This is a nice little shop that probably sits around 40-50 people. In the winter time, they're mostly famous for their snake soup - which is a Chinese delicacy to help fight against the cold. The soup cost around $50-60HKD, so around $9-10CDN. For just a bowl it sounds a little pricey, but it is loaded!. You obviously have the snake meat - usually there should be 2 types of snakes as the main ingredient. Then it's topped with with chrysanthemum leaves, spices, lemon leaves and fried dough on the side. The soup itself is very thick as it's stewed for hours. The snake meat tastes similarly to chicken, but a little tougher to chew on. It gives a very hearty feeling to it and a warm feeling inside and out. Because there's so much content inside, one bowl fills you up pretty well (so worth the money!). If you are in the neighborhood, I would highly recommend to be a little adventurous and try it once (or share a bowl). A lot of locals enjoy it. Since we were on the hunt for food that we wouldn't normally get in the states, we headed over to She Wong Yee (蛇王二, with the first two words meaning King of Snakes) for dinner since we heard they had the best snake soup. We were squeezed into a table with other people (which is pretty common in Hong Kong), and then we ordered some soup and duck. Honestly, with all the stuff in the soup, I couldn't really tell which parts were the pieces of snake meat. Or I quote couldn't really tell which parts were the snake unquote. Probably the latter because I didn't want to consciously let myself know that I was scooping spoonful of snake meat into my mouth. I really liked the gelatinous texture of the soup, and it was nice that the bowl was loaded with ingredients. Very fulfilling for my tummy! This place is known for their snake soup, but I passed by one day looking for a lunch spot and saw that they had roasted meats in the window and thought I could stop in. Once inside I could see that the place was packed for lunchtime (common sight in Causeway Bay if the place is actually good). I checked out the lunch menu and decided to skip roasted meats this time. I chose spareribs with black beans over rice. And boy, was I surprised. It was the best spareribs and rice I've had in Hong Kong, or possibly ever at a restaurant. The spareribs were so flavorful. I don't know how to actually convey that to you in words or raise your expectations for the spareribs, but seriously, it just tasted really good. They also have soups you can order, just as a soup of the day or more special ones in the ($30+ range that included snake soup or chicken soup). When we went it was not that busy so we sat a a 6 person table and only one extra person joined us later. You have to clean your spoons and chopsticks in the tea that they give you and make sure you bring your own napkins and wet napkins. There is a set course with snake soup, blood sausage in rice and vegetables. However you can switch the blood sausage for bbq pork and goose for a bit more money. There is an English menu that you can ask for if you can't read the Chinese menu on the table. The snake soup is the best while the bbq pork and goose was average. Under the influence of the stream of cantonese immigrants flocking to HK in the last century, there are quite a lot eateries specializing in the art of preparing snake soup. As a tradition these shops all have their titles starting with "she wong"(蛇王) which translates to " king of snakes" in english. She wong yee is a landmark in causeway bay that serves up snake soups for over 30 years. However, i am not writing about the snake soup; rather, I would like to draw your attention to the steamed soups they have to offer. Rather than boiling the soup in a large pot, each pitcher is prepared individually with respective sets of ingredients. Since there is no additional liquid to dilute the soup, the flavor is much concentrated an intense. A typical combo would be a pitcher of the steamed soup served with a bowl of rice topped with your choice of barbecued meat. For a more exquisite choice you can opt for steamed Chinese sausage for the topping. I would say this place is better for lunch than dinner due to the limited space in the eatery; another concern would be the price, the average price for the combo set is over $50 which is slightly pricy for an everyday lunch.
