They installed a water heater in my home. I was upgrading from a 40 gal. to a 50 gal. tank and they didn't increase the flue size from a 3 in. to a 4 in. Because of that it failed inspection. I called them a few times to fix it, and twice the person I spoke to said I would receive a call back to schedule the fix. I never got a call. The last few times I tried to call I couldn't even get a person on the phone. Instead I'm getting it fixed by a more trustworthy plumber who is knowledgeable of local codes. read more

I'd like to review both Home Depot and 1 800 Heaters Of Edison, New Jersey as they both helped me in the diagnostic, removal and replacement of my previous Hot Water Heater. They also helped with the installation of my new Hot Water Heater. I want to help others as this sudden break down left my family and I in wonderment as no plumber contacted. wanted to service the situation. I'll walk interested persons through this process (that both Home Depot and 1800Heaters greatly simplified). My hot water heater of 8 years recently failed. I began contacting plumbers and was shocked that they didn't want to deal with the situation. 2 Days later our county experience a full power outage. This was an horrific time as my health medication must stay cooled. Despite all these set backs I was able to use an internet search engine with the wording "hot water heater installation". This is when the Home Depot web site appeared. In all honesty up till this point my family and I had no helpful information and/or no plan to resolve this "fallen issue". I clicked on the "Hot Water Heater" Home Depot internet link. I was immediately taken into an online questionaire. This was sheer brilliance. I was able to answer questions that would help Home Depot help me. I answered all the questions and selected the "submit" link. With in 20 minutes my phone rang. I was then talking to a Home Depot (Edison, NJ) Representative who told me what information she needed concerning the "downed" heater. I was able to obtain this information from the heater and she began informing me of all the how's, why's, costs and necessities for a successful replacement/installation. Once gain whoever came up this process is Brilliant! It Only Gets Better Now! Enter The 1 800 Heaters (Edison, NJ) Repair Man! On the day of the appointment I received a phone call to confirm the appointment. Very Professional. The Repair Man arrived on time. He began evaluating everything and advising me on what to do. He then advised the correct Hot Water Heater from my home (explaining all the reasons why: such as wire gauge size and the correct fuse ampage for the new heater). During his two visits he also gave great advise on clean up materials. Following his advisories I was able to provide him with better lighting during his second visit. The second visit began again with the morning confirmation call. The Repair Man returned again and did a Great Job Of Installation And Clean Up. Everything was always Up Front with both Home Depot and 1 800 Heaters (Edison, NJ) with no surprises. Also all paper work was emailed to my email address with in 20 minutes of this replacement/installation. My family and I have always been praying people and are glad everything worked out. All the same stuff happened to me that happened to the other reviewers. Hidden cost with the 1-800 heaters they farm everything out to. PSEG gives a different estimate which was a lot less. I am changing there tagline from 'Worry Free' to "Worry More". You would think PSEG is legit but we learned that they are as crooked as the plumbers they sent - 1-800 Heaters. They have to know this is going on but choose to ignore it. We were quoted $600 for a part that ended up spending $50 at a legitimate plumber. They even mark up the permit to get the water heater. I had a heater suddenly break and leave me with only cold water at the house. Now you might wonder if there is ever anything other than a sudden break, but actually - this was. There was a VERY slow leak from a pipe above the heater, right in the back so you didn't see it, that seems to have perfectly compromise the unit - the bottom was quite rusted out. It's possible that wasn't related, but once I saw the heater itself was leaking, I figured the tank was done (not bad - got 15 years out of her). Drove and called around, finally settling on Home Depot's emergency repair service. Before the night was over I got a call from 1800 Heaters and ordered a unit from them. Right from the start I had a good experience. They walked me through the whole process (never did this before) and kindly went through their three options. Based on the unit, labor, disposal - I was able to get a good deal (looked up ranges online and it was in margin), even getting $100 off. We scheduled an installation the very next morning (Sat AM). The installation was great and I was very, very satisfied. The technician, Ruben Ortiz, was excellent. He was on time, respectful, enthusiastic, really instilled confidence that he could do (and did) the job very well. I thoroughly appreciate that he helped me understand the process each step of the way - giving me technical details or layman details, as asked - and he did a great job. I even had a funky vent setup going on, the water heater & home heating unit connected in a functional, albeit "innovative", way. Given the updated codes & the rust (from that uncanny leak), the vent system had to be re-done. He did a really great job -- you can tell he takes pride in his work. You have to respect that. We had our old water heater replaced and shortly after, the new