Quite expensive per Chocolate Bar or box of chocolates so I just took one of their "Traditional Toffee" Tins and made my way to the Jars of Assorted flavors of candies on the back wall. Word to the wise: Sample any of their candy before buying!! This Candy Shoppe opened in 1891 and every piece of candy taste like it was from this date! Horrible.. I spent HKD400 and they gave me a free bag of Gummy Candies. Great gesture but even these candies were stale and old! Such a great branding on a candy shop that hasn't update their candy in over 120 years...

Still, this is a nice choice if you're looking to treat yourself to something a little more special than the candies at 7-Eleven, but not looking to take out a small bank loan to finance some truffles at a high-end shop in Central (La Maison du Chocolat, anyone?) There's a good range of Mr Simms branded candies, along with other popular brands like Nerds. Overwhelmed? Try focusing on their fudge or chocolate truffle selection. Their caramel fudge is extremely sweet and delicious, and best if taken in small quantities if you want to avoid a sugar overdose. A 150g bag goes for $68. I've also tried a little of their dark chocolate truffle which is also delicious, though heads up- it does have a little bit of rum in it.

It is always a joy to pass by the store just to check what the staffs are making . seriously, how do you pull these detailed letters, icons from the blocks of coloured sugar ? Such skills and art for the eyes . From what I read, the owner especially learned this candy making skill from its Aussie originator. I'd just hope the store will be around long enough to keep me entertained each Christmas .

Candy, candy, candy...! All together now... If you like sweet stuff with words or pretty pictures…read morethrough them, then Sticky is for you. As the name sort of betrays, it is a "stick" shop, and by stick I mean "Brighton Rock" stick, you know the stuff I mean? Sticky sells a variety of flavoured sweets, all of which have started life as "Brighton Rock", but have since been hacked into small bite size morsels and packaged into the thickest plastic bags known to man. It has taken away some of the joy of having a stick of rock, but never mind, I never liked having to rewrap my rock after I've dribbled all over it anyway. I digress... The rock bites come in bags and jars, and there are a number of different flavours. They also do curled up rock on a stick - basically a lollypop rock. That's about all they have! It is all hand-made in store, in their open kitchen, so as well as the stock varieties, you can order custom made pieces. Some friends did so recently for wedding favours, which was a really nice touch. The shop itself is mental. It is gaudy and bright, screaming of Willy Wonka, so be wary of bringing your kids past it! There is also a massive amount of real estate for a few jars and bags of sweets, but the fact that I could turn around without breaking something was great.

Nonetheless, I came into this store just to look around to see if there's anything interesting. Indeed it was, it was filled with baking accessories, goods, and basically everything you could imagine to bake a cake. Although I didn't have an oven at home, i still miss baking. So knowing that they host baking classes here, my friends and I signed up. A group of us came, i think it costed us about $300 for a class. We chose the macaron class. I have joined these classes before but found that a majority of the time, all the ingredients would already have been prepared and in the end you didn't learn anything at all. This class started on time, there were about 12 of us, which is a little packed and there were some late comers as well. We each had our own area to bake and the teacher started to teach us how to make macarons. From my experience, the teacher was not very patient. He got frustrated at some of the students who did things wrong. Not everyone is a master baker. I think he should realise that. It kinda put us off a little bit. Regardless, at least the macarons turned out nicely. I haven't been back since, maybe because I was a little intimidated by the teacher or perhaps I just got really busy. It's a cool experience, at least with this macaron class, we actually got to measure out everything and did it as if we were baking at home. props to that.
