As my friend and I don't eat pork liver, we just opted for the regular beef noodles. It came out nice and piping hot - a definite good sign. The broth was tasty with the cooked beef, perfect for the winter cold. But I wasn't a big fan of the instant ramen noodles used, although typical of a local cha chaan teng. We also ordered the kaya toast which was absolutely delicious! It's essentially fried thick French toast with kaya (coconut jam) slathered in between. The woman sitting across from us (note: you WILL have to share tables), ordered her own after seeing ours, and had hers topped with condensed milk! People in HK like their food sweet, haha! It's not specifically mentioned on the menu but if you order cold, it'll come sweetened and hot is unsweetened. Overall, the meal was just alright. The beef and egg sandwiches didn't have much of a flavor and I thought the ground beef was a little dry. The french toast, however, was excellent. Moist, slightly crunchy on the outside, and stuffed with some peanut butter. I'd come back to try something else on the menu but I wouldn't really recommend the sandwiches.

I decided to go with the Tender Pork Poached Cheese Noodle. It's a simple dish - a rich cheese sauce is poured atop noodles and pork - but it's so, so good. The noodles admittedly aren't anything special - they could be instant noodles for all I know - but good lord that cheese sauce! It's so rich and creamy, and the cheesiness really comes through. It's among the best cheese sauces I've ever had. And the pork is surprisingly delicious, as well. It's cooked perfectly and boasts a very tasty yet not too distracting sauce. Perfect. I wish there was something like this in Toronto, although if there were I'm sure I'd wind up eating it way too often.

It tastes exactly how it looks: messy, stringy, and super cheesy. It might be an acquired taste for some, but cheese lovers might find solace in this immediately. Go next level and get a side of meat with it, specifically the pork neck. It is charred wonderfully, juicy and complements the sauce perfectly. The spam wannabe (lunch meat) also works, but the pork neck is seriously worth the hype. Without the cheese noodles, Sun Kee is just another HK Style Cafe. Ying Kee has been operating for more than 40 years with its pork soup and deep fried pork belly as its signature dishes. I was excited to try it out despite looking at the photos originally and not truly interested in the thick-cut noodles (I prefer thin noodles). We walked in at 1:30 p.m. on a Friday. Right as we walked in to choose a table, the owner asked us what size of noodle we wanted. We replied we'd take a look first. The owner said there were only two size bowls -- small or large -- and proceeded to show us the actual bowls. We chose the small size. She asked if we wanted chicken wings or vegetables, and I said yes to the wings and chose "yau mac choi" (油麥菜) for the vegetables. This was a typical and very traditional dai pai dong style of eatery where there were fold-up stools at each table with all the self-serve utensils and condiments on the table. The bowl of pig lard noodles arrived almost instantly. It was filled with long thick noodles, lean and fat prices of pork belly, and diced Chinese mushrooms in the pork soup. There were green onions and preserved veggies scattered on top. I took one sip of the soup, and it was wonderfully umami and delicious. The thick noodles were very tender and smooth, completely unlike other thick starchy noodles I've had before. It wasn't greasy or fatty despite being fried in pig lard. It was really tasty and unique. No wonder this place was so popular! The fatty pieces of pork were tasty too. I finished all of the pork soup too. The plate of four chicken wings arrived, and it was so home-style. It was delicious! It was fresh, slightly seasoned, and perfect. The Indian lettuce (油麥菜) was also great and fresh. It was delicious as well. During our visit, I saw so many people come in for a bowl of the pig lard noodles. Some were locals, coming in and asking right away for a large or small bowl with customization requests of "small bowl, more lean pork, less mushrooms" or "large bowl, more mushrooms, less soup", etc. A few were newbies like us where the owner waved the size of the bowl to them in the air. It was very fast, effective, and no-nonsense service. Having only three main items on the menu made for such a simple ordering process too (noodles -- large or small size, chicken wings -- two or four, and vegetables -- a few kinds). Expect a wait during most mornings and afternoons, as folks are here to enjoy their unpretentious food. Most folks are here for their tomato soup, but specifically the tomato macaroni with beef (蕃茄鮮牛肉通粉) and their crispy buttered up buns (奶油脆脆). Often times I like to switch their classic dish up with instant noodle (蕃茄牛肉麵) and the crispy lemon honey buns (檸蜜脆脆). Together they go hand-in-hand with a milk tea or lemon tea for a complete meal. If tomato is not your thing, than skip this place. Even as an authentic DPD / Hong Kong cafe, they lack a lot of variety. For the non-tomato folks, they have breakfast items like ham, eggs, luncheon meat, and corned beef for around $30HKD. It's not a bad option, but it's not worth waiting in line for just that alone. Even though the staff is not the most well versed in English, there are plenty of expats here who have made it work. Their menu is in both Chinese and English and the seating is extremely tight, outdoor (#1) only, and not conducive to groups. While the lines are fierce in the morning, they are usually moving quickly since many folks are doing takeout. At most, it's 30-35 folks at a time. Even though they are technically in Central, the best way to get here is to get off at the Sheung Wan MTR station and walk directly from the A2 exit.
