What went well? EVERYTHING! What a find in Encinitas. Sunday morning 9 o'clock. Got lucky and found parking right on the street, walked in and got a seat at the bar. Alejandro waited on me and what a treat. So nice with lots of smiles for everybody who was there. And the food? Epic. Being able to order a small eggs Benedict and have an açai and fruit bowl pairing was perfect. I wanted to try it all and I was able to. The chipotle Carnitas eggs Benedict was to die for. Not too spicy, but so flavorful. The Carnitas was made perfectly. Lots of crunch. Avocado inside was tasty. The açai bowl was huge with lots of fresh fruit on it. And granola as well...I will be back for sure.

Who doesn't love a good diner? Peek inside and the place looks like it stepped out of the distant past, maybe the 1950s or the 1960s. Surely they are masters at greasy bacon and eggs, day old coffee, and probably little else. Wrong. Very wrong. This place may look a little ordinary from the outside but there is nothing ordinary about it. It may look like a classic diner inside but it does not sling food like an old diner. The menu is well-written and the food is high quality, excellent, and borderline gourmet. Do not order eggs, bacon, and toast here. Swing for the cheap seats. We tried the Ham, Avocado and Tomato Eggs Benedict. The hollandaise sauce was fantastic. If I didn't care about remaining somewhere under 350 pounds, I would return every Saturday and eat my way through every single eggs benedict concoction on the menu and there are many such benedict creations from which to choose. The Banana Nutella crepe, with "whip" cream (not "whipped," apparently, we're gentle with our cream here, folks), was decadent. If you like your breakfasts on the sweet side, you will enjoy this one. The Tres Porkitos omelet (made with ham, bacon, sausage, and cheese) was hearty and just as good as it sounds. The breakfast potatoes were very nicely done but could have used a little more seasoning. There is a salt shaker (and numerous hot sauces) on the table for just these types of emergencies. Do NOT leave here without getting a freshly-made biscuit with butter and honey on the side. You have made a serious error in judgment if you leave without getting one of these. Even the freshly-squeezed orange juice was delicious. Our server was wonderful. No complaints. They have dining inside or on the patio. Encinitas is a delightful community. While I loved the old school diner feel inside, you cannot go wrong with the people watching outside on one of our almost always sunny days in So Cal. If you live here, you already pay the Sunshine Tax so get your money's worth and sit outside, if you can. 10 stars.

Was looking for breakfast and wanted to give this place a try. Their food was amazing. The biscuit is home made and there was plenty of food for the price. The blueberry pancakes and the tri tip eggs Benedict were really great. Would definitely recommend coming here!

I don't know why I haven't reviewed this place before. I've been here plenty of times and I LOVE it! It's a pretty small old school diner inside, but I usually choose to eat outside on the sidewalk or 'street' tables because the weather is nice and people watching is fun. This last time I got what I usually get - a half order of shaved ham and avocado Benedict with jalapeño cilantro hollandaise along with the mini (ha ha) açaí bowl, and I added an order of potatoes. I swear I would get this as my last meal if I knew it was coming. SO GOOD! The hollandaise has so much flavor, the egg is perfectly poached, and the avocado is fresh. The açaí bowl is amazing, with more of a solid scoop rather than the saucy version, and they top it with a variety of in season fruits - kiwi, peaches, strawberries, bananas, blueberries. The mini size is very hearty, but if I were to eat it alone, which I never do, I would size up. The servers there are very friendly, but also no nonsense and very efficient. I just really like the whole vibe. If you're there during busy times and there is a line just wait. You'll be glad you did!

I grew up in San Diego and went to high school in North County but for some reason, I had never been to The 101 Diner. During my last visit home, I decided to change that and stopped in for the first time. I was pleased to see it's a traditional Classic American diner with very fast service, a large menu, and fair prices. Inside is pretty small, which adds to the homey atmosphere. They don't have a ton of seating options but the lines here never seem to be as long as Encinitas Café across the street. Parking in this part of Encinitas is pretty easy because if there's not a space available right on the street, it's easy to find one in the neighborhood behind the businesses. Our waitress was very polite and everything that we ordered arrived shortly after we placed the order. Being a fan of Seaside Market I saw that they have a new Eggs Benedict dish called the Cardiff Crack Benedict, which has the famous tri-tip so I had to order that. I was very pleased with it and the eggs were done just as I like them. I would definitely order it again and would recommend. I plan to be back again next time I am in town.

