I called #1 Nails on Friday to check if they had space for two walk-in appointments later in the afternoon. They did, so my friend and I headed over. The first thing I noticed was that the plastic liner in the pedicure chair basin was replaced between guests, which was reassuring. The male nail technician who did my pedicure did a great job with my toenails. However, the foot and leg massage was a bit odd due to the lack of pressure. When it came time for my manicure, I didn't see the technician clean the tools beforehand, so I'm not sure if it was done out of sight. He really dug into my fingers to cut my cuticles, which made me bleed and was uncomfortable. My nails were semi-short before I arrived, but he shaped the tips nicely. Unfortunately, he filed down the sides of my thumbnails so much that they became sore, which was disappointing. He had to go over my nails a few times with nail polish remover due to sloppy application. He was very nice and asked me a question to make conversation when doing my nails. My friend told me after we left the salon that the female nail tech she got cut her a little while doing her toenails. Overall, this visit wasn't awful, but I would probably go elsewhere in the future. read more

This place was amazing! They were pretty busy and it was a Saturday. They took my friend, my daughter and I as walk-ins. My friend and I were getting pedicures and my daughter waited to get her nails done. Now my daughter is 6 years old. She was surprisingly patient while waiting and when the young woman sat down my daughter asked if she could have a design painted. The lady asked her what she wanted and my daughter asked for a panda bear. I started to overrule that saying it was too complicated but the woman said she'd do her best. SHE DID AMAZING. She went above and beyond even adding sparkles and bamboo. They did beautiful work all around and I truly appreciate when people take great care to serve the little customers too! They're extremely well priced and that kind of service is priceless!!! read more

I wasn't able to get in as a walk in at my normal salon, and am going out of town- so I crossed the street to get my acrylics filled. My nail tech John paid a lot of detail to the shape of my nail points, but the gel paint job I got was something I could have done myself. Turns out I was going to anyway.... the stuff peeled straight off my thumb after I got out of the shower. Upon investigating further... there are some odd planes on the acrylics that made my nails look uneven and spoonish. It's not love, and not for $33 either. read more

#1 Nails is the best place I've found to get a shellac manicure in Winchester. As someone who loves having pretty nails but doesn't have the patience to paint them myself, I've scoured Winchester for a great nail salon. I've tried multiple salons in the area and #1 Nails has the best atmosphere and service I've found. I've also noticed that they seem to have many loyal customers who are regulars. The staff recognizes regulars and for some even make sure to remember names. I have never waited more than 5 minutes for someone to start on me, and they don't rush your nails. One of the best things about #1 Nails is they are SO affordable. A shellac manicure is $30 before tip, and it includes shellac removal, shellac application, cuticle care, paraffin, lotion, and a hand massage. Additionally, I have very long natural nails and both of the nail technicians I've had have made sure to put on three coats of the shellac so that my long nails don't break. I really appreciate this as this really ensures the longevity of my manicure. They do such a good job that I always have people asking me if I have acrylics. I'd definitely recommend giving them a shot! I personally would 100% recommend them, but if you go and don't like it, you're only out $30 anyway. read more

