Beware to those who are carb monsters! Every year that I come back to Hong Kong, I try to make a trip to the Great Food Hall to stock up on Tim Tams. Yes, they do have Australia's favorite cookie along with any other chocolate/sweet treat that you can imagine from around the world. They have sushi, Italian eats and Japanese treats. They have fresh produce and ... did I say they have everything? They have everything. Literally all food treats that you can imagine. I might suggest not coming here when you're hungry otherwise you're going to be filling your cart with calorie intense foods. Heck, it gets overshadowed just in its neighborhood: an area loaded with iconic food heavyweights like Australia Dairy, Mak's Noodle, and Mak Mun Kee. I had already experienced Australia Dairy and I sure as heck wasn't interested in the hotel breakfast buffet. I came super early in the morning (still had some lingering jet lag) and the manager was really friendly, especially since I told him I was from the States. The dan tat is underrated and the price is quite good for a bakery in the area these days. I can't dispute $4 HKD (about 50 cents USD). The tart crust is ridiculously flaky and the egg filling has the right amount of sweetness. The walnut cookie was flaky and buttery. While I didn't take pictures of the store, all of the store pictures at the time of this writing are before recent renovations. The bakery is more roomy and contemporary inside.

After trying a few of their treats, it is now one of the few awesome bakeries that are in my active rotation for places I visit most. The place is dingy and trapped from another time. Jordan is no stranger to such establishments; it even evokes a pseudo San Francisco Chinatown vibe as many of the bakeries there are also stuck in the 90s. No matter, these places don't earn the love of the local crowd by looking pretty. They win everyone over with the food and in a big way. What got me hooked to start were their BBQ pork pastries, priced at a cool $4 each. They're flaky, crisp with just the right amount of pork. I would also give it up for their almond cookies, which are made fresh daily and taste heavenly. Buy an entire sack or tin for less than $15 and be happy. Other kudos goes out to their pineapple buns and hotdog buns -- satisfying in a pinch and easy to buy on the go. Lastly, the service deserves a mention. The women who operate this bakery from the morning to the afternoon are super friendly and I've seen them spare a bao or two for the less fortunate outside. It's a hard life out there and the compassion is hard not to recognize. That's the kind of service everyone could use.

If you enjoy tofu in general, you must try this place. You can probably guess based on the name that they make all their tofu products, including soybean milk which is also very popular. Fun fact! I have lived in Sham Shui Po until I was about 10 years old. Kung Wo is about 5 minute walk from our old apartment and I have no recollection of ever having the tofu here. It's my older sister's favorite tofu place so we had to stop by to grab a bowl of good old hot tofu, which is like a dessert. Be aware the dining area is small and cramped. You will likely have to sit next to a stranger in close proximity. It is street food style and casual dining. Folks order, eat and go! The tofu without a doubt was smooth, silky and fresh. I'm not a huge fan but my sister really enjoyed it. I was feeling something savory and got a mix plate of Cheung Fun (rice noodle rolls), fish balls, and fish shui mai. It was alright. I didn't look too hard at the other but it seems like take-out. Once seated, there's a ton of paper menus to mark down your order. We handed it off to the workers and the food came out in less than 5 minutes. So fast! Tofu Pudding: Choose either hot or cold, sugar or sugar-free. We ordered one to share so we couldn't stuff ourselves and it was just the right amount. Super silky! Maybe it's just me but if we each had our own, I would've gotten tired of the texture real fast. The sugar version wasn't that sweet too and we ended up adding the orange/yellow sugar, which is provided at each table. Mix Deep Fried (6 pieces): If you want to try a bit of everything, you can order this sampler of various deep fried snacks. It comes with two pieces each of deep fried tofu, tofu puffs, and golden fish and soya cakes. Pretty good snack but it's made a little better with the various sauces at the table. It's not like crispy, deep fried but a little soggy already. Overall, not bad but it didn't stand out for me. They are tiny, underground and a little crappy. For a quick purchase they're fine but if I'm shopping for the week or I'm after something especial, I head to Taste in Hopewell Centre. It's conveniently located on my way from work so it's usually in the evening when you can find me there. It's the only Taste supermarket in the North part of the Island (the other one being in Stanley), it opens early in the morning (8am) and has parking space. Right now it's undergoing renovation, but you can still shop as normal. They are relocating a take away area (sushi, sandwiches, salads, bakery and hot food) on the first floor with the main supermarket underground. It's big enough that you can find pretty much everything - there is a butchery, a cheese counter, a fresh fish counter, plenty of fruit and vegetables (and some of them cheaper than at wet markets I'm afraid), a shelf devoted to organic and locally grown veggies, a LOT of dairy products, a LOT of frozen foods...and on the other side there are the canned foods, bakery, nuts, drinks, etc., pretty much you can think of. There's even an area for alcoholic drinks and in the main aisle you can find especial offers. If you need something for your kitchen say, a pot or a pan, they also have an aisle just for that. Price wise, I still buy some goods elsewhere because they are better and cheaper: nuts and fish, for example, but they have excellent grass-fed beef from New Zealand (branded Greenlea) and some frozen veggies that I use for specific dishes. Avoid weekends, as in any given supermarket really.