We decided to dine in closer to closing time. Seemed quite busy trying to wind down and clean up. The service was good, and we got our food pretty quickly after ordering. Eggs tasted fresh, french toast was classically done exactly how I enjoy it. We also tried the banana Nutella pancake. I was surprised by this, they actually mix the banana in with the pancake batter rather than just using it as a topping. This made for a lighter, more refreshing pancake. I really enjoyed it as pancakes can be a little too sweet for me. Highly recommend this spot for a good breakfast! I will say there were a lot of flies and the floors didn't look to be swept at all but I'm guessing this was because they were about to clean up before closing...

Never have had a bad meal here. In the heart of Encinitas, 101 Diner has everything you would ever want and more. I LOVE their breakfast that typically comes with crispy potatoes. The staff is so nice and friendly which is their calling card along with the excellent food. You can sit outside and enjoy the people watching or inside where you are almost transported back to a simpler time. Yes you are reminded of the present when you see a surcharge for eggs due to what is happing today, but you also look around and see connections. People talking and conversing. Chatting with the staff and ordering verbally. No iPad in sight and it's a delight!

Delicious breakfast, friendly staff, great menu, solid choice for great food. It's an older restaurant, kinda small, can get busy during the normal rush but I really like this place, it's the quintessential hometown diner. I had the Cardiff Crack Tri-tip omelette (cheese, peppers, onions, mushrooms) and home fried potatoes. This place knows how to make the real fluffy omelette with great tasting fill and perfect home-fried potatoes. I thought I was in a Midwest diner. One of the best breakfast spots In Encinitas! I left full, content, happy and wanting to return.

Was super excited to try this place out for the first time, but unfortunately ended up being disappointed. Food was COLD. Flavor was good but still it being cold outweighed the flavor for me. Everything from the pancakes to the omelette to the chicken & waffle was cold (I had to wait 10 additional minutes for my waffle but that thankfully was hot & good!) Pancakes were also thin. Wish they were fluffier. If the food was hot, I'd recommend coming here. However you can probably find better spots nearby.

Went here for our breakfast before returnning back to phoenix. Got outdoor seating and had pleasant time. Here are my takes: Food/Drinks: Overall it was decent. The beef meat was very chewy and maybe overcooked so I had to leave that too when it was recommended by server for being locally sourced and I decided to try. The menu is extensive so it was somewhat overwhelming to choose from. Service: There was a delay but overall no major setback during our dine-in. Ambiance: Great outdoor seating and that was the primary reason to stopped here for breakfast. Hygiene: Very small restroom and not the cleanest but overall it was decent. Price: Reasonably priced food and drinks. Nothing that was overpriced.

Food was okay. But he Service is what left a last impression. Only ID I could get on our server was cashier 15. But she AGGRESSIVELY forced my child into saying "please" after she had directly asked us for our order. It wasn't playful or lighthearted. Noone else at our table was requested to tell her "please" after their order. She more or less bullied my child. I was in complete shock, took a second to process her behavior. This took place yesterday. I do not recommend, the customer service was unacceptable. read more

We had breakfast here while camping at San Elijo State Beach. The food was sooo good! My husband got the peach waffle which was loaded with fresh peaches and I got the surf & turf benedict- 1/2 crab cakes/ 1/2 tri tip. I thought that tri tip on eggs Benedict would be weird but it is now my new favorite. The crabcakes were just ok. The coffee is good too. read more

