I tend to get pizza here - the house deluxe is my particular favorite. If you're feeling hungry and/or want some to take home, make sure to get a medium as the small pizza size is actually smaller than a traditional dinner plate. I also adore their iced cappuccino - there's just something yummy about it that is the best way to start the day (ironically as this place is next to a coffee shop). The wait staff are attentive and generally pretty friendly. They speak limited English but I always am able to communicate what I would like and they always get it right so we make it work. They have both indoor and outdoor seating so its great to have those options too. I really like this place, and would recommend it for family, friends, or any sort of group looking for some good, casual food.

This restaurant is part of Maxims Group, which is basically a guarantee for above average standards. The Shanghainese dishes served here are authentic and colorful in diversity. Some of my favorites are the sweet and sour fried fish, braised lion's head, spicy beef in pungent sauce, and the fried prawns coated in salted egg yolk. From presentation to taste, the sweet and sour fried fish is thoughtfully prepared. The fish is succulent and fried in a batter that remains crispy in the sauce. The sweet and sour sauce is well balanced and really compliments the fish. I like the lion's head here because it's flavorful and not as fatty compared to other ones. There's just the right amount of fat in the meatball to create a very soft and tender texture while not making it overly greasy. The sauce that it's braised is also delicious and hearty. The spicy beef in pungent sauce is a family favorite. It's served boiling hot and extremely spicy! It comes with a ton of beef and Mung bean sheets. All the flavors are strong but delicious and warming in the winter. I have to say that the fried prawns in salted egg yolk are also my favorite. The size of the prawns here are impressive and they're cooked to perfection. They also don't skimp on the salted egg yolk. In our recent visit, we also tried the scallops with mushrooms and vegetables served in a truffle sauce. I was a little skeptical about the truffle sauce in a Chinese dish at first but it was delicious! I was mind blown by the different textures of the mushrooms, vegetables and scallops. The truffle sauce was really toned down. It complimented the scallops without overpowering the flavors. Overall, fantastic food and excellent service. I highly recommend Shanghai Jade to anyone looking for some fancy Shanghainese food!

The soya sauce pork knuckle "Yuen Tai" was very tender and good. We also liked the sweet and sour fish which was first deep fried so that it was nice and crispy. Tables weren't packed too closely to each other and service was polite and prompt. Portion on the group dinner set was also plentiful as well. The highlight of the meal was definitely the spicy lamb rib dish. The skin was so deliciously crispy, I just kept going back for more. The lamb itself was gamey, so if be warned if that's not your preference. Peking duck was very good as well, though I think they serve quite a bit of meat along with the skin nowadays. The spicy pork belly with asparagus and okra was boldly flavored and I would recommend if you're comfortable with a bit of heat. Of course, what Northern Chinese dinner would be complete without some XLBs? Solid work on the XLBs here. Would recommend giving them a go. Downer was the fried prawns with salted egg. The shrimp just wasn't fresh enough and it had that mushy texture. The flavor of the salted egg didn't really come through either. So fried giant mushy shrimp... Overall, above average for Northern Chinese in Southern China with all things considered.

That allowed me to taste more than ten dishes of their food. They all tasted great without much to complaint. And the bill ended up at 1500$ that fed about 12 big guys. I particularly loved the fish dish which they cooked the entire fish with spices and additional meats and mushroom on the it. It tasted great with lot of flavours while the texture was smooth at the meat and crispy at the skin and bones. In comparison to the Peking Duck, the duck was a bit too thick cut. Other dishes are not big, so you may try more dishes with our limited space of our stomach. The service was attentive, even during the busy lunch hour with a lot of tables to fill, the waiting staffs gave us lot of attention to clearing our plates and even changing our dining plates as well. For the price of 100$ to 200$ per person, I think the overall service was outstanding. However, there is still room for improvement. For food, although they all tasted wonderful, I have a feeling that some of them could be better, such as the peking duck. As for service, if they are to welcome us verbally, I think they should have done it with greater enthusiasm. Anyhow, I will come back when I ever need to drop by in the weekend.

It's Michelin-recommended, so we decided to try it for our last lunch. We ordered quite a spread. The honey-glazed char siu was my favorite, beautifully caramelized on the outside with slightly charred edges, while the pork was tender and juicy. Definitely one of the dishes I'd order again. The har gow had plump shrimp inside thin, delicate wrappers, while the siu mai were generously filled and really satisfying. The xiao long bao had soft wrappers with that little burst of soup inside, and the bean curd skin rolls were silky and soaked up the savory sauce nicely. We also had the beef with silky scrambled egg and rice noodles, which was rich and comforting, with the soft egg almost becoming a sauce for the beef and noodles. The fried rice was darker and more intensely seasoned than the usual Cantonese fried rice, with bits of meat, egg and vegetables throughout. Even the stir-fried Chinese greens were done well, garlicky, fresh and still crisp. We ended with the pork buns, warm and fluffy inside with that sweet, crumbly golden crust on top. Service was attentive The restaurant is large and quite traditional, and it was packed during lunch with lots of local families. Nothing overly fancy, just a very satisfying Cantonese lunch and a nice way to end our Hong Kong trip.

