So we ran in this restaurant around 6:30pm and the middle age, over-weight hostess told us that she had "no table" and the place was "booked at least for next hour", but half-heartedly offered a table outside the door. We looked at each other and thought that it was late to walk around the cold with two sleeping babies in our arms, so we accepted it even though it wasn't ideal. We asked if a high chair can be set up for us and she said yes, even though it wasn't an enthusiastic one.
We sat there waiting for service like idiots for ten minutes, so I told my husband that I felt un-welcomed and warned that she probably forgot about us and that we probably won't get any service because we were seated outside.
Hoards of people started to leave the restaurant and at least 3 parties of people came in and got seated. They waited for no more than five mins by the door or inside the door and started to get seated one after another. I had an inkling that they didn't have reservation because it felt spontaneous, (like they literally walked on the street and curious about the restaurant so they went inside to check it out, not like a purposeful walk, where you know you heading to a place you had reservation, if you know what I mean.) But I thought it was unthinkable that she would offer new comers without reservations tables inside before us, with two small kids (a toddler and an infant). So after some time passed, no server came out to take our order nor asked for our drink orders, I looked up where we sat a saw paper print out menus held there by a plastic holder. I picked out two and gave my husband one. It was an okay menu, I wasn't enthusiastic to try anything in particular but narrowed it down to a crab encrusted Northwest Salmon dish, because it was mildly interesting. Still no one came outside to start the service so I told my husband that he should go inside and ask for a high chair because I was tired of holding our baby, and just place our orders since we're not exactly enjoying sitting outside in the cold chills. He ran in, placed an order with our sleeping toddler in his arms, while I sat outside waiting. More chills and cold winds blown our way, he came back and said he placed the order, but forgot to ask about the high chair that we asked before sitting down. He ran back waited his turn to ask her again for the high chair. Few more minutes passed and the hostess came out with a high chair, no apology nor slight indication that she felt bad about the lateness of its coming. I was concerned about the weather was getting too cold for my kids so I took off my sweater and wrapped it around my infant seating in the high chair. Then a few more minutes, a server came out to take our drink order. After I sat my infant in the chair and ran inside to use the restroom. I found that the restaurant had another covered outside eating area in the back. I also noticed that crowd was white, over half was middle-age, wine-drinking type, but I thought nothing of it, because it is a typical demographic for a small beach city community.
I ran back outside, then another group of people on the street came in (white, 20 something crowd). I overheard the guy commented that the restaurant was full, maybe they won't get a seat. Yes five minutes later, they were seated. And mind you not there were five or six adults in this group. I was upset, but knew how much my husband wanted to avoid Mo's, so I kept my thought and feelings to myself even though anger started to build inside. So over thirty minutes in, we saw parties after parties left and then another big party came in (I'm not going to mention parties of twos who got seated during this time). I told him to go ask if they had reservation, he dismissed me and said of course they did. I was upset but wanted to be cool-headed, so I said, just ask because I overheard at least 1 big party came in and got seated 20 mins ago. So he did, and one of them told him that she told them "five minutes" for their table, but he consoled me that she grossly underestimated the wait time for an open table without reservation, and if that were the case of seat opening up without reservation, she would have offered it to us first. Which I know was not true because, I sat right by the door and I knew what was going on. So I said, forget it, we're leaving because I'm not going to sit there in the cold nor will I make my kids sit in the cold because of some white, racist hostess decided that we weren't good enough to get seated in their precious restaurant. And god knows how long the food gonna take. So we walked off to another restaurant as the sun finally set behind us. So horrible the way we were treated, what was worst was my kids were put through it. So if she wasn't discriminated against us because we weren't white, then it must be because of our kids, which is even worst. What kind of heartless b!tch make little kids sit outside in the cold? read more
