History: began as a school project in University of Houston with a mission to recreate the experience of eating in the streets of Mexico City. They began operating from a trailer in the summer of 1996, selling tacos in a parking lot. Two years later it moved to it's current location. They have tons of decorations and it's very well appointed. Many of the tables have a skeleton in one of the chairs so you can dine with the dead if you like. Grab a menu at the Alto and then order at the counter to the right of it. No need to Alto (stop). Cashiers are very nice (a sign says $14/hr pay for the gig plus free tacos). The menus have descriptions of what many of the Spanish words mean so don't worry if you can't remember like me. We tried the Assad and the sampler tacos. Both very good. Chips with half salsa and half guacamole. The salsa is warm. The chips on the thicker side. But very crispy and fresh tasting. They don't sell queso though. Blasphemy. I love queso. That's my only complaint. You can get green and red salsa (not the same as cones with the chips) at the toppings bar along with pico de gallo (tomato/onion/cilantro/jalapeño mix). Tres leches was tall and pretty good too. Not like churrascos good. But good nonetheless. And the Mexican candy drink was a nice change from getting a margarita. read more

UPDATE: spoke with one of the managers a few days later and he apologized profusely. He gave me the option of a refund (as it was never processed by the very rude cashier) or coming in for an order of tacos and tres leches on him. Since it was never about the money but the way that lady treated us, we decided to go in and give it a second try and let's just say we were not disappointed! The food was very flavorful and their tres leches is probably one of the best we've had! We will definitely be back again! We decided to order take out to support this business during COVID. The website said the food would be ready in 20 minutes. Once we arrived, informed us it would take about an hour. The pick up process was very unorganized, there was no social distancing and no sanitization. Once we got home with order after a long wait, we realized we were missing half the order. We called to get a refund for the things we were missing but the girl put me on hold and then hung up on me. I tried calling back several times and she continued to hang up on me! She finally picked up when I called from a different number. She then said the entire order was refunded and then hung up. They created an event that was a family environment but unfortunately, they have adult videos showing on their TVs with naked woman and murder scenes. They made us wait an hour and a half for the kids event to start even though everytime we asked the time changed. First it was at 7:00pm, then 7:30pm, then "in 20 minutes" which would've been 8pm. Paying customers without kids had to stand to eat because all the families waiting were sitting down waiting for the event. The food was okay but the set up is ridiculous. Everything was separate. Everything. Even the damn whipped cream. Thank God I had some change in the bottom of my purse or my benuelos would've been plain. I placed a large order of tacos for cinco de Mayo and the tacos were so so. They lacked some flavor and they were really skimpy on the onions & cilantro. I've definitely had way better. My friend went to pick up the order and she called me upset and frustrated. They wanted to charge extra for salsa. I decided to try them again and ordered the taquitos to go. They were really good! I ordered them go. I got them with the salsas and cheese on them which made them a bit soft but that's due to them being packed to go. I took a bit while sitting in my car and it was delicious.....I ended up finishing them in the parking lot. Lol I'll be back for the taquitos....I'll skip the tacos lol read more

I have been a frequent customer at 100% Taquito for many many years and I am so glad they are still around and their food has not changed. Great tasting tacos and tortas! My favorite items on the menu has got to be their chicken mole con arroz. I'm picky when it comes to mole. It has to be just perfect and theirs is one of the best! It has great flavor and the right amount of spice. I could HEAPINGS of it. Also... BEST SALSA in houston! Spicy and full of flavor. Would eat it every day if I could. The decor is unappealing and looks more like a haunted house instead of a restaurant. It dd not used to be like this. It was clean and neat. Now I do not barely want to go there because it is so junky snd unappealing. The music is also blaring like if it was a nightclub. You can't hold a conversation over this loud distasteful rap/ reggaton music. The women are either nakid or wearing gstrings in sll the videos. There is all kinds of gyrating, etc in these videos. Cool spot! Fun decor, great Mexican food. Easy parking. Had the pastor torta. The bread was crispier than I expected, but still good. I really enjoyed the quesadillas, which are more like tacos with melted cheese than quesadillas we typically think of in the US. Prices were very reasonable. They've got a good variety of beverages including alcoholic beverages. The grapefruit Paloma was delicious! They've got a salsa station that was fun to try. Great casual fun food joint! read more

