I know. Why go to KFC in Hong Kong when you can get it in LA? My sister insisted on having fried chicken for dinner, so we decided to stop by KFC before hitting the night market.
Like McDonald's, KFC actually has a slightly tweaked menu in Hong Kong and Taiwan than it does in LA. The biggest differences - no crispy recipe; they only carried regular and spicy chicken. No biscuits or French fries as sides, but they do offer rice with a mushroom gravy. They have plastic gloves for you to use, to keep your hands relatively clean and oil-free. And the KFC's in Asia (sadly, not this particular location) sell egg tarts and other unique desserts!
We ordered a simple 4 piece meal that came with a corn and a drink. But apparently if you added a few HKD, you could upgrade the meal to include another corn, soda, popcorn chicken, and rice with gravy - a really good deal in my opinion. Really can't say much about KFC. Chicken was good. Oily, but flavorful and juicy. The mushroom rice was really strange and not something I enjoyed. You're even able to get a whole tub of rice and the gravy if you want, but I just didn't like the flavors. Popcorn chicken was tasty and had quite a number of pieces inside that small box. Best part of the meal was the corn! Super sweet and juicy and incredibly yellow! I like how they serve the corn on a stick, so you're able to hold it and eat it without getting your hands dirty!
This KFC also had a pretty friendly worker who would clean up after customers left and return trays, pick up trash, etc. I thought she did a pretty good job at keeping the restaurant clean, especially since fried chicken is not a particularly clean eating endeavor. There's a ton of people who go to this KFC location, so if you're craving fried chicken on a weeknight during dinner time, expect a wait. I also saw a lot of people who would just sit at the restaurant and hog a table for quite some time - even saw a lady come in and read without ordering anything.
tl;dr - Since it's a chain, you can expect to find the same quality of food that your local KFC serves right here as well. Storefront gets busy and crowded, so be prepared to wait in line or wait for a table. read more
