She looked confused as to where to seat us and eventually decided on the very back corner near the kitchen. We then requested a booth since the restaurant was less than half full and we wanted a slightly more pleasant experience. Our waitress was not rude but apathetic. The food was not good. My scrambled eggs were crispy, the French toast was soggy, and the syrup came with a film across the top. My fiancé's food came with an unidentified object on the toast. We have passed by here over the years, but never stopped in until about a week ago. Glad we did. Our server was awesome. She was very sweet and made sure to check on us often. The food was good. Pretty typical diner style food, but good. I didn't care for the potatoes I got (home fries style) because they were mushy. Now that's just me being picky because I'm partial to the way I make them. I went in the middle of the week for lunch. I ordered breakfast. I immediately regretted this decision. Everything tasted like a frozen meal that someone heated up. The sausage gravy is obviously powdered gravy with a few chunks of sausage. I got tomatoes on the side and they tasted like fish? To top it all off, the iced tea tastes like a powdered mix. Ok...so I was really hoping to give this place 5 stars. Not only because getting my fiancé to try new places can be a bit of a Grail quest but also because I wanted to find a good new local spot. Here is how I rate, 1 star possible for each of the following categories: food, price (meaning price as being accurate for the actual cost of food), service, experience then 1 star for that undefinable "it" factor. That being said, this is why I rated this place 1 star. Experience: 1/4 We arrived at 1 p.m and they were on a wait. Granted I have no idea how long the wait was as the very cheerful (I mean that sarcastically) hostess took our name and told us to have a seat while we waited but didn't give us a time estimate. Waits don't bother me in a weird way I like seeing a wait as it usually means the place is worth the wait. Besides, we showed up as the super crazy church rush crowd was finishing up eating. Having a chef/restaurant owner for a mom I know all about wait times, food timing and kitchen meltdowns. What cracked me up was that the (I'm assuming) manager kept trying to make jokes with those of us waiting about how they were on a wait because the kitchen staff was having a meltdown and that they were running on a 30 minute food wait. After this I jokingly asked my fiancé if that was the case why in the world was the manager up front with us making jokes and rolling silverware when he should be in the kitchen expediting his crew out of the weeds. His comments did cause 2 groups waiting to leave but we stayed because again this is a breakfast place and on a Sunday at 1:00 they SHOULD be on a wait! The manager did kindly offer us a beverage while we waited but we declined as we knew we were 1st on the list and several groups were leaving. We were sat at 1:18 after only waiting 18 minutes. Service-1/4 star Our server was very nice. She greeted us promptly and brought our AWESOME coffee asap. She also brought us water without us having to ask which I love when you order coffee. She quickly took our order and brought the biscuit and gravy out first as we had asked. Her service was not really the problem, it was the lack of teamwork that bothered me. We were sat at 1:18 had our coffee by 1:25 and I didn't get a coffee refill until 2:15 after having to ask twice. I know our server was busy but 3 times other servers walked past me with a coffee pot and my cup was at the edge of our table obviously awaiting a refill of black gold! I don't understand how it is not a waitstaff policy to not scan other tables you walk past for coffee refills when you are walking around with it in your hand! After this our check was brought to us a 2:23 (as shown on the receipt) My fiancé already had his card out when she brought it so by 2:24 we were ready to pay. Again, countless other servers walked past our ticket and card and did not take it for her nor the manager who could have been walking around doing quality checks. He was still just up front rolling silverware. Come to think of it, he could have also brought me more coffee had he been working the floor instead of tomorrow's (they close at 3) silverware. We did not pay until 2:35 (see pic). I have no complaints on our server, she was great, but in a place with 7 servers a manager and a hostess no one should have to wait for anything. She was working super hard but had no support. Food-1/4 star We ordered a biscuit with sausage gravy, 1 pancake, 2 eggs, 1 piece French toast, 2 pieces chicken fried bacon and 2 coffees. That may sound like a weird order but their menu is set up in a strange almost a la carte type manner. The biscuit was homemade but the sausage gravy was sausage that was later covered with cream gravy, not cooked together...which makes a big difference. My over medium egg had very runny whites (ick) and my fiancé's over hard egg (well done) had runny yolk. My opinion, a breakfast restaurant should have their egg cooking down to a science. The pancake was...not hard, but I guess I could say heavy. It was almost the same consistency as a biscuit not light and fluffy like a pancake should be. The French toast was fine, nothing special but good. The chicken fried bacon was also fine but a little expensive (2.50 for 2 pieces). The one and only outstanding item was the coffee, super rich, dark and strong! Only coffee complaint was I only got 1 refill in the hour and 20 minutes we were at our table. Price: 1/4 star The weird a la carte menu setup makes your ticket really high really fast. In my opinion, 30 bucks for breakfast (with no booze or apps) is really high especially since we chose this place after doing a Yelp search for breakfast places with one $. Homemade cooking done right! Came here for supper one evening and was very pleasantly surprised. The service was quick and very friendly. I had the chicken fried chicken with mashed potatoes. everything has handmade, fresh and very tasty. In particular, the chicken fried chicken was very crispy and thick and juicy. Do not order breakfast tacos from this place. A $2.50 taco is the size of your index finger. The smallest tortilla you can find on the market. The potatoes are boiled. They are not even hashed or seasoned. The eggs are flavorless and cheese was missing in the taco. We ordered Potato, Egg and Cheese tacos. The salsa actually tasted like tomato paste. Heinz makes ketchup spicier than that salsa. We also ordered hot chocolate along with our tacos and got watered down brown water. We were very disappointed with the breakfast tacos. We thought this place served breakfast all day, but I wasn't expecting all day to mean, breakfast made in the morning and heated all day. That's exactly what those mini tacos felt like. Now I understand that this is a "traditional American breakfast" place, and breakfast tacos may not be something your grandma fed you growing up in the Hill Country, but if you are going to put it on the menu.. back it up with some effort!. If you wait and wait and wait for the food to arrive 45 minutes after you order, then it no longer matters how good the food is. I want to say I read all the bad reviews on this place and still decided to check it out and I'm happy I did. The food was amazing (I had the chicken fried bacon, sausage pancakes, grits and a biscuit). The service was great the waitress was even aware of a conversation my friend I were having and allowed us to continue and came back later to take our order. Food was brought out promptly and it was service with a smile and no long wait that I have seen repeatedly complained about in other reviews. Really good basic American cafe. All of the old standby's and a few unique items to keep it interesting. I've been there for both breakfast and lunch and enjoyed myself both times. My hunt for the best chicken fried steak around Austin continues, but the 1431 Cafe makes a pretty good one. The service was great both times I've been there, very friendly, prompt, and attentive. The prices are reasonable. The dining room is decent sized and I've never had to wait to be seated. They also have a decent kids menu, which made my little ones happy. If you are looking for a nice cafe to sit down and enjoy a meal, this is a good option. read more

In a nutshell: clean place, good service, less than mediocre food. When my friend and I came here for lunch, we were excited to try the local fare (something other than the gazillion fast food places). The stars on this review come solely from the cleanliness and the service. Above par for both. Beyond that, there's really no reason to come back here. I had fried catfish, fries, and tortilla soup. Stop judging - I know that's not a balanced meal. The soup had a half slice of white American cheese in it, but was otherwise edible. I was expecting fish and chips - batter fried catfish and potatoey fried deliciousness. The fries may have been potatoes at one point, but that was years before they were mutilated, stuffed in a bag, grew to old age in a freezer, and finally made it from a fryer to my plate. The catfish was battered in some grainy brown stuff, kinda like shake-and-bake. (I've seen "fried catfish" like this once before. It doesn't count, people.) Like the fries, clearly from freezer bag to fryer. My friend had the chicken fried steak. One of the worst she's had. 'Nuff said. Both of us had leftovers, but portion size does not make up for the faults of sub-par food. She didn't even get hers boxed. I boxed up mine, but then threw it in a dumpster in a strip mall 30 minutes later, because I realized there was no way I wanted to finish it. I typically dont review places, but the service was so poor here I had to comment. The food was decent - burgers, breakfast. chicken fry. Not the best, not the worst. But, when we got tea refills we asked for more limes. The server said they would have to charge us for that. In my life (a decent time) I have never heard of having to pay for limes or lemons with a tea refill. But things got worse. Got the bill, and was paying it, and I asked to speak with a manager. A short, unshaven guy came over and I told him that I had never experienced 'pay extra for lemons' for a refill. He basically told me how successful they were and that they 'charge for everything'. I then asked him to see the surcharge for the Tabasco I used -- jokingly. He then said 'if you dont like it you dont have to be here.' I replied 'Great, I doubt I will ever come back to this damn place, then.' He got mad and stormed off. As we got up to leave (no more than 30 secs after that wonderful encounter) I muttered 'Way to make make friends and influence people.' At which unshaven