Straight up old school diner but with new school menu items. I had the Cardiff crack Benedict and the shaved ham with avocado. Both were excellent. Perfectly cooked poached eggs, buttery hollandaise, salty meats = perfection. If I were to be hyper critical, the potato's were a bit bland but nothing a little salt couldn't fix. My kid had the strawberry pancake and it was also sublime. Tasted like a strawberry shortcake. read more

Food was good, service was horrible. Sat outside it was casual and not busy. Garden eggs Benedict and potatoes were delicious. My problem was with the waitress, she asked us if everything was okay initially once the food came and before we could even open our mouths to respond she's walking away, never brought waters I asked for, never came to refill coffee until after she brought check, never came back to check asked how things were or tell us there's an upcharge to split. Very rushed and rude, which is too bad considering it was a cozy, chill and yummy place. I wouldn't return. read more

This greasy spoon is an Encinitas institution and far be it for me to go against all the awesome feedback. They do a great job and their reviews definitely show it, so I'm just going to pile on top with another one. They're fast, inexpensive, tasty, and served by some super friendly staff. It's not exactly the most health conscious menu, but if you're eating at the 101 you've gotta just embrace it and enjoy. My advice if you're by yourself...post up at the bar on the north side of the restaurant, order a California omelet with their insanely good potatoes, and just take all the surroundings in. If you're new to the neighborhood like I am, it's a great way to get all the local gossip. Great spot overall, and I definitely see myself being a regular. read more

We've become regulars. Their food is consistently good. The people who work here are alert, fast, courteous and seem to like their jobs. Our kids love their side steaks. I love the fact that they allow me to order a kids meal for myself---I'm no longer the big eater I was before. It's kinda fun to sit right there at their counter and watch them cook. We also like to sit at their counter when they're running a wait for tables. The only downside here is the fact that they leave their front doors wide open. This brings in the flies. I'd buy them neon "Open" sign from Costco if they'd promise to close their front doors. read more

Best Eggs Benedict in the county hands down. Lots of hollandaise. My son told me today that the bacon is better cooked than mine at home. Ouch! Really I love it when a restaurant can do breakfast better than Dad at home lol. Servers are always hard working and deserving of good tips. If you come on the weekend be prepared to wait, but for a late morning breakfast during the week it is quick to be seated. read more

Outstanding food!! Had the Cardiff crack Benedict and all I can say is wow! Perfectly cooked with top notch service! Great spot right on the PCH, don't let this gem pass you by, highly recommend this place. My wife had the surf n turf Benedict which was just as good and we split a tropical fruit crape. We will definitely be back, will probably need a bigger car to get us home though! read more

I arrived with my disabled son and his ADA certified service dog at 11:30am for lunch. It was busy and we stepped inside to leave our name. Before we could even enter completely, a waitress (middle-aged woman with light brown curly hair, who later said she was the manager) was shaking her head, passing us without stopping saying "no - outside! No dogs." I started to tell her this was an ADA service dog but she talked loudly over me saying "I don't have time to talk about a dog." I let her pass, went to the counter, and asked another employee if there was a manager or owner in the restaurant. That's when the waitress - still without stopping - said "that's me, that's me" and the other employee waved her off as if he would "handle it." He said "what do you need?" and I said "we'd like to have a lunch, and I'm not sure why we're being treated like this. It's against the law." He just said "we're really busy." I said ok, well how long is the wait?" "I don't know." I was a waitress for years - being busy is no excuse for treating anyone, especially a child, with such disdain. We left, of course. My son was already embarrassed and I wasn't going to get into an argument in front of him. We face questions and even challenges about my son's disability and service dog all the time. But we have NEVER been treated so rudely. It was infuriating, ignorant, and illegal. It's also just plain old ugly discrimination. Shame on this woman and this establishment. read more

This place is awesome! Delicious (and enormous) portions. Being from the east coast (hey, tri-state area!) diner culture is life and it's so refreshing to find any semblance of this in Socal. While this isn't a platinum monolith along the side of the highway like we do it back east, this charming spot with a huge menu will not disappoint! Big menu, good food, and big portions! I had the chipotle eggs benedict and it did not disappoint! My hubby had the corned beef hash and he was not impressed. ONLY BAD thing I noticed here was little fruit bugs flying around... Overall nice friendly service and I will be back to try more dishes. read more

