(Visited 01/05/19 SA @ 3:00pm): There was something to be said about this "village" in the mist of cultural and historic landmarks!
A friend and I had a long layover in Hong Kong and wanted to experience some of the famed landmarks on Lantau Island which was relatively close to the airport with the aid of some additional transportation, so we decided to see the famed Tian Tan Buddha and remote Po Lin Monastery but first needed to walk through Ngong Ping Village. This blantant tourist trap with no way of getting around it was a buffer to the real attractions. With that being said, was there anything redeeming about it!?
ATTRACTION
Total time spent - 30 minutes: As I already alluded to, this was a faux village that greeted you as you entered through its archway https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=g04zW54RAD7mlVQF2mnhaw&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw, passed by a handful of welcoming drums https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=42p8NMcXBumK2A1VT_DFaw&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw, then though the main part of town which housed all the restaurants and souvenir shops, onto one random livestock https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=wJa_jtId9fEJcITwyLzMOQ&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw and then another that was more apt to be petted https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=1darfOv2ikBQ2oxZY6zNeA&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw, before you saw a selection of statues to pose with https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=MK1Dq3h554b0teRx35Ja8Q&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw, and finally a signpost https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=n1In-Y8UoW0GjAngpEIr-w&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw that directed you to other attractions namely the more spiritual elements of the area. SERVICE
There really was none to speak of within the village itself unless you walked into one of the many businesses. Otherwise, enjoy the stroll down the pathway, let your eyes - and potentially feet - wander from side-to-side and into a business, and take in your surroundings.
PARKING (Varied; N/A this instance)
The two main modes of transportation to Lantau Island and specifically this attraction was either the cable cars or buses. I honestly couldn't recall any cars but saw parking lots where numerous buses parked, so I imagined there was parking for smaller vehicles, too.
ATMOSPHERE, DÉCOR, AMBIENCE
Situated in a lush mountain locale in the great outdoors, you were surrounded by plenty of foliage with scenic views in all directions, Chinese-esque structures while you walked upon brinks and stones, and Tian Tan Buddha looked down upon you. Saved for a handful of umbrellaed outdoor tables, your greatest concern was the varied weather patterns like fog, rain, or the burning hot sun, so best to be prepared in any situation or cowered indoors in one of the many shops.
ATTIRE
Totally casual, so I would normally be in a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops.
OVERALL
Ngong Ping Village was an unavoidable attraction if you wanted to experience the real money shots at the end of the cable car ride. Aside from a vegetarian restaurant at Po Lin Monastery and souvenirs at Tian Tan Buddha, this made-for-tourist village was your go-to to separate you from your dinero. Filled with mostly Westernized eateries, there were a few more authentic places like Zen Noodle Café. The prices were more aligned with tourist levels which was to be expected. I found fairly good value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (TOTAL paid experience was around 0.00 HKD/0.00 USD BEFORE any discounts and/or tip). And, they accepted my credit card of choice...AMEX! 3.5 STARS read more
