There are 3 different cup sizes to fill to your liking. The kind man working allowed me to sample a few flavors, and I decided on the cheesecake and cookies and cream. They had cookie dough from DO in NYC as an option for toppings, so I had some of the DO Reese's Pieces dough as well! Ugh, I love 16 Handles way too much. I almost wish it wasn't so close to the subway, because I'm terrible at resisting temptation, and every time I'm near the Bedford L (which is often), I have to get me some delicious froyo. I'm taking off one star because I only like one flavor of their froyo (Euro Tart). The other flavors are, for the most part, way too sweet and bland for me. Euro Tart, however, is just right. Not too sweet, not too icy, with a slight tang. It's the perfect foundation for building the ultimate froyo treat. Which brings me to my favorite thing about 16 Handles... their toppings bar. It's the best I've seen to date. I'm not really sure where to start, because just thinking about it whips me into a frenzy. They have EVERYTHING. There's the usual suspects, like fruit (yawn), cereal, sprinkles, juice pearls. But there's crazy fun stuff, too, like rainbow cookies, ridiculously creamy cheesecake bites, frosted animal crackers and banana chips foster (seasonal only, I fear). And lastly, something I don't fully understand, but can't get enough of: hazelnut crunch. It's like Nutella sauce with tons of little crunchies in it. It truly defies description and has to be experienced to be believed. One minor annoyance - they used to let you swirl your own samples, but now you have to ask an employee to give you a taste. This place has a lot of flavor options and toppings, which was really exciting, but I experienced a few downsides. One being when I got two of the three flavors I wanted the consistency that came out was slimy and gooey almost looking like a soup. So I moved onto to finding new flavors that looked more like frozen yogurt. Then I bee lined to my favorite toppings. Sadly the strawberries looked like they were smooshed into a jam and the brownie bites got morphed into crust chunks into the corners of the container. The redeeming factor was the Nutella, of which I gladly substituted for. I finally came here with my boyfriend and our daughter a few weeks ago. The staff is very attentive and helpful. My favorite flavor is the birthday cake and my daughter LOVES chocolate love affair. My boyfriend likes all of the flavors and prefers to put a ridiculous amount of toppings on his froyo. Whatever floats his boat. I am a self proclaimed self serve frozen yogurt junkie. One of my most frequent Yelp searches is 'self serve yogurt' in hopes a new place has popped up. 16 Handles opening did not disappointment. Delicious flavors run from peanut butter to cookies and cream to cake batter, along with the standards of chocolate, vanilla, and tart. Topping bar has always looked clean and has a bunch of fresh fruit along with the less healthy, more yummy, options like cookie dough and cheesecake bites. My only wish is they had a better seating arrangement. It gets very crowded and the long bench of seats makes it tricky to sit and chat. read more

I am so sorry Pinkberry, but you have met your match. Although they have locations in NYC, my boyfriend brought me here for the first time the first night of me living with him. Being a devoted Pinkberry fan I was hesitant, but tried it anyway, and you know what? I'm glad I did !! The variety of flavors and toppings are so awesome, not to mention low in calories (the froyo at least lol). My favorites are the cheesecake, graham cracker and salted caramel. I like the fact that I can serve myself my own toppings. It's always clean and it really helps with the experience that the employees are so nice. We've been here so many times since that some of them even recognize us and we have some small talk. If you're ever in Stamford, or happen to walk by one in NYC, don't pass this place up. I came in after dinner and when I asked for a sample the very nice manager walked over with the tiny paper sample cup and asked which I wanted to try. At that point he was rubbing his face with the same hand the sample cup was in. So my sample cup was basically 1/8" next to his oily face. At that point I realized I did not want a sample of this hand/face oils mixed with froyo. My husband made his froyo cup, and this same male employee is now itching and rubbing his head/hat+hair above the toppings bar. I mean gross man. Then he rings my husband at the register, handles cash, then does it all again for another customer. This place needs a visit from the health department. Seriously. Gross man. read more

Best ice cream ever! There are so many choices of flavors, and the toppings are extraordinary. Good prices, and a friendly staff make it the best place in its area. In addition, the flavors are always changing, based on the season. In October my fav is the pumpkin apple spiced yogurt with some chocolate mixed in. I especially enjoy the hot chocolate flavored in the winter, with the mint chocolate as a base. Perhaps my favorite is the Summer special which is the fruit explosion mixed with caramel. VEGANS LOVE THIS PLACE! I got so happy when I realized that 16 Handles was vegan friendly. They typically have 2 vegan flavors of soft serve (yo soy vanilla is AMAZING) and numerous vegan toppings! This is my favorite fro-yo place. Its clean and everyone who works there is nice. The only down side is they lock the back door so if you park out back you have to walk around. Sometimes there's a ton of teenagers hanging out in the front area too- But Id walk miles for this fro yo if I had to so its worth it. Very very good! read more

The froyo and toppings selections are superb. I highly recommend a blueberry-chocolate froyo mix, topped with some hot fudge and sprinkles. Staff is friendly and courteous, however they normally make remarks about my height, which I am used to being as tall as I am. My worry is that a self-conscious tall person will feel uncomfortable in there and not want to go back. It's all in the concept, I guess. They offer many flavors of soft serve frozen yogurt that you dispense, add toppings to, and get weighed. It's fun, but it's also something I used to do at the Bonanza and my college cafeteria. You are sure to have a cup that weighs more than you think so it gets expensive.
