetables surrounding the lobster, and a thin, sweet sauce on the bottom. The vegetables in the tempura were tasty with the sauce. The lobster was chewy, and it was difficult to get any sauce on the lobster. The mushroom pasta was bland with a thin watery sauce. So you ever visit a place and wonder why it took you so long because the experience was so good? That was my experience at 18th & 21st. I went with a couple of my friends for our last book club session of the year and it was a pleasant surprise. We ordered the wings, brussel sprouts, crab pizza, mussels & egg rolls appetizers. Everything was so good (minus the pizza: we found the bread to be too thick) that we decided to order another round and ditch the main course. I was pleasantly surprised since my previous attempts weren't successful without reservations. I highly recommend marking reservations. If you don't get seating at 18th & 21st you can still enjoy the restaurant portion at Cured. IF you enjoy truffles and scallops I definitely recommend their Truffle Croquette and Seared Scallops. And for dessert, try their Classic Creme Brûlée as it will not disappoint. The drinks were also good. They had some interesting concoctions and some twists on classic cocktails. Actually, a really high class speakeasy because it's bigger than your typical, has an elegant setting, and live piano music. You'd expect the cocktails to be great and they don't disappoint. The food is really good; and exceptional by speakeasy standards (because many speakeasies only have light fare).
