Langer's in LA is our favorite deli and we go there frequently, so once in a while, we crave for…read moreAmerican deli sandwiches. Morty's was rated as one of the best sandwich restaurants in HK, we were certainly excited to try it and didn't mind the price. The sandwiches are priced comparable to many delis in the States. The quality though, is subpar and not very authentic. We were quite disappointed. Pastrami in the Reuben was chewy and fries tasted like home made air fryer fries. French dip - a bit better than the Reuben, but still tasted like frozen ones from Costco. French dip was NOT served with Au Jus as stated on the menu, but gravy! Two stars for the attentive service. Sorry I really wanted to love it.

A lot of expats would get their lunch here because it is convenient, delicious and well-priced for what you are getting.  I got the Classic duck meat sandwich and it was the bomb. It was loaded with delicious juicy duck as well as avocado, lettuce, tomato and onion on rye bread. The bread was crispy, and the fatness of the duck meat was just right. Actually duck fat is food for you anyways, so no need to worry at all about feeling guilty after eating the whole sandwich, because you will. We also tried the Reuben where the meat was a bit on the dry side, but expected from pastrami. It was nevertheless still very food. Overall, while I am typing this post, I am drooling just thinking about those sandwiches. I want more of those delicious duck meat on rye bread. Excuse me while I run and get some haha.

The restaurant is located on the bottom floor of the Langham Hotel and, when we arrived for dinner on a Monday night, was nearly empty. Perhaps unsurprisingly, service was excellent and fast, and the restaurant is tastefully decorated and spotlessly clean. Unlike what the name of the restaurant implies, the menu is not focused solely on New York City foods. Rather it is broadly American, with items from New York cuisine, Tex Mex cuisine, southern American cuisine, and others. I had a cheeseburger and fries and also tried the eggs Benedict. The burger was exceptionally well cooked, juicy and tender, but perhaps a bit underseasoned. The fries were similarly underseasoned but well cooked, just like the burger. The eggs were pretty good but nothing spectacular. Prices are very high and perhaps a little too high considering quality and portion size. Overall a good experience at Main St. Deli but one that I wouldn't recommend going too far out of your way to try.

I've grown up largely on western cuisine, so anytime I had an opportunity to eat it while living /…read morestaying for long periods of time in Asia, it's always a welcome sight. The deli scene in Hong Kong is next to zero, but Morty's is here to fill that void. This Wan Chai location is not really near the MTR. They're sandwiched in between Admiralty and Wan Chai but is most easily accessible from Hennessy Rd and up a couple of blocks onto Wing Fung St. The restaurant looks like a small diner on the beginning of an street incline. Parking is a near impossibility. It's a narrow, tight squeeze but they've still made room for all sorts of group action, including an outdoor table in their courtyard. Ventilation is quite good and there are TVs for watching sports on the inside. It's generally well lit and clean, which is sometimes all we can ask for. The food is not going to win awards from smoked meat purists, but it'll do the job. They offer a classic pastrami as well as a reuben and some interesting smoked meat burgers and a short rib sandwich that is supposedly cooked for 72 hours via sous vide. They also have a rare item in poutine (#1), which is true to form with cheese curds, a little pastrami, and topped off with homemade gravy. They also have hot dogs, specialty sandwiches (#3), salads, and they even a have plant based options. The latter includes a cubano, burgers, and a mushroom version of their popular reuben. I also appreciate that they care about their bread so much that they actually have ciabatta, baguette, rye, or even a bagel. I think I'm most impressed with their drink selection, which includes cocktails, wine, beer, and soda options. The bottomless iced lemon tee makes me chuckle, but I'm likely to shoot for their rootbeer float ($75HKD), which is totally alcoholic. Overall, I'm not mad at the food. It's smaller than I expected (#2). I find that $160-170HKD is a little pricey for their signature sandwiches, but I get that they're also gauging prices the way they are in North America. Would likely come back when I feel like bleeding money and eating smoked meats. __________ (#1) Trust me. It's rare. We barely have it in Houston, TX where I'm based! (#2) Foodflation around the world, food shrinkage in Asia. Portions R not us.

This place opened around the end of December 2015? Why is this place called Under Vacuum? Because it is translated from French's word, sous-vide. This meaning a "method of cooking in which food is sealed in airtight plastic bags then placed in a water bath or in a temperature-controlled steam environment for longer than normal cooking times" This place sells slow-cooked beef that goes under an 8 or 48-hour process, or slow-cooked chicken that goes under a 2-hour process as a sandwich. Mm... soft meat. They also sell salads, craft beers (yesssss), special drinks, and desserts (which they partnered with a local source) I was sad that they didn't have any slow-cooked ribs the day I went, but that gives me a reason to come back! And they have a happy hour from 6-9pm: if you order any craft beer, you get 50% off on their snack menu. Whaaat. More reason for me to come back! They have only 4 stools to sit right at their kiosk, but do not fret, there are plenty of chairs around the area, but no table. They also provide plastic gloves for you to eat with. Neat. I waited about.. 10 minutes for my food? I think it was fairly worth it. I wish I could drink their craft beers during lunch time and go back to work...

And you will have to allow time for them to cook, even for a sandwich. Their signature angus beef sandwich is just awesome and goes well with a crafted IPA beer. The ribs is awesome too, with very tender texture. I would like to try out more food from their menu as they are very reasonably priced. There are seats in the centenary garden, but you could always do take away. Or you could stand around the kiosk, which they had a small table for a few couples to stand around.

We devoured the rest. The pizza was yum. For what you can find in HK, this was a good one. Cheese and tomato sauce tasted like Stateside pizza on a cracker-like crust. The ribs were falling off the bone. One quarter of the ribs was more bones than meat, kinda sad. The burger is as tall as ones head. We shared it , but I was the one who ate most of it. It's really a burger to be eaten in layers or with an unhinged jaw.

If you do not know how to go to this place, notice that it is located right next to Butterfly On Hollywood Boutique Hotel. It is just around the corner. This is an Italian restaurant and its burgers taste like heaven! I have to say that it is among the same level as the Burgeroom in Causeway Bay but slightly fancier than just a burger joint. Since its alcohol license is still under application period. You can now bring your own drinks. (7-11 is just close by if you don't mind people looking at you weird). The interior design is rather cozy with red bricks on the wall and wooden stools next to the bar. It is definitely a nice place to chill with your friends and colleagues. On the menu there are over a dozen of different burgers and the price range is between HKD$100 to HKD$200. At first I was rather taken back by the price but after trying it I would say I was rather pleased with it. I tried the Number 1 Burger mainly because I did not want to spend that much and I was not sure about its quality since it was new. It was made of Wagyu beef, cheese and relish. Later it was served on a rather huge chopping board and I was surprised how big this burger was! The paddy was juicy and very thick with nice tenderness. The buns were too very delicious. Overall I am definitely coming back in a month to try out other dishes!
