Should be good if there's like 10 other bbt places w/in a 30 sec walking distance w/ shorter lines (or even no line), right? Or maybe it's just busy with first-timers like me who have heard it's good... but I'll be back to try more drinks! I've been in Hong Kong for a month now and I decided to finally wait and see what the hype was all about. It was early in the afternoon, so not as many people as I usually see. I got an iced Golden Oolong Milk Tea -- the golden bubbles and the oolong tea were good. You can customize amount of ice and sugar, I got less ice and 25% sugar. They seem to be pretty efficient and you can wait on the sidewalk by the fence and watch for your number in red, then go and pick up your drink when you see your number (...duh, mei. lol). At first I thought I would have to really listen for when they call my number, so this went much more smoothly than I expected. So I'm actually chewing the rest of the bubbles now as I write my review (note: there is an overwhelming amount of them left, so I will be asking for less next time) and I'm realizing they are a little chewier than I've had. Also, they are smaller bubbles--at least these golden ones anyway. I prefer the softer and larger bubbles...they have two other kinds of bubbles so I will be trying those soon hopefully and will report back!

I'm personally a big fan of that Taiwanese chain, so when I learned of this place, right in the heart of where I used to hang out as a teenager, I decided to stop by to see for myself. The tea was decent, but nothing stood out. I would call it average, since there has been many good places that opened up all over Hong Kong. Given how quickly these places open and close though, I'm surprised this one is surviving, especially in a very competitive corner of Mong Kok. It's worth a try when you are in the neighbourhood. But, really, why not just fly an hour away to Taiwan for all the deliciousness over there? Save your appetite while in Hong Kong for their other local delicacies.

It has a big bamboo containers filled with fortune sticks. The idea is to pick a stick randomly from the container and get a paper from the drawers according to the number on the stick in order to see your fortune. I ordered the black sugar milk with boba. The wait was quite a while because they really focus on making each cup perfect, which I really respect because they care about quality control. It's pretty cool that they also flame torched the drink to create a caramelized texture on top. The drink itself is a bit sweet to me at first, however, the milk balanced it out well. I also think that the boba is too soft...they might've overcooked it. Don't think I'd be back anytime soon because of the wait and the price ($30 HKD), but overall had a great time drinking this!

Arguably one of my favourite Chinese desserts (along with tofu pudding... there's clearly a theme here). It's sweet. It's spoonful after spoonful of milky goodness without the heaviness of cream. It's brewed right up front using pantyhose as a strainer. Spring onion chicken over dry ramen noodles: The dish they are most known for. This was SO good after a night of drinking and mean whisky breath. The instant noodles are perfectly low-key and great for absorbing all the alcohol. Chicken was delicious and all of it is "activated" by pouring burning oil on the green onions and chicken. Pork Chop Bun: The noodles were enough for me but I really wanted to try this. Tender pork with tomato and mayo in a bun, simple street food that I loved!

There is a sign indicating dine-in or carryout at the entrance of the cha chaan teng so be sure not to stand in the wrong line. The cafe inside is very small and crowded whether you go for breakfast or lunchtime. The space is very limited and if you consider yourself taller than the average person in Hong Kong, be very careful when moving through to sit or stand as there are various ceiling heights in the old building. Service is alright and efficient as most HK cha chaan tengs are expected to be however, I didn't like the attitude of one of the servers who brought out my table's meal as it was not what was ordered. She questioned our order and it was very clear that no one in my group ordered it, yet she insisted that we did. After a bit of back and forth, she decided to swap out the meal for the one we actually ordered. The food was A-OK, nothing particularly spectacular. The toasted and buttered bun was decent but didn't have enough butter not toasty char. The macaroni noodle soup was on the bland side. The hot dog and eggs were very typical. After exiting the MTR and making a right, you'll see the small Gong Cha storefront. There are signs plastered all over the windows that advertise their top bestselling drinks, but everybody seemed to be ordering a regular boba milk tea, so I followed their lead. Yep, the best boba milk tea I've had during my trip to Asia. Comparing to Coco's in Taiwan, Gong Cha's milk tea was stronger and more flavorful, coming very close to Half and Half's boba milk tea back in the States. I feel like all the tea drinks I've had in Asia (with the exception of China) were smooth, and this was no exception. Milk tea was smooth and flavorful, boba was cooked perfectly and retained the chewy quality. Only minor complaint is that they don't have mini pearls. And of course you're able to adjust the sugar and ice levels. I almost always ask for less ice. Overall, a solid tea place. Super handy if you're on the way to the outlets and want to get something to drink. There are definitely busy times - when school ends, when there's a rush of customers who just got off the MTR, etc. - but the workers are pretty fast and you'll get your drink within a few minutes.

After dinner, Yee Shun is packed. From the window, there are trays of white bowls filled with milk puddings of different flavors. They seated me at a table with a young couple. There's a frosted glass partition on the table. While our knees are almost touching, we can't see each other. Double Skin Milk is a pudding with a smooth, creamy, and custardy texture. You can have it either cold or hot depending on your mood. The best part is the thick chewy skin that has formed on the top of the pudding. There's something extremely satisfying about carving little slices off the pudding with your spoon.