water heater failed and caused extensive damage to our basement. After professionally testing the failed part, the water heater failed due to damage caused by the installer. I have tried multiple times to reach out requesting a refund for our services, and 1-800 Heaters has been completely unresponsive. I have asked many times to speak to someone of authority and my requests have been ignored. This behavior is indicative of 1-800 heaters knowing they are at fault but refusing to take responsibility. I have a mixed review here. I went online to Home Depot to buy a water heater and requested a quote to install. They were extremely quick to call me back and I went through everything with them. When I ordered my water heater, I provided the model number from Home Depot site and features that I was looking for. (Wifi module was key). The sales person provided a price and installation for later in the day. The installer EricD showed up on time and after what seems like forever amount of paperwork, he began installation process... On a side note he was extremely knowledgeable and hard working and also greatly appreciated same day installation. He removed our old water heater and was getting ready to install the new one. For some reason it crossed my mind to confirm the model. It was the wrong one (I really hope this was a honest mistake and not a bait and switch like others have complained about). It was not wifi compatible and was not as energy efficient as the one i was looking for) Lesser cost model and did not have the features I wanted. He did not have the one I requested since the sales person put down the wrong one model. I asked for him to reach out to the company to correct the situation. I then requested to also talk to a manager or owner to talk to for me to resolve. No one was available at this time, however I was told one would be available at 5:00 and would call me. No one did.... At this point he had only 2 choices which were to install the wrong one or my old one that was failing. Since I could not establish a direction because no manager or owner was available or decision from the company of next steps, elected to install the wrong one. Later that evening, since I did no receive a call from the company at 5:00 as committed, I went to Home Depot to talk to a manager (after 7:00). The Home Depot manager got the company on the phone and we reviewed everything with a gentleman named James. James was as helpful as he could because he did not have decision making capability for this situation. He took all the notes, was extremely friendly and said he will pass this along. 2 days later I still had not heard from the management, owner or anyone from the company. Called the Home Depot manager, that helped me a few days before. Told him that I had not received a call and he got on a call with them. The company told him that they tried to reach out to me (I had no record of this), however the Home Depot Manager said that my contact information was my cell phone and made them call me right away. They scheduled the installation, of the correct water heater, for the following week Monday. Which is fine since we had a working water heater. EricD showed up on time again and was extremely nice and professional. He swapped it out with the correct water heater and we are up and running. Even though I never did hear from a manager or owner of the company, they made it right by installing the correct water heater, did not charge me additional, and did a great job with both installations. I really hope they take care of EricD, he did a great job with the installations and did whatever he could to resolve issues within his authority. Hate to say it, if it was not for him I think the review would have been different and a lot less. I also appreciate whoever made the decision to install the correct water heater and did not try to charge me more on what I already paid. Like others say, horrible customer service and technicians, add on $$ for things you don't need. If you buy through HD, try to get a local plumber to install it. Might pay more but the job will be done right, without additional costs for other things breaking when they install it. If you buy through PSE&G, just don't. The hidden cost you have is all the things you have to fix after they come through and/or having to pay for the add ons at the time of install. Not worth the hassle and better to look elsewhere for peace of mind. Their business is on volume, not reliability or doing things properly. Reliable/long-lasting and cheap are like oil and water. It's been 24 hours since our 14 year old water heater broke and new one installed! I called other companies and they wanted to send someone to quote it and then come back again and install it ! I ordered the hot water heater from Home Depot. They sent 800 Heaters to install it. 800 Heaters said it would cost 715 more than the $999 estimate to install, because I needed an expansion tank due to high water pressure, which I accepted as true. This should cost $200 max in my area. They also said I need 4 other things, all of which should be part of the original install cost. After I told them to leave, they agreed to $500. I would not recommend using them, or contracting Home Depot for install. Use a local plumber who is more likely to be honest. read more

