    Part of the Vegetarian menu

Curious and hungry, we have decided to check out the upscale Chinese restaurant, Madame Fu Grand Cafe Chinois, on the 3rd Floor of Barrack 3 in Tai Kwun 大館 - a Hong Kong landmark and historical site in Central, Hong Kong, that used to be a prison back in the days! It is absolutely gorgeous inside Madame Fu, with beautiful French-inspired colonial decors. This place is very instagrammable! The tablewear is of high quality, especially the teacup, it is so light and pretty! There are also seatings along the patio overlooking the Parade Grounds in Tai Kwun as well. Service was miraculous, and servers spoke English (yay!) It feels as though I was dining at a high-end French restaurant! I do feel out of place in my sneakers! The menu is very extensive, with many dim sum options, and traditional Chinese dishes with meat, seafood, veggies, and desserts. Vegetarian and gluten-free menus are also available. We shared a bunch of dim sums, which had some flavourful twists. The dim sums were presented very nicely. Unfortunately, they were hit and miss for me. Pros: The steamed Seafood and Black Truffle Dumplings were really good. I also enjoyed the steaming hot Siu Mai with Crab Roe. Cons: The Rice Rolls with Barbecue Pork we had was served cold? One dish (not to be mentioned) had a mishap where we had to ask the server to send it back to the kitchen. For the higher end prices, I do have higher expectations. Overall, 3.5 stars. But I definitely must give credit to the great service and the lavishly beautiful atmosphere... Hence, 4 stars. Hope Madame Fu Grand Cafe Chinois will improve on the consistent food quality, and aim to deliver an overall 5-star experience. Keep up the good work.

First time ever having dim sum, it was so good! They cater to gluten intolerances, though it requires a reservation because they take cross contamination seriously. Got every type of dim sum and the drab fried rice. A flavorful feast!

This place is gorgeous, and hearkens back to the old Hong Kong Colonial era. It's on the 3rd floor of Barrack 3, which used to house the old prison. After a long schlep up those Stairolators, or whatever they're called, up to the Mid-level, we were craving a snack. Bustling with Christmas activity, the outside, overlooking the parade grounds, was fully reserved. But sitting inside the refined bar area was homey, and is magnificently decorated with heavy drapes and lots of dark wood. While we didn't have lunch, the few dim sum dishes we ordered - buns, spring rolls, and egg rolls, were excellent, and service was elegant. It was a taste of luxury on a chilly day!

Tai Kwun is the go to boujee destination in Central where you go to feel like you're better than everybody. Madame Fu's is the cherry on top, located on the 3/F with an appalling lack of electric fans for customers seated outdoors. Thankfully I was indoors and enjoyed their special brunch offering with DiningCity for a buy-one get one free special. For those of you whose IQs are below 100 like myself, that doesn't mean you get an additional portion of everything you order - it just means that you only pay for half of your dishes. Learned that the hard way Overall the food was fine, the crowd was all old people or new parents with the occasional degenerate (some folks cracked open two bottles of champagne in front of a baby!), and the palm tree decor indoors was pretty cool. Point taken off because the food was solid but didn't blow my mind

Pleasantly surprised with @madamefugrandcafe . It was FREE FLOW Peking duck brunch! We were expecting more quantity than quality but the quality of almost every dish was AMAZING, making the value at this restaurant STUNNING. The Peking duck was pretty damn good for all you can eat. The fried tofu was absolutely perfectly cooked. Crispy on the outside and almost silt smooth on the inside. Highly recommend the brunch here. Good vibes!

If you want fancy Cantonese in a colonial French setting, this could be the place - 5 star. On the 3rd floor of Barrack 3 over looking the Parade Grounds in Tai Kwun, the setting is wonderful sitting outside. Inside, it's lavishly decorated in a colonial Chinese / French way. The food is largely Cantonese & a little Shanghainese at a reasonably good - 4 star - quality. Please is a little pricy - $$$ - but I think it's worth it. Good for a date.