Dim sum dishes were standard (w exception to the black sesame roll which was served warm...so good and pronounced sesame flavor that brought back childhood memories as most tea houses in the U.S. don't serve this anymore) but the à la carte items were the factors that made me give it a 4 star rating. Crispy beef ribs we never had this way before. The crunchy flaky exterior gave it an interesting texture but it had good beefy taste...could have been a tad more tender. The pan fried cod w/ corn sauce was excellent. The soy pan fried cod also delicious. Their roasted suckling pig though was definitely the star!

Pretty good Taiwanese food, definitely better than anything in the states (I'm looking at you, 626!). My theory is anything closer to the country will have better food from that country, and TeaWood definitely proves my point. I got the beef noodle soup and Taiwanese sausage. Both were really good, and the flavors and textures were on point! The noodles were thick and chewy, and the soup-noodle-beef ratio was solid. I would've liked a few more carrots and daikon radishes to cut the dish. I also got some berry dessert that was a special, but the staff was a bit inattentive and I had to ask for it again. They legit thought I was just sitting there after my meal not paying . The dessert had some pieces of strawberries, two French macarons, two blueberries, two overwhelming strawberry frosted donuts, and a scoop of ice cream with a little glazed cake thing on the bottom. The macarons were not good, the donuts looked frozen and then thawed out and were way too sweet, the ice cream was redeemable, and the glazed cake thing tasted like a jello cake. If I wasn't so interested in the way the dessert was decorated, I would have just gotten the pineapple cake dessert. Maybe that was the way to go ‍

While the chicken is good and getting the meal is a quick and relatively healthy swap for when I don't feel like cooking. I'm a big fan of their baguettes, the chicken sandwich that comes on the baguette as well as just buying a couple of loaves if I feel like splurging on eating carbs. The sandwich is a tasty well prepared little thing-it kind of reminds me of the mini subs that Blimpy's used to have but packed with a a lot of chicken and veggies. The potatoes are also a favorite side dish of mine but a few people have said it's a little too greasy because it's cooked in chicken juice. The only real complaint I have is that the servings are usually pretty small-like most places in HK. I end up buying the dinner for four deal for two people.

Amidst the noodles and the dim sum is this tiny takeaway place that serves...French roast chicken??…read moreI don't know what makes this place so French, other than the fact it's run by a French guy. We have roast chicken back in Canada too. But damn, it was good chicken and the sides were delish! No Swiss Chalet baby chicken and bland veggies here. It's becoming clearer to me that HK isn't the cheap food haven as I was led to believe. Still, La Rotisserie is rather reasonable. On the weekends, 1/4 chicken + 2 sides is priced at HKD $86 (CAD $15). Weekday lunch sets include 1/4 chicken + 1 side + drink for HKD $68 (CAD $12). They also take Octopus. I was kinda surprised at the price discrepancy between locations though. I recently moved so this Sai Ying Pun La Rotisserie isn't very accessible to me anymore. I'm still close to Wan Chai, but that one bumps its lunch special price to HKD $78. I know that area is a work-centric, rich expat-filled area, but I'm an expat on a budget!!! Every dollar counts! Regardless, it was still really, really good chicken. It was moist, the roasting was flavourful, and the portion was very reasonable. They also topped the chicken with a drizzle of chicken gravy and a sprinkling of fresh ground pepper. You got to choose between chicken breast or leg and they had 3 side dish options. For my two sides, I picked roasted potatoes and roasted vegetables (the last was some sort of couscous thing). The veggies were great and were a mixture of sweet carrots, broccoli, and squash. The potatoes were nicely cooked and even better when soaked in the chicken gravy. For a Hong Konger who grew up in the West and is craving a bit of the West in Hong Kong, La Rotisserie fulfills that craving with amazing chicken. The Sai Ying Pun location is mainly a takeaway store with a couple of bar stools, so don't expect a comfortable dine-in experience. As with most shops, it's completely open on one side onto the street, which really maximizes its impact. The whole store is practically spilling its seductive aroma and hitting everyone within a 5 meter radius. It's like crack to an addict and La Rotisserie is the best dealer around. (28/100) - 2017