Give it to me greasy, messy and tastey. Post conference, my crew and I had a hunger. As always indecision ensued. And then, a brilliant idea occured. 100% Taquito. The journey began. We arrived to find the front end under construction. A gorgeous pergola is halfway up. Gotta come back for a happy taco hour. In we went. First, my ignorance left my surprised that tacos and taquitos are apparently used interchangeably. Always delighted to learn new things. I went with a Taco de Asada (Beef taco) in corn tortilla. 3 for under $6. Meat was marinated well, fell right apart. I also ordered the Quesadillas Al Pastor (Pork and Pineapple) in a flour tortilla. Also comes as triplets. My review: Dayum son. Good flavors, good quantity, and again under $6. My inner scrooge loves a full below at a low price. I'm down for another round. It is true that even though the decorations are awesome, having storage in two corners right next to the tables is an eyesore. The food did not stand out. I thought it would be really good but I visit food trucks that are better. Hopefully one day the owner will take more pride and hide or cleanup the messy corners. My oh my! You guys have beat the game! 100% Taquito is located in a part of town where you'd expect any "Mexican" restaurant to be actually Tex Mex catering to the gringo palate. But this place has managed to sneak an authentic taqueria into the heart of Gringoland! Normally to get such authentic food, you'd have to visit a side of town where the residents are of the same culture as the food. Not here! Tacos de pollo en salsa mole? Flautas? Both green and red salsa that are both actually spicy? Staff who speak Spanish? OMG what?? The disguise comes in the form of a Montrose-esque art house feel. Strange deco that doesn't quite fit, yet does. This place neither looks nor sounds like a taqueria. But that's exactly what it is. I see you 100% Taqueria. This is a great place to get pretty authentic Mexican taquitos (as in small tacos and not the Tex-Amex rolled up taquitos). My friends who are Hispanic gave their stamp of approval! I got the taco sampler which comes with chicken tinga, chicken mole, and carne asada tacos. I was feeling extra hungry so I also ordered carne asada tacos. Each order comes with three tacos so needless to say I was very full after. You may find cheaper tacos at a taco truck, but for the area, the tacos were an excellent value for how great they were. read more

100% Taquito is what I grew up eating, and I have fond memories of my parents bringing home boxes of tacos and quesadillas on weekday nights. It's more Mex than Tex Mex, and reasonably priced, though you can find better bargains from a truck. I revisited on my trip to Houston a couple weeks ago and was generally pleased. The chips and salsa remain essential; the red sauce certainly isn't blistering, but it builds a nice heat as you eat, and your other options, especially the green, are also great. I did a taco sampler and my previous impressions were confirmed: the tinga, or spicy brisket, is the strongest among them. Simply delectable. The chicken and steak were a bit dry, but not too bad. I think upgrading to quesadillas is a good call here, and I would also recommend their al pastor. Their beverage program is great here-- they do a strong frozen margarita. Soft drinks include Mexican coke and agua frescas. I always get the horchata which is so lovely. The decor is cool; feels like being in a Mexican plaza with fake storefronts and stalls. It gets pretty busy here during weekday lunch as well as dinner given the nearby office workers, but it's never too long of a wait. Service is polite and attentive. read more

I actually hate writing this review. This place has been a favorite of my family and me for over twenty years, since we moved to Houston in 2001. The food is so unique, fresh and absolutely outstanding.....still is! But over the pat four to five years the facility is gone in a bad direction. In a word, it's filthy. The walls, the floors, the trash cans, look like they haven't been cleaned in YEARS. The bathrooms......I can't even. So, needless to say, something is very wrong here, and it's a shame. I wish I had the money to buy the place....I'd give everyone there a raise, clean it up and restore some pride in the operation. read more

