In times when you are constantly eating out and are missing the home-cooked soups you get from your mom, this is the perfect place for you to go to. Located in the business center of Sheung Wan, this joint, good soup targets the office workers whom are deprived from proper soups. Busy OLs munching on shop bought salads; men in suit slaving over stock market digging on lunch boxes, from a Chinese medicine perspective, these types of eating habit is very unhealthy and is actually disrupting the internal balance of the body. You know how the chinese use to combine foods and medicine; it is believed that the ingredients in the soup have therapeutic properties and could actually restore the balance of the Ying and Yang. Frankly, i don't really care too much about the internal balance thing, as long as the soup tastes good, it works for me. Indeed, the soups served by this joint is freshly made and have been simmering for long hours; you can actually feel the collagen sticking your lips together after taking a sip off the cup. That's the very definition of a good bowl of soup. I got to say the flavor might be too mild for me, that is, not enough salt; yet all the hard work put into the soup costs only $8 for a cup and $22 for a pot, what more could you ask for? $22 for a taste from the heart of the home, it is worth the while, and more.

Some of the best beef noodles you can get. It's a small bowl but really packed and filling.read more

Part of Hong Kong legends are 90 year old noodle shops. You might even hear me say it's THE place for beef brisket noodles. Other (likely amateur) things tourists like me say: My favorites are the broth, flat noodles and on occasion, tendon. I think most people would go for the broth or curry. E-Fu noodles seem to be the most popular, often being sold out. Once they even sold out of broth. I'm lucky or an unpunctual eater or very late to the Kau Kee club as I've never waited in a line. Know that long queues have been said to be the welcome. The first time I visited was thanks to its Michelin recommended status. At the time of writing this review it has since been awarded the Bib Gourmand. The experience was quintessentially Asia. The two of us sardined on a table with a family of four who were either local or no stranger to the land and culture. Normally patrons respectfully dine quickly in silence and leave. This group was indeed quick with typical stoic expressions but also gifted us a smidge of their efforts when looking up from their bowls for the slightest seconds, pointing at their drinks: cokes with lemons, wordlessly suggesting we try some and gesturing their hands to show us how to. Lemon first on the ice, coke poured on. Of course we copied and it was the most extravagant part of our meal. ;)

Hong Kong Cafes with a noodle focus almost always end up being my preferred places to chow down…read more Chui Hing (潮興魚蛋粉) is combines no nonsense service with killer food, along with affordable pricing and 24 hour availability to boot. The pretense is non-existent and locals (including myself!) seem to love it here. So like many noodle spots in HK, this place is fairly small. No big tables for 5+ but quite a few small'ish round tables that are good for solo eats or the invaluable food companion. The aroma coming from the semi-open kitchen should be enough inspiration for folks to know what they want upon arrival, but just in case they have the menus outlined along the wall. An easy way to start? Try a wonton and beef brisket with your choice of noodles. The wontons are somewhat pillowy in texture and full of flavor while the beef brisket is braised well while maintaining a perfectly chewy bite. The noodle variety is good, with egg / rice noodles winning over the crowd though I feel the e-fu noodles take the cake. Lastly, do not sleep on the beef tendon. It's practically butter when done right. Chui Hing does fancy itself as a HK style cafe, so other dishes like congee, fried fish skin, fried rice, may appear on the menu, focus on what to stack in your bowl instead. The staff is really helpful and welcoming.

Pretty good wonton noodle soup and milk tea. They're open 24/7 and very close to many local hotels…read more I only got takeout, but noticed great air conditioning inside. The prices are also very reasonable. I bought beef ball and wonton, wonton noodle soup. I didn't ask to have the noodles separate, but they still retained a good amount of chew by the time I got back up top the hotel. You can pay a little extra anywhere to ask them pack separate. The wontons are ok, beef balls are good, noodles are good, soup okay. The milk tea wasn't very strong but has a nice authentic back flavor. Everything was ready in under 5 minutes. Very good for takeout!

I've walked this place a couple of times and every time I see their claypot rice cooking outside…read moreand think I should try it. I finally got the chance tonight! We had two claypots (salted fish with meat cake, shrimp paste with pork), their onion and soy sauce chicken and veggies. The salted fish and meat cake claypot had generous portions of both ingredients. The pork in the meat cake tasted fresh and the salted fish was definitely salty enough. The shrimp paste with pork was also very good. The shrimp paste that the pork was cooked in was just strong enough to have flavor but not overbearing. The cut of pork has the texture of pork neck meat - tender but with a slight chew to it. Both pots produced really good burnt rice. The burnt rice at the bottom of the claypot was crispy and didn't stick to your molars. The onion and soy sauce chicken was tender but a little bit under cooked. Still edible, but there was a light pink to bigger pieces of meat. The veggies that we ordered were very bright green and well cooked with garlic, even though we actually ordered with soup. The staff were nice and patient, no rushing you in and out. The restaurant itself felt like it had been there for a long time, but it wasn't dirty or grubby. My only complaint was that the food took a long time to come (at least 20 minutes). The server warned us that the claypot rices would take long, which I understand, but the chicken and veggie should have been quicker. It could have also been that I was really hungry so felt especially impatient. Overall, I had a good dining experience it here and would recommend this place to anyone in the area.

Overall: -Easy access from MTR (Jordan C2 exit, 3 blocks…read morestraight ahead, then make a left) -No waits -Good service -Reasonable prices I can't really complain at all about this place. Have been a few times, and enjoyed it both times. Food: Good claypot rice with crispy rice on the bottom. 10+ options of claypot rice. For the seasonal vegetables they have 5+ options, and can cook it in 3+ ways. One time we had the vegetables in soup broth and it was very good. Can't complain about any of the food. Service: They let you take your time to order and don't rush you out. When I called a few days ahead to ask about making reservations for a Monday evening, they said there was no need and there would be seats. Special food accommodations: They also said that I could pre-order any special request dishes. If our party was interested in ordering soup, I could leave my phone number and when they go to the market to see what type of ingredients was available, he could whatsapp me the options and the pricing for a party of 8 (original number of people we had). They did message me the next day with 3 options. Pricing: Each claypot rice is about $50. For 6 people, we ordered 4 claypot rice, 1 vegetable, and 5 drinks and total was $65 per person. Definitely a place I would return to. A nice local and neighborly vibe.
