Came here twice. Our first experience was better than our second time around. Food is better than average. My avocado toast was delicious and my kid enjoyed his pancakes. Our friends enjoyed their breakfast as well and they were decent portions. Service was fast and attentive as we sat outside on their patio. Came back thinking we'd get the same experience sitting inside. While the quality of the food was the same, we were a little dismayed with flies buzzing around us sitting indoors. Yum! We loved trying this classic spot as it's always pretty busy on a weekend and even weekday mornings can be poppin amongst the locals. No frills, great spot for your classic breakfast diner food with a twist on some of the classics. Just because I opted for not upscale. Does not mean the food is not delicious and the service is not wonderful. We got the eggs Benedict that the eggs were cooked perfectly! The potatoes were hot and the coffee was even hotter. I am so glad we came in about 1030 after the breakfast rush. And note that it says it closes at 1:30. On one side, the bar area with kitchen. Small tight space, but you can watch the magic happen on the grill. On the other side, seated table service. Good for small groups or if you're claustrophobic. Also a few tables outside along the store front. I've had a couple versions of their eggs Benedict. They serve a handful of varieties including traditional, crab cake or specialty versions like the Cardiff Crack tri tip or carnitas Benedict. On my most recent visit, I tried the "surf & turf" which is a combo of one Cardiff Crack Benedict and one crab cake Benedict. Both incredible since I couldn't decide! Previously I had the carnitas bene. Also bursting with flavors. They have a couple different hollendaise sauces to go with the various versions. All complement the meal accordingly. What was really cool was to watch the guys work behind the counter. As mentioned, it's a tight space behind the counter, but it's all orchestrated like a fine tuned machine. I don't know how this diner is for lunch, but I will say that their breakfast is legit. I had the best carnitas eggs benedict ever, I almost licked the plate clean. It was delicious and perfectly cooked. The egg yolk porn really made me excited to consume every bite. My friend got an omelette dish which looked really good too, but I didn't care, because I was too busy savoring every bite of my carnitas eggs benedict. This place is a simple diner, great service, our waitress was wonderful and very helpful and very sweet. If you want a non-pretentious, no frills meal, this place is it. I've been coming to this restaurant for years! Great spot for dates and going with friends! Staff is always nice and food comes out relatively quickly! We've only had one or two experiences here where things weren't perfect. Food is always 10/10 here. Portland piggy pile or the hillbilly are must eats (quite possibly the best breakfast in Encinitas). Parking can be a little tricky because of how many people coming to the area for business so finding a spot can be very tedious and annoying. I went here after my triathlon over the weekend to carb up and wow it hit the spot once again. Love this place and will continue to be a local here for years to come. Best Pancakes In North County When you walk in you immediately feel like you belong here. Our server was more than friendly, she made you feel like a regular or like you were seeing an old friend. The decor is the cutest, I love that it's an actual diner not a fake made to look like a diner, diner. Ya know? The food... the food is DELICIOUS! Granted Ive only tried the pancakes, waffles, and French toast.. but they were all amazing! I've recommended this place to family and they tried other things on the menu and all raved about them. I love that you can order single pancakes of all the flavors and it isn't some ridiculous price. It makes eating here so enjoyable. The second time my bf and I went we got one of every pancake it felt like haha each one tasted even better than the last. While in the San Diego area, I decided to get take out from the 101 Diner in Encinitas. As the name suggests, the 101 Diner is right off the 101 or the Pacific Coast Highway. Atmosphere: Right now, California is limited to outdoor seating. The tables at the 101 Diner are evenly spaced, and the employees are wearing masks. The 101 Diner seating includes a sidewalk patio, streetside patio, and back deck. The decorations are a rustic beach vibe. It's known as an old-fashioned American breakfast & lunch joint with surf decor, and that is exactly what it looks and feels like. It looks like a total locals place and has the local diner feeling but on a beach. It's located on the main street, so not the typical metallic diner but a Mainstreet restaurant. Coffee: The coffee was alright. There wasn't anything unique or unusual, but it tasted decent. I've come to realize to go coffee may just never taste as good as sitting in a restaurant and enjoying