Although I had been a regular paying customer for months, I was subjected to an insulting and very hurtful incident of racism. For the most part, Emily did a good job with gel nails and was usually friendly. My last visit left me feeling disrespected, hurt and completely appalled! I always called to schedule an appointment with Emily. On Friday, March 6th, I called Emily who said she could see me at 5:45 or 6:00 and I agreed to arrive at 6:00. I arrived in the parking lot at 5:45, but did not go into the salon until 5:55. Emily never greeted me and kept working on her (white) customer's nails. After a phone call at 6:05, I told Emily I needed to run a 5-minute errand. I returned by 6:10 and Emily was still working on the customer. Finally, she started my services between 6:15 and 6:20. She was talking to her customer as she paid and she talked to a few other people, but she shut down with me. Other times she had been friendly, but she was not acting this way today. This was okay since I don't always like to make the small talk with nail techs. Around 6:45, a (white) woman walked in and Emily lit up like a Christmas tree. She greeted the woman, talked to her very cheerfully and jumped up to prepare her pedicure water while I waited. She ran in the back and stopped to chat with the woman before returning to my table. Emily was distracted from me as she kept turning her head to look at the woman. Without warning, she jumped up from me and ran over to check on the woman. I waited patiently until I saw her filing the woman's nails as if I was unimportant. I called Emily's name and pointed to the clock. She returned and started talking like she was so excited about this woman. Emily told me she needed to tend to the woman, so her sister-in-law (Linda) would finish my nails when she finished with her own customer. I reminded Emily that I had an appointment at 6:00 and it was after 7:00. She looked like a disappointed child and asked if I had a dinner date or something. I told her my appointment was at 6:00 and I anticipated being out by 7:00. Due to her making me wait 15-20 minutes, my stay was going to be closer to 90 minutes. She kept working on me while looking back at the woman. Then, between 7:15 and 7:20, Linda came over with a bottle of gel nail polish and stood waiting while Emily talked to her. Emily told me that she was telling Linda to finish up my nails. Again, I reminded Emily that she needed to finish me because my appointment was with her. My money was just as green as anyone else's, so why was I expected to be ok with this racial inferiority/superiority game Emily was attempting to play? I would not write this review if this was an isolated incident. Emily dumped me once before for a white customer, but I just didn't think much about it. In my years of going to nail salons, this was the first time this sort of thing happened. A) The 2nd white woman walks in and Emily attempts to dump me. Why didn't Emily ask Linda (or one of the other nail techs) to tend to this woman while she honored her commitment to perform my scheduled services? B) The 1st white woman had the pleasure of Emily finishing her nails while I waited 15-20 minutes past my appointment time. Why didn't Emily dump this woman on Linda (or one of the other nail techs), so I did not have to wait 15-20 minutes? Emily will never have to worry about being forced to accept my green money when her obvious preference is to cater to her white customers. My Black hands will never dial #1 Nails phone number again. Very unfriendly. The lady who did my pedicure only spoke to her co-worker in her native language. Never once did she speak directly to me. In fact, instead of asking me what I wanted for my pedicure, she handed me a laminated sheet with titles and prices. I opted for the $30 pedicure and callous removal. But I was charged $35. When asked about the difference in price I was told it was a "men's extra" charge. I ask why men get charged extra. I didn't get polish or had anything extra or special done, so why and I charged extra. They said that is the way it is. I asked her if her and a male friend came in and had the same exact meal at a restaurant and was charged extra for being a woman, would that be fair. She ignored me and walked away. I guess they don't see discrimination in their actions. read more

I will say I've been going to #1 Nails for over 12 years and yes, I have gone to other salons to try them out. While #1 nails doesn't offer a lot of the newer, cooler polishes or techniques as some of the others do, and yes, their services are $5 or more than some other salons in town-I keep going back to them for the reason of they know my taste/my style and it's consistent. So every time I am getting the same quality. I am offended by a previous post of "racism" and wish to commit briefly on that. While I'm not saying you are incorrect in your assumption-it isn't a "race" issue. As in over a decade I've been going there I have made appointments (never walked in.) I have had to sit for OVER an hour waiting for my appointment. Yes appt at 6pm, and literally sit waiting till after 7p while walk in's kept coming and being seated. I have made appt's w/ Emily (she is my girl actually) and walked in to be told "so...so take you okay.?" And then watch Emily leave the shop or would continue to work on someone else. So while you feel this is a "race" issue she waited on "white" people and ignored you......I am as you state "white" and have been a customer for 12 years....do you honestly think it's a "race" issue if "whites" have the same issue as you described? It's not race......it's the fact they are not managing their appointment times correctly-by accepting walk in's in between appointment times it runs everything behind. From my own observations, it goes both ways. I could tell you how many times I've been ignored because of my own skin color but I don't go around crying "racism" every time I don't get my way. That's when you decide to pull the big girl panties up and go some where else if you don't like a business. But please don't call it race-because it's happening to everyone-not just those of color. Over all-the salon does good work, and I've even left on occasion when I made an appointment and had to wait -it's all depends on if you have the patience to sit. I can however go around the corner to the other salon-get the same treatment and be out in exactly 50 minutes flat. So if I am in a hurry than I skip #1 nails. read more

Received a gift certificate to #1 Nails and I must say it was the best mani pedi I have had in Winchester. I have my own nails and I am in water and doing yard work, but this manicure lasted a full 2 weeks without any touching up. I am definitely changing to #1 Nails. They were friendly and the place was busy. Nothing fancy, but it worked for me. read more
