Kam Wah Cafe is also famous for their freshly baked Pineapple Bun and Butter. Can't start your day without some HK Milk Tea and Iced Ovaltine. My son said it's a good thing the nai cha in the states are not as good because he was starting to develop an addiction. Lol. For those of you who don't know, it's made with Ceylon leaves, evaporated milk and sweetened condensed milk. The French toast was so damn delicious but a bit indulgent. I do wish I could taste more of the peanuts. My son loved his bolo bao. We also shared a hot bowl of macaroni soup with Spam and lettuce. Thinking back, I regret not trying the Spicy Satay Beef Instant Noodle. I will have to look for this back in the states. The aunties working here are just the most adorable, very kind and welcoming. One of them took the time to help us navigate the huge menu and recommended a few items. I would come back again and again if I could. I have a mad love for these iconic HK Style Cafes aka Cha Chaan Tengs. These affordable quick-paced restaurants were influenced by the city's 150 years of British rule. Aside from the classic breakfast items, they also offer many delicious rice and noodle dishes in the afternoon.

The food just hit the spot for me, bringing me right back to my childhood memories of eating this on weekend mornings at our local HK cafe. Their popularity was at an all-time high just before the pandemic and has remained one of Sai Wan's most frequent local eateries. To no one's surprise, the seating and layout are not group friendly and it can be very cramped. Sharing tables is a big possibility, and I'd come here with no more than 3-4 folks. Waiting is a common past time here, so try to aim for a pre-noon arrival. Their stuffed toasts are legendary and are indeed the real deal. The salted egg yolk toast is fun to eat and film, but the taro custard (香芋流沙西多士) is next level good. The lava that flows from within makes this the ultimate dessert item, and should be on everyone's table. Their XO stir fried radish cubes (XO醬炒蘿蔔糕), along with the XO fried rice rolls (XO醬炒腸粉) are two of my favorite items. The dim sum items are fairly standard (especially the shrimp dumplings), but the shrimp stuffed rice rolls are very good. The shrimp toast is not my usual kind of order, but this place definitely specializes in it. The service is warm and very quick with everything: taking orders, bringing food, and getting the check. Prices are not back breaking but it's a little more expensive than other comparable places. Cash is king.

The owners aren't outright friendly, but are certainly warmer than your average cha chaan teng waiter in Hong Kong. The sesame shrimp toast is more delicious than it has any right to be - crisp exterior studded with toasted white sesame, these triangles give way to plump shrimp meat in the middle, and a cute little dish of Kewpie mayonnaise on the side. The signature egg yolk is fun to cut into - giving you some real insta-worthy yolk porn, but is definitely heavy, so consider sharing. But for me, what won my heart was a delicious take on a childhood favorite - radish cakes: Chau Kee's versions are cut up and fried, so that the crisp fry-exterior gives way to a tacky and soft interior. Flavors of shrimp and seafood are present from the XO sauce. The menu is in both Chinese and English and full of pictures, so it's also gweilo-friendly!

I'm down if it's good food! Located in a residential area, I wasn't really expecting too much honestly. But I heard good word about it so why not give it a shot? Wow, for a neighborhood restaurant, this place was bomb! I had some dishes where I never had elsewhere before! We started with the fried pomfret salad. I love the fried fish, juicy, tender and mildly sweet. I wasn't a fan of the salad dressing though. It was like the thousand island from a bottle from the grocery aisle. I wish they make a good dressing. My favorite plate-licking dish was the shrimp angel hair with pumpkin sauce. Pumpkin sauce!? Large, succulent and crunchy shrimp with fresh shredded veggies mixed in sweet and buttery pumpkin sauce. How can you not like that? The flavors were really good and I was going bite after bite until I finished it without even knowing! My second fav was the crispy chicken with apricots and honey mustard sauce served on on a plate of spaghetti and veggies. Honey mustard is my favorite, and to combine that with crispy chicken? What a great idea! The chicken came out crispy and hot and the meat was tender and juicy. Love this dish! We wrapped up our meal with the famous chocolate souffle. Dang! That was good! Piping hot, creamy, sweet, slightly crispy on the outside and fluffy inside like a snowball! We got the vanilla flavor too but I liked the chocolate one better. The lady owner was there last night and she was bubbly and socializing with all the customers. Friendly and good service overall. Seating was a bit tight so make sure you make a reservation ahead of time or come early. Not only Asians come here, I saw a couple of westerners too enjoying not so authentic but delicious western food!