The food is really good and I'd happily give this place a 5* because of their food. The packing of the food on the other hand is dismal. If you're using a delivery service, I'd suggest protecting yourselves and either picking up the food yourselves or ordering from some other place (most places seal the plastic bags). If you want to try a mix of the best tacos, get the Taco Sampler, it comes with one Asada Taco (beef fajita), one Tinga Taco (spicy chipotle brisket), and one Pollo con Mole Taco (chicken mole). The best one is the mole taco! Be sure to get everything on corn tortillas. Each order comes with three small tacos for anywhere between $4-$6 so it's super inexpensive. Service is quick, and the atmosphere is so authentic! Try their reduced sugar margarita - It tastes the way a margarita should (without all of that fake flavoring!) Drinks are also inexpensive. Probably one of my favorite taco joints in Houston because of the ambiance, extensive menu, and low prices. I typically order pastor or mixtos tacos of quesadillas, and I highly recommend both! The pastor is very delicious and can be ordered with or without pineapples. The mixtos comes with chicken tinga, chicken mole, and beef. I adore all three. The tinga is super juicy, the mole is very flavorful, and the beef has a great texture and flavor. I'm also very excited about the dessert menu, and can't wait to work my way through all of the items. I got Tres Leches with strawberries during my last visit. This Tres Leches is acclaimed as Houston's best. While I'm unsure if I agree because it was on the sweeter and heavier side as far as Tres Leches goes, it was definitely a treat! 100% taquito is absolutely cute on the inside. It references the aesthetic of Mexico City street food. Or so I am told. The cute taxi model in the middle is adorable. The food tasted fine. The salsa bar did not have a lot of variety like most other places do. Overall, the food tasted fine but it wasn't anything memorable or something that would make me want to come back. Too bad it doesn't stay open late because it would be perfect for a post night out munching spree. The tostada de asada (beef) had a funky smell to it. I am not sure how they prepared it but it was not the most appetizing to me. The addition of the salsa verde from the salsa bar along with pico de gallo and lime really helped make it edible for me. The mole tacos were fine but I don't think they had enough seasoning to pair well with the chocolate sauce. The chips and salsa were not my favorite. The chips tasted better with the drippings from my food rather than they did with the salsa. I found the salsa to be overwhelmingly strong and a little bit on the muy caliente side of my PICA scale. I will probably come back and try their quesadilla to make the final call on whether I like this place or not. IMO I think I may have been too adventurous getting mole from a street food inspired place. But maybe I just don't know what it should taste like and don't have an appreciation for it. read more

Wow, was this place busy at 2pm on a Saturday! Little parking to be had, and a pretty packed inside. Along with that, it wasn't all cleaned up. I guess we caught the tail end of lunch. The place is very unique and cute with its Mexican street scene decor and car and half car for decoration. Futbol played on the TVs, too, and the volume wasn't intrusive. I had the #6 combo, which included mole, tinga, and asada on corn tortillas all for under $5. It wasn't as tasty as the Taco Guild in Phoenix, but the tacos there are also $4-5 EACH. 100% Taquito was a total steal to get three tacos for so little, and they were good, basic tacos, too. The meat was tender and flavorful. I did have an issue with the tinga taco pretty much exploding in my hand when I bit in, because it was so juicy, but fortunately it didn't get on my clothes. The mole had a great, deep flavor. I really loved the fresh tortillas, too. That's become my hallmark of a really good, authentic taco shop. I did feel like I wanted a little more to the tacos, some texture variety, something to give it more of a boost. We shared chips and guacamole. Those were kinda mediocre. I visited here with some coworkers during lunch. There's plenty of space and seating inside, even during the rush hour of weekday lunch. You order at one counter and pick up from another, which is smart because less people are standing around in the way of you ordering or picking up. I ordered the beef fajita quesadilla, which actually were shaped like 3 flour tacos. I didn't mind at all. The flavor was good and the meat was tender. I was able to add a few veggies to my food from the self-serve salsa bar. I'd definitely try this place again. The only downside would probably be parking. The restaurant shares the strip center with multiple businesses, so it was a bit packed during lunch in the parking lot. I would suggest either arriving early to beat the crowd or afterwards to let the crowd move out. read more
