We were cravings for some traditional congee and steamed rice rolls, so my uncle (a local in the area) recommended this local congee shop, 新深粥店 aka Sun Sum Congee, in Wan Chai. It is walkable from our hotel, and it is very close to the Wai Chai MTR station, on Hennessey Road.
You can sit anywhere in the restaurant; it is a little on the run-down side, stools are mostly ripped lol. The menu is in pure Chinese, and you place an order by YELLING out the order from your table lol. Then this lady will SHOUT your order, in shop talk, to the kitchen! You pay when you leave with the handwritten receipt given to you at your table.
The congee menu is very extensive because of the different combination of toppings. We ordered the century old egg with minced beef congee. I love those 2 toppings a lot, so why not put them together hehe... the minced beef normally comes RAW, so make sure you mix it to 'cook' it before you eat your congee!
You will also find steamed rice rolls, turnip cake, cold soy milk drink, and many more Hong Kong staples in the shop. read more
