This is a restaurant that I had been to before. I had never had any problems, and while the food wasn't very good, it reminded me of Shanghai.
However, when I went today I had a truly awful experience. I asked for dumplings but requested them in soup (the menu had a section for dumplings and noodles in soup) The man serving didn't seem to speak English so I tried explaining to him in Mandarin. He didn't even listen to what I wanted to say and just made random responses- yes the vegetarian dumplings are all vegetables- no meat. I explained that I just wanted dumplings in soup- to omit the noodles. Instead of explaining the menu to me, he suddenly got very upset and started yelling at me, saying I shouldn't speak Chinese, I know nothing about China, and that I shouldn't speak Chinese unless I studied better. I was offended by his tone and his words and embarrassed as everyone at the restaurant was looking at us. I was there alone, a girl. After his words about my chinese (which was unprovoked and had nothing to do with his restaurant or food at all) I said I would go somewhere else. He took the liberty of picking up my things to help me leave faster, all the while still yelling at me from behind me.
I was completely shocked as I've never been treated like this by anyone in any country, much less as a customer at a restaurant. I don't know what I did to provoke this or if he was just having a bad day, but I will certainly not return to this restaurant. read more
