I also like how they have salad greens (mixed, rocket/arugula) that you can bag yourself. On my last visit, I picked up basil, flat leaf parsley, a carrot, and some mixed salad greens, all for $50HK. Portions were bigger as well. Do some shopping at nearby Jason's, Wellcome, CitySuper, etc, and you'll know that's a steal. As a side note, they occupy an actual shop so their prices might not be the cheapest, but I still prefer them because they have good signage in English and it's less of a language barrier for me. Just a heads up, you might be able to find things slightly cheaper at the outdoor stalls nearby.

It pains me to buy bags of lettuce that are already rotting to tomatoes that taste of water. My problem has been solved. I discovered Wah Kee Fresh Fruit and Vegetable a couple of weeks ago and have been back every weekend since to pick up my weekly veggie haul. The produce is fresh and unbruised (a feat considering the transportation needed to get them here). What's more - they last! I have never had a to question "is this still okay to cook with" on a Wednesday evening as I'm ravenously chopping up a courgette and throwing it into a pan. What's more - it's a pure delight to pick out the veggies you want. With a local farmers market feel to the shop, you're eyes are met with colour and variety. Want a purple cauliflower? Head to Wah Kee. Want to make a rainbow tomato salad? Well, they have orange, yellow, and even black; not forgetting the selection of average red tomatoes (I typically opt for the Italian). Shopping is easy. Pick up a plastic bowl and hand pick your choice veggies and fruit. Hop on over to the friendly ladies on the counter who will weigh out and total up your spend. They often throw in some free coriander or spring onion. It's my new favourite weekend morning activity, swiftly followed by a cold coffee after my mooch around the markets.

During my visit in Hong Kong I found this as I was going to Tai Cheong Bakery. The Farmers Market conveniently runs through a long street from Des Veoux Road and Graham Street and is located in the center of the walkway that connects the ferry pier and the footbridge that leads to Central. The market is small compared to other markets I have seen however the amount of veggies and fruit still makes this a place to not pass up! The vendors they are pretty nice and friendly. The variety of meat that they serve is absolutely amazing. I came on a Tuesday around noon and they still had a great selection of fruits vegetables and other things as well. They also have a market called Man Kee Shing Pork Chops that you can also buy live fresh fish and many different varieties of the meat as well as fresh fruits and vegetables. On Sundays they are organized by KFBG from 11AM-5PM and Wednesdays they are organized by SEEDS from 12PM-6PM. I came on a Tuesday where they were opened from 11AM-5PM. I knew the Farmers Market was going on when I walked past the Pier on my way to Lamma, and I knew I wasn't coming back on time to buy my veggies that day. I also knew I was coming back just to do exactly that the following Sunday morning. The market is a small one, where farmers offer their produce at large tables, placed in a square shaped area. The produce is seasonal so you'll find different veggies from time to time. Some of what they sell: leafy greens, okra, cucumber, beets, bitter gourd...Most of the farmers will expect you to ask them questions and it's a great place to learn about what you eat: there are no intermediaries so prices are fair, and affordable. The Wednesday one, which is a bit smaller than Sunday's, is organized by SEED, a foundation that promotes 'sustainable lifestyle' and has helped local farmers with the marketing of their produce. They even advertise and promote its farmers on their website so that you can get to know them beforehand. They would expect you to bring your own bag and it is also advisable to get there early, for fresher, greater variety. Do you have plans this weekend? Warning, however, if you are expecting Western Style dining, forget about it. During prime eating times there are a million locals eating at community tables. Although still absolutely the best grocery store in proximity to me, this fusion is now more of a strong 4 than a 5 to me in my eyes. The shiny patina of a clean, organized grocery store with international labels to a new hungry expat has worn just a touch in light of time, options and exposure. The booze moved to the back and they got rid of the flax seed bread I like so much over the year, but the consistency of everything else that I said before remains the same. The produce section is still pretty good (lots of veggie options coming from food sources that are clearly identifiable versus the unknown food chain coming from some stores). The dairy section is still pretty big. The creme de la creme and what would change it all for me is if that sushi counter went away. It is still there and I happily am eating sashimi from them a few days a week. The check-out lines can still wrap around the corner and be long and you might encounter a unfriendly/non-English speaking checkout person on occasion, but that would be the exception and not the rule. Also, either I am getting wider or those tiny aisles are getting smaller, because there remains the delicate dance when shifting around people at any given time while shopping because there is limited space in the shopping aisles. I am still a fan and will remain shopping a Fusion. Again, I personally find it to be the best option in the area.

There is also a small selection of frozen organic and free-range meats, and fresh organic fruits and vegetables. They accept octopus cards as well, which I always consider to be a major score. My favorite part is the discount section, which contains deeply marked-down items that have just recently expired (I mean, peanut butter never really goes bad people) . . . you can typically find awesome deals in this section on tasty snacks and other odds and ends you might need around your kitchen/snack pantry.

They may not get the most premium / expensive kinds of wine, but they always get wine expressing the most signature of the region. You can taste the Chardonnay at Chablis, Sauvignon Blanc at NZ, etc. which outline the exact characteristics you read on the textbooks. Same goes for the food. The may not be the best "Grass Fed Organic Beef", but they always have these decent, fresh choices of food for you. My complaint? Damn the air-con is freezing 24/7. Seriously. I didn't even walk through the whole shop to-date yet just because how cold it is. And this is from a local who's spoiled by the indoor aircon for more than 30 years.

Welcome to Marks and Spencer. Just off the esco at Hollywood Road road, Marks and Spencer Food is; first, probably the coldest place in Hong Kong (come on guys, refrigerate the food, not the entire shop!), second, the best place to get British comfort food that you can cook at home. M&S is basically a fancy grocery store, where all the food is imported from the UK, except the bread which is made in store. It sells a variety of ready meals, sandwiches, fresh and dry pastas, cook at home pizzas, sliced and packaged meats, pies, you get the idea. The freshest thing is the bread and some packaged fruits, as in they don't sell veggies or raw meats like Wellcome. This particular store has a small window seating area, and they do make coffee, so you can have your packed lunch (bought in store, obviously) there. The food there is not cheap, airfares being what they are now, but sometimes you just need a Melton Mowbray pork pie, and no other will do. It's interesting to see how such a staple of the UK has become a luxury brand in HK, but most importantly I can now get a cook at home lamb shank. At least that's Christmas dinner sorted this year! For my local friends, you should visit, just to see how we Brits wine and dine at home. For my UK friends, come and get a pie - it's all good. And with the AC cranked to the max, it will feel like winter in Newport...
