Ying Kee Noodle (英記油渣麵) features pig lard noodles…read more Apparently, lard noodle originated from the 60s and 70s as a traditional Hong Kong food. Ying Kee has been operating for more than 40 years with its pork soup and deep fried pork belly as its signature dishes. I was excited to try it out despite looking at the photos originally and not truly interested in the thick-cut noodles (I prefer thin noodles). We walked in at 1:30 p.m. on a Friday. Right as we walked in to choose a table, the owner asked us what size of noodle we wanted. We replied we'd take a look first. The owner said there were only two size bowls -- small or large -- and proceeded to show us the actual bowls. We chose the small size. She asked if we wanted chicken wings or vegetables, and I said yes to the wings and chose "yau mac choi" (油麥菜) for the vegetables. This was a typical and very traditional dai pai dong style of eatery where there were fold-up stools at each table with all the self-serve utensils and condiments on the table. The bowl of pig lard noodles arrived almost instantly. It was filled with long thick noodles, lean and fat prices of pork belly, and diced Chinese mushrooms in the pork soup. There were green onions and preserved veggies scattered on top. I took one sip of the soup, and it was wonderfully umami and delicious. The thick noodles were very tender and smooth, completely unlike other thick starchy noodles I've had before. It wasn't greasy or fatty despite being fried in pig lard. It was really tasty and unique. No wonder this place was so popular! The fatty pieces of pork were tasty too. I finished all of the pork soup too. The plate of four chicken wings arrived, and it was so home-style. It was delicious! It was fresh, slightly seasoned, and perfect. The Indian lettuce (油麥菜) was also great and fresh. It was delicious as well. During our visit, I saw so many people come in for a bowl of the pig lard noodles. Some were locals, coming in and asking right away for a large or small bowl with customization requests of "small bowl, more lean pork, less mushrooms" or "large bowl, more mushrooms, less soup", etc. A few were newbies like us where the owner waved the size of the bowl to them in the air. It was very fast, effective, and no-nonsense service. Having only three main items on the menu made for such a simple ordering process too (noodles -- large or small size, chicken wings -- two or four, and vegetables -- a few kinds). I really liked this place and would recommend it to tourists and locals.

The breakfast sets were so so SO disappointing. First of all, the breakfast menu is very limited compared to other HK style cafes. They offer mainly noodle dishes and no Western-style items like oatmeal, sandwiches, etc. The breakfast sets do come with thick toast & fried eggs... but the toast was the most disappointing of all!! It was rather flavorless and not toasty :( They do have several large tables, so it's good for bigger parties. The food also comes out in record time, and the service is actually okay (for HK-cafe standards). However, I'm not a fan of the actual restaurant food and would recommend just sticking with the baked pastries :)

We came in right before closing, around 9:30pm. There was plenty of seating still available. They told us they were out of lamb, but it's ok as I wanted beef. I'll come back for the lamb next time. The guys ordered the Tibetan-style dry beef noodles in garlic sauce (HK$42) and I opted for the beef noodle soup (HK$38). The food was served very promptly, within 5 mins of placing the order! And my my, was my noodle soup piping hot!! Mhmmm super warm and hearty, with a generous serving of coriander. WINNING. THAT BROTH THOUGH, HOLY COW. Very very flavorful. It reminds of the soup at the end of hot pot when everything's been cooked in it. Just like that. Full of beef flavor. I loveeeee. For the dry noodles with garlic sauce, it reminds me of tsukemen, where the broth came on the side. It's the same broth used for the noodle soup but a tad saltier. I saw the chili pepper next to this item on the menu so was hesitant about ordering it. But I tried a bit of my friend's and it wasn't too spicy at all! I'll definitely return for it! (And will need to return for the other skewers and cumin fried chicken wings!!) How much did we spend among four people? HK$205. What a STEAL! Around HK$50 per person. It doesn't get any better than that. Plus serving size is much bigger than that of Kau Kee, and for the same price, you're better off coming to Qinghai Tibetan Noodles. NOM AWAY!

Too bad what is happening there now but when one of my friends who have been there told me he has found a place that reminds him of his trip to Tibet, I have to give it a try. I have never tried Tibetan food before so honestly I did not have any expectations whatsoever, I went with a open heart and let it surprise me. The place is really small with only a few tables (outdoor seating as well if you do not mind the heat). There is nothing fancy about the décor here but I have seen quite a lot of happy customers here so I think my friend has recommended a rather nice place. Since he has been to Tibet and (supposedly) knows more about its food, I just let me order. He ordered signature noodles with muttons and beef for me. After a while the food was served. One of the staff came to us (maybe I did look like I was not in my element) and told us before we ate, we should smell it first. And we did. I could not really describe that but it was rather special, in a good way. The staff told us that for Tibetan food, it is very common to use something called "Ground Cumin" that has a very distinct aroma to it. And then I had a bite of the mutton, which was not so chewy and it went so well with the soup. I enjoyed my very first Tibetan food very much and since I do not know when I can finally go to Tibet, I guess I will come here again.

Sadly, the number of dai pai dong has declined over the years as licenses for them are no longer issued, but Sing Heung Yuen is one of the few remaining ones. I came to Sing Heung Yuen for lunch with my friend. There was a line, but it moved relatively quickly. I ordered a Hong Kong-style milk tea and a tomato noodle soup with sausage, luncheon meat, and egg. I was told by a few people that the soup is best with macaroni noodle, but I prefer instant noodle, so I got that instead. The food hit the spot. It was simple, delicious, and super filling. I was told by some local ladies that the toast is a must-try, but I was way too full, so I skipped it. Aside from being a unique experience, Sing Heung Yuen offers a quick and affordable meal to tourists and locals. Avoid though if you are not a fan of tomato soup or toast since the menu is as limited as the space.

They are known for their tomato soup base and you can choose the type of noodles and there's various toppings to choose from. I ordered their tomato macaroni soup with beef and spam. The soup is on the sour side and I would have liked it to be a little more savory and hearty. The macaroni was a little overcooked but that's basically Hong Kong cafe style. It came with 2 half pieces of spam, one of it was overcooked and dry, the other one seemed undercooked. The beef was decent texture wise but it didn't have much flavor. We also ordered their toast with condensed milk and the toast was over toasted and too crunchy to my liking. Overall, it's an unique experience but don't be expect the food to be superb. You also won't get over the top service but everyone was very courteous and friendly.

That is another classic dish consisting of green bell pepper, eggplant and tofu, each stuffed with a generous amount of fish paste. It's a difficult dish to get right. If not floured well the fish paste will not stick to the vegetables, and the veggies can get overly soggy due to the deep frying. But not here! They are generous with the amount of fish paste, and the vegetables were fried to decent crispiness.