I'm relocating for work. I chose this one because I'm craving for breakfast and I took my parents. Food: I really liked it. I ordered one of their specials, " Cardiff Egg Benedict" something like that. Service: it was great. Busy and only one waitress but it's cool. Waitress: out of 5 for being the best, I would rate her 4.5 lol. She's not the typical "goody" waitress but she would tell what's on her mind - which is good. She's not rude but she came really strong. I'm just not use to it. I like it when I asked for a pic and she said let's take the order first. After taking the order, I was waiting for her to forget it, but she didn't!! read more

I'm reluctant to give this a 5-star review, because I don't want it to get too popular. It's a total hidden gem. It looks like a greasy spoon, but it's seriously gourmet. The Cardiff Crack benny is off the charts. So is the tres porkitos omelet. There's nothing not to love. The people watching as you eat out front is also endlessly entertaining. 101 Diner has great atmosphere, food and service. They are easily my kids favorite place to go out for breakfast for good reason. Located off Coast Highway in the heart of Encinitas it's a great location to get a bite to eat and then explore. Parking can take a couple minutes on weekends during the summer which at most entails walking a block. Most of the time, I find parking on the street in front of the restaurant. The atmosphere is perfect beach diner. They have great indoor and outdoor seating. Outside, you can sit on the sidewalk in front of the store or the quieter back patio. The interior is decorated with a mishmash of beach memorabilia and art. Service has always been first class. At worst, it's been friendly and efficient. Regularly however, the staff makes you feel like you've come home and truly excels at service. The food from the kitchen is consistently excellent. It is always worth checking the daily specials on the chalkboard. They are often exceptional treats like their Asparagus Scramble. The standard menu always delivers too. Though I consider myself a surfer foremost, I don't go all gonzo over a place just because it's full of surf-related posters, boards and photos. If I wanted to see all that crap, I'd simply go to one of the many surf-shops in the area or spend some time in my garage. My purpose here was to eat and it being our first time, we opted for the whore-made crab cakes. They spell it "Ho-made" but I'm sure this was just a ghetto-inspired spelling mistake. It sounded gross but our waitress assured us they were made in the kitchen by the cook and not by any whores that they knew of. We were relieved. The OJ was fresh, service, restroom, dining area all proletarian-basic and you knew that if Hwy 101 didn't exist, neither would the diner. Such is life in these small beach-towns. The crab-cakes eggs Benedict were good and a little on the pricey side @$12. No, they'd never be good enough to get Donald Trump in, even with ho-made items, but they hit the spot and we left sated especially with the savory fried potatoes as a side. The waitress was outgoing and attentive and it is because of her we'd return, not necessarily any "Ho-made" anything. And somehow I doubt the practitioners of the Self-Realization Fellowship ("Swami's") just down a block are regulars here but it's obviously very popular with the other locals, even some surf rats. I loved loved loved my breakfast here! I came with a friend and had a breakfast meeting and it was one of the best breakfast I have ever had. After studying the photos from Yelp, I easily made my decision. I looked all over the menu and didn't find it, but ended up finding my benedict on the specials menu. It was call the Cardiff Crack Benedict.... named correctly, this is a additive benedict. Made with tri-tip from Seaside Market and topped off with a cilantro and jalapeno hollandaise sauce, this was magic in my mouth! So delicious and I can't wait to come back! read more

We saw the egg benedict pics on yelp and came to this place on a Sunday at 11.30. Waited 5 mins and got seated. They have outdoor seating as well. We had ham benedict with avacado and cilantro and greek omelette minus the greek in it(feta and olives out). Both were super delicious. Our food cane super hot. That made it more delicious. Our server was the nicest. The thing i liked the most was it wasn't noisy there at all. Great food. Great fresh oj. Typical diner coffee. Would recommend this place anytime. read more