Fuk Loi Kui? F that. It's not what you think it is…read more It's the Cantonese pronounciation of the restaurant 福來居, but to make it more confusing it has another name embedded in as 福來居(牛記)海鮮飯店 (Ngau Kee) Seafood Restaurant. There's something about this place that gives me a "je ne sais quoi" kind of vibe. And that is, there is some intangible quantity and quality, that really makes this place totally awesome, provided you have the right minded set of dining companions with you, who share a love of great no nonsense local food. If you want killer stir fry in the hood kind of eats, with a decent seafood selection that is not entirely off the wall expensive, yet full of local flavor, FLK is a very sound choice. It is within very easy walking distance from Prince Edward MTR station, and is very near the roasties shop famous for roast crispy skin pig (still using charcoal) 永合隆飯店 Wing Hap Lung Restaurant. Started off with a bottle of ice cold Tsing Tao. I forgot how large the bottles in Hong Kong are. The Tsing Tao's in the states at Chinese restaurants are generally dwarf size bottles in comparison. So if you have 4 or more in your party, one bottle is good to start. They chill the glasses, a little extra attention to detail to make your "Cantonese izakaya" experience better. Too many good things on the menu, FLK has this dai pai dong esque vibe, and while it is indoors, the atmosphere and food is close enough that you can have an awesome time in here. 豉油王煎中蝦 - soy sauce supreme (Maggi) pan fried medium prawns. Incredible umami and flavor, but where are the heads?? Even the shells can be eaten! 薑蔥桶蠔 - ginger scallion stir fried oysters. A touch oily, but these are to be expected. Really awesome otherwise! Oysters are either from Canada or United States. 清蒸瓜子斑 - steamed melonseed grouper (wild fish). We arrived close to 8 pm, and by then the seafood selection from the styrofoam tanks were dwindling. At most maybe 3 to 4 kinds of live fish, and this melonseed grouper 瓜子斑 is certainly not a cheap specimen....but cheaper than having a kinki shioyaki at a local Japanese eatery! An extremely solid choice, well executed. The flesh came off the bones with ease. This is why when you travel to HK, eating fresh seafood is a must. It's a far cry from the farmed American fish at Cantonese restaurants in the USA. 上湯蒜子大豆苗 - large pea sprout with garlic in superior broth. Really hard to go wrong with this prep. Stir frying uses more oil, so this approach is healthier. 豉油王炒麵 - soy sauce supreme stir fried noodles. Haha back to stir frying because we want to equalize the guilt! When having seafood like this, ending the meal with a killer plate of carbs is a must, and soy sauce supreme noodles 豉油王炒麵 is a solid choice. It is also perhaps the de facto method of testing wok hay (the other tester dish is beef chow fun, but we're at a seafood restaurant). This rendition is very solid and intense. It's a touch on the dry side which is what I prefer. Oh, I believe they stock Yu Kwen Yick chili sauce, so you can ask for a little bit to make the noodle experience jump a few notches. Fruit platter for dessert (included in the meal), which was an extremely nice touch. Watermelon, pineapple, and papaya. Refreshing even on a mildly chilly January evening. Great food that soothes and satisfies. Even recommended by local celebrity Chef Leung of Hoi King Heen on his FB page!

Came here for brunch as it was near our hotel…read more We came 15 mins after opening and were seated quickly. They gave us a booklet along with the paper to fill out, and most of the dim sum was the classic dim sum that I'm accustomed to. Their chiu chou fun gor was alright for me. They did put a good amount of peanuts in here but the exterior was a bit heavier on the dough side. Their siu mai and har gow were pretty good. Their cheung fun wasn't the silky light type, so I was just alright with it. Their Chicken with Sticky Rice wraped in Lotus Leaf was huge though, way bigger than those in Los Angeles. Their fresh mango custard roll was my highlight though, as they had chunks of mango in the middle and it was sweet. Would try this again. I think the one other aspect of this place is the interior is really clean, and they have a decent amount of tables inside. Service is a bit more attentive as the area isn't as large. I was most certainly full upon completion of this meal though haha.

That wok hei (the breath of the wok) is what makes each of these dishes stand out. I was so impressed with how fast the food came to the table. Here is what we ordered based on what seems to be their most popular: - Typhoon Shelter Shrimp (get this) - Beef & Potatoes (my fave) - Razor Clams in black bean (my son's fave) - Ong Choy with Shrimp Paste (Amazing) It's not just beef and potatoes, it's smoky, slightly charred, uniquely flavored. And the Typhoon Shelter Shrimps were so meaty and insanely delicious with all the garlic bits. Very packed even for a Monday evening but there are plenty of seating at different sections of the entire place. There is A/C. I see lots of people ordering beer as well. First time ever seeing this type of dish. Very unique. Came out very hot. The typhoon shelter seasoning did not coat each eggplant. It was more like the eggplant sat on top of the seasoning. This dish came way too late. We were already almost finished our beef. We chased the servers twice and both times neither went to go check. They just said it's coming soon. They've lost the charm of a dai pai dong after they got famous. They have way too many servers that stand around and not look out for customers who waive them down. They charge you for bringing outside food/drinks. Apparently they were celebrating their 79th anniversary and handed out phoenix rolls. However, not everyone got one. You only get one if you ask..