They do not return phone calls or answer emails requestring follow ups or further information. I purchased a water heater from home depot and home depot's contractor is 1800 heaters Inc. They are a little expensive but i was willing to pay to have the job done right because it involves gas. I ended up paying 698.00 because an upgrade of flue pipe is required to pass inspection by township. Everything was good until the job began. They didn't have a bucket to catch the water and no cleaning materials. When one of the contractor, undo the connections, a small amount of water gushing out and they wasn't prepared by not having proper equipment available. I had rush and to gave them a bed sheet and a bucket to catch the water leak. Finally, when they completed the job... they neglected to clean up the messes they made in the closet. There were debris all over the floor. Also, one of the guys washed his hands and left a mess. I spent close to 700.00 and 20 minutes of my time , cleaning up after them. I called the main head quarter in Edison NJ and they were very understanding and decided to credit 25.00 towards the job. Please be advised that 1800 heaters have 2 locations, and the location that i have problems with is located in PA. read more

If I could give no starts I would. I am not one to write reviews EVER but this is something else. The only reason I went with 1800Heaters was because they are a Home Depot contracted install company. My water heater that was still under warranty started to leak and needed to be replaced. I had two installers come and spend 8 hours replacing the heater. Now six weeks later the pressure valve pouring water. Called on a Sunday night and was told that a manager would call back within an hour...never called. Another two days with no hot water and more money to replace another part that should have been replaced originally. SHAME. read more

I ordered a water heater through Home Depot and was contacted the next morning by a 1800waterheater dispatcher. She was very pleasant and went through the process and pricing. Everything was good except that she said they need photographs of the current water heater - the entire heater, the of of the heater, the bottom of the heater and one other pic. This unit is going into my rental property, so I cannot just go into the basement and snap pics. Two dispatchers later, and two phone calls from me to them finally put me in touch with the manager (Mike, the guy who has held up any further processing until he gets the pictures). He continues to insist upon the pictures, though he said he only needs one full-view picture, but he than asked for the phone number of my tenant. It is now seven hours after the first call and there is still no installation scheduled. My tenant is without hot water. We have a workable plan, but... But, this requirement should be made known when I first ordered the heater from Home Depot, not when a dispatcher called me 9+ hours after order placement and after the day's jobs are already scheduled. Home Depot and 1800waterheaters need to fix this process problem. If you are going to buy a water heater from Home Depot and 1800waterheaters is your installer, know that you will need to give them pictures of you existing unit before they will take action. Our water heater was on the fritz so we went to The Home Depot to purchase a new one, using them for installation as well. Home Depot contracts 1800 Heaters and they were the ones who took care of everything once we left the store. We were contacted by 1800 Heaters with a window of 11AM - 3PM on Saturday, August 27th and Jaimie (with an assistant) arrived around 11AM. They were very nice and extremely professional. They looked over the old water heater, assessed the surrounding space then began working by first placing drop cloths on our floors to avoid any damage. The job took a little over an hour and we did not require any additional work or encountered a price increase. We would definitely use/recommend The Home Depot/1800 Heaters again. Just like so many others have stated; they "conveniently" forget to ask the right questions about your current water heater, and then when they arrive they insist you must upgrade the exhaust vent. They sent one guy who immediately came in and told me I needed a 4 inch flue or it wouldn't pass inspection and it would be an extra $240! Got to 1-800-Waterheaters via Lowes. Contacted Lowes (and a few others, store and private) for quotes, all-in-all pretty much price fixed. As for the Permit filing fee markup - come-on a little unnecessary for that these days! Some key points - Quote process straight forward, photos, measurements etc. to see if it was possible to use existing plumbing. - House built 2006 - this is the the first replacement - Dual heaters, one still working - Scheduling 1-800 said next day, plumber called needed an extra day to collect heaters (note Lowes only had 3 in nearest 3 stores- I needed two!) - Cleared the whole path to the heaters and area around it - Plumber didn't confirm actual time but did arrive at 10am - My father was a plumber, and thats how I spend my school vacations so no wool could be pulled over my eyes Plumber - Ruben - Very informative, listen to his comments, what he is going to do when, steps, processes, inspections, code etc.. etc.. he's like a youtube video - Cleanliness - not a spot of mess (even cleaned the area they were going to be placed from dirt that collect underneath) - Quality - let's just say Ruben takes A LOT, A VERY LOT of pride in his work. - Time - we were his only job today, so there was no rush. He was patient, explained everything - Equipment- one heater had an external mark (inside the packaging) - Ruben addressed this immediately - Knowledge - yep as I said he takes a lot of pride in his work, he knows the codes, the gotchas and will inform you accordingly. If you do not agree to bring