Amazing place all around for breakfast. We went here on a weekday and had no wait at all. I have seen this place get pretty packed on the weekends, so be ware. I get an old school diner vibe here from the ambiance as well as the staff. I got the chicken machaca omelette that comes with salsa, sour cream, guacamole with a side of their special hash browns. The portions are extremely large and definitely filling. There was a lot of meat inside of the omelette and not too much fillers. Also got the amazing and tasty Baked Apple Pancake. This was packed with great flavor and definitely satisfied our morning sweet. This is something you should definitely share with someone or a few people. We had the waitress treat it as our dessert and bring it out fresh after we ate our food. Parking is hit or miss depending on the day you go. My wife got the Hot Mess Fries and was disappointed not only in the flavor, but also in the misleading advertising. On the menu it specifically said that there was bacon in the fries, but in fact what they put on the fries was either chunks of ham or "Canadian bacon" (which as we all know is a very different thing from "bacon"). If they were or of regular bacon, the kitchen should have told the server this so he could have asked her if she wanted ham as a substitute. And, of they always use ham instead of bacon, them the menu needs to be changed to reflect that.

This is my favorite breakfast spot in north county!! The vibe is awesome, very laid back and comfortable. It seems like everyone who works there is one big family. One of the servers even carried around her 10 month old as she worked, so cute! Not only is it a fun place to be but the food is delicious. We sat at the counter today because (as usual) there was a wait for a table. They have some seating out front, inside at booths or a breakfast bar, and out back on a patio. We had Sabrina as our server who is always very friendly and attentive! The orange juice is always fresh and delicious so of course I had one of those.. then I ordered my all-time favorite, shaved ham eggs benedict... with jalepeno/cilantro in the hollandaise sauce, and crispy potatoes on the side. My other half ordered his favorite, the chorizo scramble and tortillas. We ALSO ordered an acai bowl to split, AND an apple pancake for dessert.... however this isn't for the faint of heart... we eat a lot. Awesome food awesome atmosphere. Little gem. It's small inside, but packs a huge punch! Expect a little bit of a wait time on the weekends for breakfast but the wait is well worth it! They have a few tables outside and our party enjoyed having our breakfast outside in sunny California. The food was GREAT! The 3 of us all decided to get something different and we all sampled each other's. Everything was delicious. The fresh fruit bowl over sorbet with fresh granola was amazing.. the biscuits and gravy were amazing.. the corned beef hash, the eggs Benedict.. all amazing. Trust me when I say you won't be disappointed after visiting the 101 diner. It's also located on a nice strip with a bunch of cute little shops where you can do some shopping after you eat. When I was a little girl my Mom & Dad and I would get in the car every Sunday and just randomly drive out of town. It was a tradition in my Dads family. We would stop at whatever restaurant or attraction that came our way. It was fun. Well my Dad passed away last year and this weekend I felt like going for a Sunday drive as a way to connect with Dads spirit. I headed up the coast and the 101 caught my eye. It was the best breakfast I've had in years. Everything from the coffe, fresh squeezed juice my eggs all cooked perfectly. I'm so gad I happened upon this little gem of a diner. Wait was long. Mediocre food and portions weren't that great. Had some buddies in town I took here and they had good reviews so thought we'd try it out. Ill probably go elsewhere next time considering the price vs food quality and portion. I got the eggs benedict which was good but the fruits didnt look so fresh that came with it as a side. My hubby and I took the Coaster and made a stop at the Encinitas station. We decided to eat here at 101 Diner because of the good reviews on yelp. It was VERY GOOD! The menu is ample with dishes and we ended up having the waffle brunch with eggs and bacon. I had the Pastrami Sandwich. Both dishes were very tasty! We would like to return and try other dishes. Love the spicy hollandaise on the Eggs Benedict here! Fresh and made from scratch, this place is the bomb! If you go on weekends, plan to wait, weekdays you can usually walk in and grab a table. Service is just so-so, they seem to spend alot of time visiting, but the food is great. read more