coffee. Food: The 101 Diner menu has everything you picture a diner to have. There is plenty of omelet and egg options, pancakes, and even banana Nutella stuffed french toast. They have the typical options like sandwiches, burgers, and salads for lunch, but this is one of the first diners I've seen to have chili! You can see the full diner menu here. I decided to order a BLT on rye bread. I decided to go with the avocado option. It came with french fries. The BLT was excellent, and I liked the avocado add. I've been having a lot of BLTs lately, but I liked the uniqueness of the avocado. In the meal, the french fries were what really shined. (Which is hard because the sandwich was so good). The fries were thin and slightly crispy. Some of the best french fries I've had to date. In all, a great meal, and I would order it again. I've sat in the indoor dining area and at the counter, and like both; they also have sidewalk seating and a patio area out back. I can't believe I've lived in Encinitas for about 15 years and am only getting around to eating here until now. Driving by, the 101 Diner is pretty nondescript, another shop lost among a stretch of tourist traps and coffee bars. So many times we've been dazzled by the allure of Honey's or the flash of the Lumberyard and passed this diner right on by. And if you ever do poke your head inside, you're treated to tacky 50's decor, white and black checkers with red trim. It's reminiscent of a greasy, local spoon in some flyover state located next door to the world's largest (*insert 'nondescript' noun here*). Not that I don't want to have my picture taken with an authentic cardboard cut-out of Hawaiian Elvis, I just don't think the competition for largest ball of twine can be all that cutthroat when what they have on the pedestal is about the size of a softball. I mean, seriously, I have tumors bigger than that lodged in the walls of my colon. I think I'm drifting off-topic ... where was I? Oh, yeah, the 101. For the most part, the food is about what you'd expect; nothing too fancy or straying into the realm of imaginative. My first visit, I had an alright breakfast burrito, not as salty or as greasy as it should have been, making the flavors a bit boring. And the fruit cup alongside, while thankfully being devoid of melon, had cut up chunks of apple in it which was ... I dunno why, but it's just wrong. My second trip, however, I noted that they actually have an extensive Eggs Benedict selection which had been expanded with a new page of specials that day. I ordered the 1/2 Slow-Cooked Carnitas with Avocado & Chipotle Hollandaise w/MINI ACAI Bowl Combo. This was light step up from the month before. The Benedict itself was well constructed, all the parts perfectly cooked and plated nicely. Flavor-wise, I would have preferred that the carnitas had been crisped up on the grill before serving. And the hollandaise, while mildly smoky with chipotle seasoning, lacked any heat that should have burned at least mildly on the tongue. The real hero of my breakfast was that Acai bowl. This may be blasphemous among my California brethren, but this was my first such bowl ever. And I know that getting one at a diner instead of a specialty shop may border on the insane, but what hit the table was cool, crisp, and delicious. With coconut, granola, strawberries, kiwi, pineapple, and mango, the fruit assortment was impressive and altogether delicious. Honestly, I have no idea if I'll ever come back here for another meal, but the 101 has certainly made me crave trying acai bowls everywhere else. My wife has sample a few of their omelettes and never complained, though she has expressed dissatisfaction in the blandness of their potatoes. Again, it's food that borders on the adequate for anyone hungry for something familiar. Nothing worthy of coming to town for, but definitely a better way to spend your meal over Denny's or Rimel's. read more

Came here after a short hike with my cousin! We were seated at the bar and the chefs took our orders! I got a corned beef hash Benedict and my cousin got a Greek omelette! It was so awesome getting to watch our order being cooked right in front of us! The service was very friendly and our food was piping hot! The Benedict was well seasoned and great! My favorite part was the hash browns that came with our orders! They were crispy and very tasty. My eggs were cooked exactly to order, toast was nicely buttered. But the entire meal was lukewarm at best, the potatoes greasy, bacon limp because I guarantee it sits in a metal container on the counter and they just warm it through per order. My biggest issue with the restaurant was the overall lack of cleanliness. I'd recommend closing and spending two days taking everything down, deep cleaning the place, repainting the walls, cleaning every nook and cranny and opening back up. Also, while it's California and cool outside, leaving the doors open is an open invitation to the copious amount of flies that want a taste of my food.