it up-to-code, that's OK, sign-off they can do the work and if the inspector let's it fly so be it - if not then you'll be without a permitted water heater until it's brought in-line - A.O.B - We had a walk-out basement with a few steps that made life a little easier and I gave him a hand. I went through Home Depot because that is where the water tank was from, apparently still under warranty so tank free but $1000 +++ for installation. The Guy had to come out 3x to replace the water heater, destroyed the painting on my stairs. By the third time I called the town plumbing inspector and spoke to a supervisor at 1-800-Heaters, he ASSURED me this plumber was top notch and well vetted. The tank was leaking water from below all 3x, on his 3rd visit here he realized I did not need a new HW heater but it was the hose from the washe leaking, rolling down hill under the tank. So I now have a water heater i didnt need. Called PSEG to get a new hot water installed. 1-800-Heaters got dispatched. Today was a nightmare. Technician blew out the water hose on my washing machine on the second floor and caused a flood in my ceiling to the first floor. Then wanted to charge me $120 to replace the hose. He then gave me a pamphlet for a water damage company. This company refused to pay for any damages they caused by his improper installation. I called PSEG and they don't care, saying he didn't touch the washing machine so he's not responsible. They caused me such stress today. I've been in the phone all day but Nothing. I'm stuck with a non working washer and water in my ceiling. He also charged me for a expansion tank $250 which I did not need according to SB inspector an $77 in permit fees. I'm in such distress over this company today. I have three children who witnessed the disaster today. Stay away from this company. Such bad business practice. BTW... This is a long overdue review. 1800 heaters is the authorized water heater contractor with Home Depot. So you really have no choice but to go with them if you want to buy a water heater from HD. The sales person Laura, was nice before you made the decision to buy. As soon as you made the purchase, it was horrible. First, she didn't disclosed about the additional $75 for haul away the old water heater. When I called back and she just blatantly lied about it. But I would give her credit for listening to the tape to confirm that indeed she forgot to disclose. Nonetheless she did honored the credit BUT their subcontractor who actually did the install still charged us regardless because they said 1800 heaters never mentioned that to them. Of course the story doesn't end there, the install was a total disaster so we refused to sign off on the completion agreement. There was a miscommunication between the plumber and this company in regards to the size of our old water heater. Hence they have to come back another day to remove the old one coz they did not have the tool to lift up the old water heater. The initial plumbers were nice but the guy who came back the next day was horrible. Of course, the new water heater was leaking. When we called 1800 heaters back, Laura accused us of breaking our own water heater. WOW. When the plumber came back the next day, while the water were leaking out in front of my eyes, he said he didn't see any water coming out. WTF at this point. He went out to call 1800 heaters when I refused to sign the completion agreement and paid them for the second time. I called my husband and he told me to tell him to leave and don't let him back inside the house. Boy we are glad we did that. What they didn't know was we have our nest door camera which captured the ENTIRE conversation he had with this company. Long story short, they were gonna come back inside the house and cut off the heater so we won't get hot water at all. What kind of company would allow his plumbers to do such thing? We live in the Northeast and it was winter time. Anyway, if you really need a water heater from HD and have them install for you. you will have to deal with them unfortunately so brace yourself. I would recommend just buy a water heater and find a local plumber to do the install. Lesson learned. And FYI, HD was NO help in this situation despite several complaints. There was one guy from this company that eventually helped us to resolve the problems. But it was a long process and extremely unpleasant. OK let me make this clear! This is not to denigrate the installers in any way, but this is a total rip off! Called Home Depot for a new water heater that was listed at their store for $407 plus tax. Got quoted by their installer (1800 HEATERS). a fee of $861 plus $98 for Building Permit. The installer claimed that the flue pipe (3") was not code for the 36000 BTU heater that I was buying, it must be 4". The charge for 2-4" tin elbows and 2-4x24" tin vent pipes was $265. Material cost less than $25 and took 5 minutes to install is HIGHWAY ROBBERY! The installers were absolutely professional and neat in their work, but were only doing what they have been trained to do. GET A LOCAL INSTALLER IF AT ALL POSSIBLE! I bought a GE (Rheem) water heater which failed after six years. After many phone calls and hemming and hawing, no one at GE or 1 800 heaters (or Home Depot where the heater was really purchased seems interested in returning a call or offering to step up on this. I have bought more than a dozen water heaters of the years and NONE failed at six years; they typically last 10 years. I would give GE and Rheem a FAIL on the quality of their product and 1800 heaters a fail for ignoring their customer. read more
