Look, everywhere in Hong Kong is crowded. No one has access to BBQ very readily, so these BBQ areas are very popular. Except that, they are also very crowded.
The good and easy thing about these places is that all you need to do is to show up. They sell everything including food, utensils and drinks. You don't have to haul anything here, or do any prep at all. Except for the fact that Hong Kong-style BBQ is more do it yourself (think long prongs over fire, like a boy scout would do), there is almost no work involved.
On the other hand, I actually prefer to not just stare at people, their kids and their dogs when I'm by a beach. Again, Hong Kong is very crowded, but there are BBQ areas that are a bit less accessible and a lot more scenic out in the country parks. As long as you are willing to go out of your way for a little bit, and haul your foodstuff in, you will be rewarded. Those trips are my fondest memories growing up and this isn't remotely a fair representation of that.