In the states, I tend to think of it as crazy baked spaghetti or baked rice with a porkchop or steak plopped otop. In the same way, Amy's Kitchen delivers. On their menu you will find some of their signature dishes like roast chicken stuffed with apricot over pasta and a mustard cream sauce, or a piece of pan seared foie gras over squid ink pasta. The food is a bit pricier than other local more traditional restaurants, but Amy's has something none of the others have. Amy's trump card comes in the form of a desert: their eggy, delicious souffles. Warning: Each of these serve two people, go solo on this desert at your own risk.

They are cash only so make sure you have cash if you decide to come. Come early in the morning to avoid crowds, thanks to jetlag getting here at 7:30 was easy and I walked right in. Like many small place in HK expect to share a table if it is packed. Milk Tea: Very simple and traditional, don't expect michelin level taste. It's so good in hot and humid weather. It's brewed right up front using pantyhose as a strainer. Spring onion chicken over dry ramen noodles: The dish they are most known for. This was SO good after a night of drinking and mean whisky breath. The instant noodles are perfectly low-key and great for absorbing all the alcohol. Chicken was delicious and all of it is "activated" by pouring burning oil on the green onions and chicken. Pork Chop Bun: The noodles were enough for me but I really wanted to try this. Tender pork with tomato and mayo in a bun, simple street food that I loved!

Located in the heart of Central, it's a convenient place to stop by if you're going to make the trek up or down Mid-Levels. The location is on a very narrow street where both pedestrians and vehicles are allowed, so be cautious. There is a sign indicating dine-in or carryout at the entrance of the cha chaan teng so be sure not to stand in the wrong line. The cafe inside is very small and crowded whether you go for breakfast or lunchtime. The space is very limited and if you consider yourself taller than the average person in Hong Kong, be very careful when moving through to sit or stand as there are various ceiling heights in the old building. Service is alright and efficient as most HK cha chaan tengs are expected to be however, I didn't like the attitude of one of the servers who brought out my table's meal as it was not what was ordered. She questioned our order and it was very clear that no one in my group ordered it, yet she insisted that we did. After a bit of back and forth, she decided to swap out the meal for the one we actually ordered. The food was A-OK, nothing particularly spectacular. The toasted and buttered bun was decent but didn't have enough butter not toasty char. The macaroni noodle soup was on the bland side. The hot dog and eggs were very typical. The best thing we had were the milk teas. Prices are very normal for Central but would be considered overpriced in other areas of HK. I'm not planning to make a return unless someone requests it specifically or if I only want to grab a milk tea to-go.

Happened to be in wan chai today so why not- We got take out for two buns- one with butter and one without. But even before opening the package we knew something was wrong. Each bun was wrapped in plastic, but was so extremely heavy. How could a bun be so heavy? Opening it and taking a bite - it's like chewy raw dough. I'm not sure if it was really raw, but that's what it felt like. I couldn't finish it. I didn't even want to take a second bite, really. I'm actually very surprised at the good reviews on the bun here. Its one of the few times that Google reviews are more fair and accurate than Yelp reviews for me. Don't trust the lists!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't get this bun!!!!

Perhaps it's just not for my kind of tastebud... my younger son liked his macaroni in soup. My older one did not like his "bor lor yao"... which is the pineapple bun with a thick piece of butter... all the baos were very dense... and not fluffy like other ones we've tried. The only saving grace - the Chicken Pie! It's crusty and flavorful. Anyway, small shop, a few tables and you will be sharing with strangers if you're solo. They do pour the left over soups into a bucket right underneath your seats... so not quite sanitary... but you'll live. Bring lots of wet naps. Cash Only.