manager poked his head out from the serving line and yelled at me (literally yelled) 'You are an a--hole' (I am quoting him directly) and that I needed to leave. Too bad the dumb jacktard didnt seem to understand that I was already leaving after having paid my bill. If you are into paying extra for lemons with a tea refill, this place is exceptionally well suited for you. If you are into having managers tell you that 'too bad we are successful and you are obviously a moron for pointing out the lemon issue' -- again, go for it. And, if you are into managers screaming at you for 'being an a--hole' after you make a comment on *their* attitude, once again, this place is for you. Otherwise, I would steer clear of here. Went there for the first time a few days ago. I was initially skeptical due to some of the reviews here. I have to say, it was very good. I had chicken fried bacon as an appetizer.....it was as good as the legends say!! My wife liked it quite a bit, and she is not much of a bacon fan. We had excellent service. We were greeted warmly and seated promptly. We were never lacking in water or coffee. The wait staff was very attentive. We got refills on our stuff by 3 different people. The food arrived promptly and hot (it didn't sit for very long). My wife ordered a corn-beef hash. Wasn't what she was expecting....but it was huge! And good. She didn't like it as much as I because it had too many potato's and she's not a big fan of potato's...but the corn beef was excellent. And it was covered in this cheesy sauce that was delicious. I had the equivalent of a Grand Slam. Everything was very good. I would not hesitate to go back. If you like bacon, take a defibrillator and try the chicken fried bacon, you'll be glad you did! read more

This particular place has been a few failed business and I believe the 1431 Cafe has beat the record for staying in business by satisfying most of the patrons. During our visits the food is sometimes inconsistent but generally good. I've only been there for lunch and early dinner and always found the food plentiful to almost too much on my plate. Not bad....price is in the medium range. Service is always good, nothing spectacular. I go about every six (6) months or so. Which reminds me to find a better place. But Cedar Park is limited. The menu has a good variety, the quiche actually isn't too bad. Definitely filling. The artwork and decor is simple. On one wall they have kid's drawings-framed. So, I have been here a few times but only for breakfast. Each time I ordered the 1431 cafe special. So, walking in, it is truly a neighborhood kind of feel place. Small but big enough that you aren't sandwiched together. It appeared to have folks who frequent the place ... which, in itself it a nice feel. It is a clean place and the service is OK. The folks serving all appear to know and like each other. They server for each other when your order comes up. As for the food ... you know, it is basic breakfast food. Nothing fancy. I had eggs over medium which have been cooked perfectly fine although no flavor - but that is OK - I can add my own salt and pepper. The sausage is actually pretty tasty. They are sausage patties. You also get a short stack of pancakes. Now, I like a light kind of pancake. These are anything but light. They are very dense and not very tasty. It comes with a glob of butter smack in the middle and a little plastic thing of syrup. It was neither enough butter or syrup for me and certainly not for the density of these pancakes. Be sure to get extra before the waitstaff leaves your table! I'm a gal who orders a side of white toast to eat as my 'dessert' at the end of the meal with some jelly/jam. The toast was not fresh - it was rather crunchy as if it had been toasted adn set aside until ordered and then when ordered someone took a brush and brushed it full of butter. But even that butter didn't soften the bread! So, would I go back? Ya know, probably not for breakfast. I will return for lunch and pie. I had been wanting to try this place for a while, because I heard it was just like the 620 cafe. I was so disappointed! The food was bland, the coffee even worse. I ordered an all meat omelette with potatoes and an English muffin. My potatoes were raw, the omelette was ok until halfway when I bit into some chewy that grossed me out. I guess my expectations were to high because I was thinking it was going to be just like 620 cafe. To top it off a fly landed inside my coffee. The hubs and I went to this place this morning for breakfast. We usually go somewhere else for breakfast and we should have just gone to our usual place and not tried somewhere new. While the menu looks appetizing with large portions and lots to choose from the food was not great. I ordered the sausage scramble with corn tortillas and grits. I asked for a side of avocado and was told they don't have avocados. Huh? What restaurant doesn't have avocados? This one. The husband ordered the Steak and Eggs, and let's just say it was less than appetizing. The steak was small, flat, covered in grease with NO seasoning. We weren't expecting a juicy fillet but come on at least season the damn thing. We waited about 5 minutes before someone, (the mgr. I think), took our drink order. Then we waited a few more minutes for our server to great us. We will not be going back to this place. We'll stick to our usual breakfast restaurant. read more