It was in what looked like slices of Texas Toast bread. The food was good and glad we didn't give up on the parking situation. They are still cash-only and thankfully an ATM inside. Two of us ordered BLT sandwiches with avocado and side salad with balsamic vinaigrette, and my husband ordered the Mexicali egg scramble with a side of beans, my father-in-law ordered a potato scramble substituting grits for the potatos. The food was ready in 15 minutes. The BLTs were scrumptious , bacon super crispy. The grits* scramble was also delicious. My husband was disappointed with the Mexicali, particularly that it was already lukewarm when it arrived. He wished he'd gotten the scramble which apparently was still hot upon arrival. My daughter was the one who chose T's Cafe for our celebration, excited to share a place she loved with the family. Unfortunately, what should have been a special family meal turned into one of the worst restaurant experiences I have had in years. We arrived at 11:37 AM and were quoted a 20 to 30 minute wait. We were not seated until 12:29 PM, nearly an hour later. I understand holidays are busy, but quoting a wait time that is off by almost double sets the tone for a disappointing experience. Unfortunately, the service only deteriorated from there. After being seated, it took 10 minutes to receive water, 20 minutes before our server Leslie took our drink order, approximately 30 minutes before our food order was taken, and 45 minutes after being seated before drinks arrived. Even then, the drinks were delivered separately, about five minutes apart. Our meals arrived roughly an hour after being seated, and once again, the three dishes were delivered separately several minutes apart. Long waits on Father's Day are frustrating, but understandable. What was not understandable was the complete lack of accountability when our order was delivered incorrectly. My daughter specifically requested wheat bread on her sandwich for health reasons and was served sourdough. My son ordered a fried chicken sandwich and instead received a chicken fried steak. When Leslie finally returned, approximately 15 minutes after our meals had been delivered, I politely pointed out the mistakes. Her response was shocking. She dramatically flipped through her handwritten notes and insisted that my daughter had ordered sourdough and that we were mistaken. She acknowledged that my son's order was incorrect but made no effort whatsoever to correct it. Instead, while I was in the middle of asking a question, she simply turned around and walked away. At this point, we had already requested water from two other employees because Leslie had disappeared for extended periods. Throughout most of the meal, our water glasses remained empty. No refills were offered, and no additional beverage service was provided. When we finished eating, Leslie still had not returned. We ultimately had to ask a busser for our check. When she finally brought it, I asked for her name. She ignored me and walked away. I asked again. No response. I asked a third time, louder because it was clear I was being ignored. After paying, I asked two employees if a manager was available. They informed me that Pam had apparently left about 20 minutes earlier without informing anyone and was nowhere to be found. I then asked those employees for the server's name and was told it was Leslie. At that moment, Leslie emerged from the bar area and began raising her voice at me, repeatedly calling me "cruel." Every attempt I made to speak was interrupted by her continuing to raise her voice and repeat the accusation. This occurred in front of other guests at approximately 2:05 PM. Owners, specifically the Paymard family, I strongly encourage you to review your security footage from approximately 2:05 PM on Father's Day. This interaction should be used as a training opportunity because no guest should ever be treated this way. What makes this especially disappointing is that we have dined here at least a dozen times over the years. We intentionally support T's Cafe because it is a family-owned, women-owned business, and we have always appreciated supporting a local establishment with those values. In fact, I still think the biscuits and gravy are excellent, and I enjoyed my patty melt. However, one employee completely ruined what should have been a special Father's Day meal with my kids. My daughter, who had proudly chosen this restaurant to make the day special, left feeling embarrassed and responsible for how the morning had unfolded. That is not a feeling any child should carry home on a holiday. Poor service can be forgiven. Long waits on a holiday can be forgiven. Mistakes happen. Being blamed for the restaurant's mistakes, ignored repeatedly, denied basic service, and then publicly berated by a server is unacceptable. After years of being customers, we will not be returning. I will also be sharing this experience with others because no guest should be treated with this level of disrespect. A restaurant's food may bring people in, but customer service determines whether they come back, and in this case, it guaranteed that we won't.
