The area is not extremely handicap friendly, so knowing that may help your travels. Tai Kwun is on top of the hill so it is steep as you walk down back to Central MTR Station. I got to visit all of the buildings on a self-guided tour and discovered that one of the prison cells housed Vietnamese revolutionary Ho Chi Minh amongst other historical inmates. Whether you're a history buff or just a curious explorer, Tai Kwun is a unique place to visit.

First off, this function room was hard to find. When I was inside the hotel, the staff didn't understand when I said I needed to go to "Tian and Di", and instead directed me to the hotel room elevators. At some point, I was thinking "does this place even exist?" because no one knew how to get there. I walked around for about 15 minutes and saw that it was on the same floor as Amber (consistently ranked the best restaurant in the city), so I just popped on an elevator and press the 7th floor. Getting off the elevator, I took a peek at Amber to my right, knowing that I would have to blow serious dough just to afford an appetizer there. Upon entering the venue, I sensed the intimate nature and privacy of the place. It was really quiet, classy, and exuded luxury like no other function room that I've been to. The staff in charge of tea and confections were highly trained, moved fast, and were rarely seen as they seem to blend with the surroundings. The carpet was exquisitely velvet and the chair comfy as a cloud. As I sat down, I received the press release for the event and the rundown, which they happily gave to me in Chinese while a woman who sat next to me had both the English and Chinese version. Overall, if you've got the greens to book Tian, Di or both(!), go right ahead as the venue is truly stellar and totally discrete. The outdoor location just make the event more enjoyable! Although outdoor events are more prone to be affected by the weather, I look forward for more public events to be held in this new location. To arrive at this place, exit from the Central MTR station and walk along the foot bridge towards the ferry pier. Walk down the staircase after you go pass the IFC. The place is right opposite Pier 7.

The venue is a short walk from covered footbridge that runs from IFC to the Central Pier. You can drop down to the ground level from the covered footbridge (either at the one closest to IFC or the one at the actual pier) and it will be a 5 minute walk over to the venue either way. During the daylight hours in the summer, it can be a hot walk, for there is little to no shade at the venue (trees are not fully mature nor large). I attended Art Central at this venue as well this past Spring. Kind of a natural outdoor extension to the Convention Center that is further up the way, this place in this spot makes sense and is useful space to many large events.

Here's the deal: This place is awesome and over the past 2 years, I've become a regular. Of the M1 nightlife establishments, Nathan Left is certainly the most unique. The exterior features a classic Hollywood marquee sign, along with open door seating at their downstairs pub where there is just enough room for people to enjoy a view out on the street while drinking a pint. The second floor, where a majority of the people are is stunning from a decor standpoint. It is mainly a lounge with very contemporary decor pieces and dynamic ones that change in from night in to night out (depending on their theme) along with tables, a stage, a classy bar, and a performing stage. Hidden in the back are pool tables, a karaoke room, and even beer pong. When I say I was blown away by the place, I was even more taken aback when I came back on different nights and the interior was transformed. One night was for a movie night and it was 1920s flapper party and the next night it was b-boys, big beats, and a hell of a hip hop night. For most other nights, it's a showcase of some of the best Filipino cover bands one can find. The menu is mainly a mix of western food, which like any M1 spots are typically grossly overpriced and typically mediocre. I was however, impressed at some of the items, such as their "wurst" sausage variety, and even their $650HKD steak which was exactly how I wanted it -- medium rare. Even I was surprised when I found their hamburgers and pizza to be strangely tasty. Despite all of this, I'd still opt for their drinks more than anything. The drinks are standard, but well done. There is a pretty solid selection of whiskey, and some beers on tap. It's not the most extensive selection of alcohol by any means, but it'll more than do the job for people who can order typical cocktails. The staff is young, professional, and very multilingual. My first few visits here were taken care of by Jordan, who despite looking like a fella from Ireland, was in fact a Hong Kong native and mercilessly trolling folks with his flawless Cantonese. The same for the gorgeous Zasha, who served every drink with a smile. Or absurdly friendly Jerome, who knew exactly how to get the party started. Finally, the manager Tony would give a hearty handshake to his regulars every time they entered / exited the joint. It seems like a moot point by now, but this really was my nightlife home away from home. It was a fun occasion any night of the week, a great place for a date, group fun, or a solo drinking session.
